WELCOME TO WORSHIP AND HOLY WEEK AT ST. PAUL’S!

Palm Sunday gets its name from the palm branches that people spread on the path and waved in the air for Jesus as he

entered Jerusalem. As the King, he would gain a victory they didn’t expect – over our enemies of sin and death with his

own death.

CALL TO WORSHIP

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear friends in Christ, during these 6 weeks of Lent we have prepared for this week of wonder.

Today, Palm Sunday, we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week. Christ

entered in triumph into his own city, to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die and to rise

again. Let us remember with devotion his entry that concluded at the empty tomb and follow him with

a living and active faith.

M: This is the day the crowds shouted:

C: Hosanna in the highest!

M: This is that day the crowds waved their palm branches:

C: And gave Jesus a royal reception!

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: As we raise our palm branches of praise and shout our hosannas, we also celebrate Jesus’ triumphant

entry into our hearts. He comes to free us from the guilt of sin, the grip of death and the grasp of

Satan. We bow our heads and from the heart humbly confess:

C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and repentant sinner,

confess that I have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions.

I have not loved you with my whole heart.

I have not loved others as I should.

I am distressed by the sins that trouble me and am deeply sorry for them.

M: As Jesus rode into Jerusalem he was hailed as a King and Deliverer. He has delivered us. He has

rescued us from the eternal punishment we deserve. Because of Jesus’ finished work - His perfect life

on the earth, and His innocent death on the cross - I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: As loyal subjects, we raise our voices in thankful song:

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son,

Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their coats in his path and waved their palm

branches, so may we always hail him as our King. And when he comes again

C: may he find us ready to meet him with a trusting heart; through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST LESSON – Zechariah 9:9-10

Who is he? The King most lowly or the King of kings most holy? The King who saves!

9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous

and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots

from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim

peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

SECOND LESSON – Philippians 2:5-11

Even though Jesus was God, he became a man. He wasn’t on his way to a throne in Jerusalem.

He was on his way to a hill outside of Jerusalem where he would fulfill God’s mission and save people.

5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very

nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he

made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being

found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a

cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and

every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

PALM SUNDAY GOSPEL / TODAY’S MESSAGE – Mark 11:1-11

M: The Gospel according to Mark, chapter 11:

C: Glory be to you O Lord!

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent

two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find

a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are

you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’” 4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5 some people

standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them

to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he

sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the

fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” 10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of

our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since

it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

CONFESSION OF FAITH

M: We confess the Catechism’s meaning to the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed.

C: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and

also true man, born of the virgin Mary is my Lord.

He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me

from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or

silver, but with his holy precious blood and with his innocent suffering and

death.

All this he did that I should be his own, and live under him in his kingdom, and

serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as

he has risen from death and lives and rules eternally.

This is most certainly true.

varsity girls’ soccer at Wisconsin Lutheran High

School. Pastor Butler’s wife, Sara, is today’s

music in our worship.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

M: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! We praise You, Father, that You sent Your Son

not in anger but in mercy. Today, we enter this holy week and together study the mysteries of Your

great salvation in your Son’s suffering, death and resurrection. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: Hear our songs of Hosanna and our prayers.

M: Maintain order in our world. Preserve the Church and the preaching of Your Word against all

enemies. Bless our homes, that parents and children may serve one another faithfully and grow in

knowledge and faith until life’s end. Give health and wisdom to all who serve as Your representatives

in our lives in the home, the church and the government. Lord, in Your mercy,

C: Hear our songs of Hosanna and our prayers.

M: Give Your comfort in every circumstance, that we may declare Your saving works and share Your

saving name with others. Deliver and preserve us, and hear us as we bring you our private petitions.

M: We humbly ask for these things and whatever else You know we need. To You alone we give glory,

honor and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be

done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our

trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and

ever. Amen.

M: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

in Cudahy inviting them to attend (sign-up) or watch

online our Easter Sunrise (6:30 PM) or Easter Festival

(9:30 AM) service. We are reaching out and sharing Jesus,

by inviting our neighbors and community. This is the front

Last summer, God graciously let us keep camp up

and running, and we thank God we had ZERO
