Construction Practice Notes No. 003:
Method for Determination of Compression Strength of Concrete Cube
This construction practice notes are prepared in accordance to MS 26 : Part 2 : 1991
Section 3. Method for Determination of Compression Strength of Concrete Cube
Steps :
1. Testing Machine
Compression testing machine for concrete shallcomply to BS 1610 : Part 1 and clauses 2.4 to 2.9
of Section 2 MS 26 : Part 2 : 1991.
2. Balance (Weighing apparatus)

5. Concrete Cube Dimensions
Measure the cube width x length x height
and confirm the dimensions are within1% of the nominal dimensions. If alldimensions are within 1%, calculate the
volume of the cube from the nominaldimensions (in m
3).
Ideally use a pair of callipers to measure
the dimension across each pair of
opposite faces.
6. Placing the cube in the testing machine
Carefully center the cube on the lower platen.

7. Loading
Setting the recording needle (red colour) to zero.
Without shock, apply and increase the load continuously at a nominal rate within
the range 0.2N/(mm2.s) to 0.4N/(mm
2.s) until no greater load can be sustained.
8. Type of Failure
Satisfactory failures (Abstracted from MS 26 : Part 2 : 1991 Fig 3.1)

8. Type of Failure (cont’d)
Some unsatisfactory failures (Abstracted from MS 26 : Part 2 : 1991 Fig 3.2)
9. Test Report
Recording and calculation
of test results.
Express the results tothe nearest 0.5N/mm2.
