Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) Industry Update 25 January 2019 Agriculture Victoria would like to update industry on the reinstatement of the Victorian Area Freedom program for Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), including the current host material entry requirements. HOST MATERIAL Effective immediately, the entry or importation into Victoria of any CGMMV host material sourced from a property known to be affected by this disease is prohibited unless it meets movement conditions. Host material means any host plant, agricultural machinery, soil and packages used in association with the growing, harvesting and packaging of any CGMMV host plant. Host plant means any plant or plant product, excluding fruit, from the family cucurbitaceae. MOVEMENT CONDITIONS Host materials must: a) in the case of host plants, be grown on the property and be tested and found free of CGMMV within the previous 12 months. b) Used agricultural equipment and packages must be cleaned free of soil and organic matter by: a. steam cleaning; or b. washed with high pressure hot water; c. disinfected with a solution containing more than 100 ppm available chlorine used as a spray rinse or drench treatment. c) Soil is prohibited CUCUMBER GREEN MOTTLE MOSAIC VIRUS (CGMMV) Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) affects cucurbitaceae plant species including watermelon, cucumber, melons, zucchini, pumpkin, squash, bitter melon and bottle gourd. IDENTIFICATION CGMMV can cause severe symptoms including fruit loss, yellowing or dirty red discolouration of the internal area of fruit (Figure 1). It can also appear as mosaic like mottling on leaves, hence the name (Figure 2). PREVENTION Maintain best practise on-farm biosecurity standards. Ensure propagation material is purchased from reputable suppliers and routinely check your cucurbit crops for CGMMV symptoms. Agriculture Victoria would like to update industry on the reinstatement of the Victorian Area Freedom program for Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), including the current host material entry requirements.
