Cuddly Critters II Quilt Free Project Instructions Helpful Notions: Prewound bobbins (PB24W) Clear Monofilament Thread (97601001) Matching all-purpose thread Helpful Tips: Create 15 patchwork blocks following the modified cutting instructions below. Assemble the blocks following the instructions for the Four-Fabric 9-Patch in the Quilt with Confidence book, p. 31. Cut fabrics for borders and binding. - Fabric A: Cut four 3½" squares (cornerstones). - Fabric B: Cut four 1¼" wide crosswise strips (inner borders). - Main block and border fabric: Cut four 3½" wide crosswise strips (outer borders). Cut fabric for patchwork blocks. - Fabric A: Cut four 2½" wide crosswise strips. - Fabric B: Cut one 2½" wide crosswise strip. - Fabric C: Cut two 2½" wide crosswise strips. - Fabric D: Cut two 2½" wide crosswise strips. Cut fabric for main blocks: From main block and border fabric, cut fifteen 8" blocks. Stabilize block and border fabrics with spray starch or a starch alternative such as Perfect Sew Spray or Best Press Starch Alter- ative. - For embroidered blocks use Cut-Away Iron On No Show Mesh stabilizer. Stabilize the wrong side of the fabric square. - As a general rule, remove excess stabilizer as you go, following stabilizer instructions. Prepare and join embroidered blocks and patchwork blocks to form a quilt top five blocks across and six rows down as shown, alternating block type and starting with a patchwork block. Add Fabric B inner borders. Add 3½" wide outer borders. - Side borders: Subcut two strips to equal the length of the assembled quilt top. Stabilize as noted below and embroider. - Upper and lower borders: Cut two strips to equal the width of the assembled quilt top. Stabilize as noted below and embroider. - Use Cut-Away Iron On No Show Mesh Stabilizer in conjunction with a self-adhesive stabilizer. First stabilize the wrong side of the fabric areas to be embroidered with Cut-Away Iron On No Show Mesh. Next, use a self-adhesive stabilizer rather than hooping the fabric. Simply hoop the stabilizer and adhere the fabric to the sticky area of the stabilizer. Economize by using stabilizer on a roll. Instead of cutting the stabilizer to the size of the hoop, keep the stabilizer on the roll when you hoop. After embroidering the first section, carefully tear away the fabric from the stabilizer. Give the stabilizer a quick press to smooth out the wrinkles from the first hooping. Then rehoop the next section of stabilizer and continue embroidering. - For outer border embroideries, work from left to right, stitching each design in sequence. All design components are pictured on the following pages. Each grouping indicates the order in which the various designs mak- ing up that grouping should be stitched. Join the outer borders to the inner borders of the quilt top. - Attach side borders first. - Attach cornerstones to opposite ends of upper and lower borders; attach borders to quilt. Layer, quilt, and bind as desired.
