Dear mountain bike friends,

With “bikers heaven”, CUBE has over the past few years created an optimal home base for mountain bikers, one that has become firmly established both at home and abroad.

CUBE is a full-package deal, perfectly attuned to the needs of the MTB community: fantastic mountain sceneries, varied trails and guided tours, coupled with special fea-tures in the CUBE such as multifunctional storage rooms for bikes directly in front of the hotel rooms as well as ramps on which you can take your bike from the lobby directly to your room.

This year, we have once again expanded our offer accordingly. You can find out more on the following pages.

Getting feedback from our guests is especially important. For this reason, we reward constructive criticism and input with a chance to win attractive prizes in our prize contest. Read more about it on page 28.

In this issue of our Bike Mag, we have made it our business to provide you with some exciting information about the CUBE and about mountain biking. We were able to ar-range interviews with and contributing articles from some interesting people in the bike scene and wish you happy reading. Convince yourself of the special features of our hotels and of the wonderful biking grounds. We look forward to welcoming you and already now wish you a wonderful stay in bikers heaven!

A workhorse with the right amount of technical finesseMichael Wild, PR manager for Shimano importer Paul Lange & Co, on Shimano’s new DEORE XT.

Shimano has quite literally left its mark on mountain bikes: DEORE XT was the world’s first MTB component group and in its now 30 years in existence has revo-lutionised cross-country cycling time and again. To celebrate this milestone anni-versary, Shimano completely revamped the XT group set and is now offering a large number of technological innova-tions that were introduced last year in the flagship XTR mountain bike component group without sacrificing any of the fa-mous reliability, durability and broad performance spectrum.

Quite the contrary: like its “bigger sister”, DEORE XT components are made specifi-cally for cross-country and trail use and can be individually configured depending on the type of terrain, riding style or in-tended use. This becomes particularly evident in the wheel sets, which, in the cross-country version, are trimmed for speed with lighter, 19-mm rims, rear wheel quick-release hub and a choice of quick-release hub or 15 mm through-axle system in the front. Stability is the magic word with the trail wheels, thanks to 21-mm rims, 15 mm through-axle hub in the front and a choice of 12 mm through-axle hub or quick-release in the rear.

For the drivetrain, DEORE XT now also uses Shimano’s tried-and-tested Dyna-Sys technology with the option of one tri-ple and two double cranks as well as three 10-speed cassettes (11-32T, 11-34T and 11-36T). The 24-32-42T combi-nation on the triple crank ensures smoother shifting between the large and medium-sized and between the medi-um-sized and small chain rings. This re-quires noticeably less rear shifting to compensate, pedalling frequency and forward motion remain more even, and energy is transmitted more efficiently. Especially the combination with the 36T cassette makes it possible to ride for longer periods on the middle chain ring. The Dyna-Sys drivetrain also reduces en-ergy loss to suspension in bikes with full-suspension wheels and ensures that more energy is available for efficient for-ward motion. For hardcore bikers, in flat terrain or for all-mountain and trail rid-ers, the 40-28T cross-country crank and the 38-26T trail crank are two double cranks that are seamlessly integrated into the Dyna-Sys drivetrain system. A clever detail is that the new DEORE XT shifter features a mode converter which makes switching between 2x10 and 3x10 child’s play.

The new XT disc brakes also offer some truly revolutionary features. The SERVO WAVE stopper represents a quantum leap in terms of braking control and heat management. The compact callipers with oversized 22 mm ceramic pistons work in tandem with the lightweight brake levers for a system that is lighter yet still capable of providing even more

braking performance. The DEORE XT Ice-Tech brake rotors have a triple-layer sandwich structure with an aluminium core embedded between two stainless steel layers. The aluminium’s better heat dissipation helps to reduce the surface temperature of the rotor by about 100 de-grees. Optional Ice-Tech brake pads with aluminium cooling fins can lower the temperature by an additional 50 degrees. The result is high stopping power with al-most no fading. Extensive testing con-ducted on XTR Ice-Tech brakes by the renowned velotech.de test lab proves that Ice-Tech truly represents a revolu-tion in brake performance.

Last but not least, the new DEORE XT group set is setting standards in terms of looks and style. Robust forms and a striking design underscore the XT group’s reputation as a workhorse and technolo-gy highlight. The original MTB group set is available in silver and black.

20 SHIMANO

HIGH STOPPING POWER.

LESS FADING.

In a disc brake system a rise in temperature can significantly affect the consistency. As the temperature of the rotors and the brake pads rises, fading sets in, resulting in a decreased brake performance. Shimano introduced a revolutionary cooling technology for disc brakes named Ice Technologies that offers practically zero brake fading, increases the pad durability up to 100 % and reduces noise substantially. Autrenalin

Hello, Mike. For starters, could you give us a glimpse into bike filmmaking? How big is a film team and how do you film?First of all, it depends on the film project and on the available budget. If the project is a low-budget one, I am usually alone with the rider. For helmet camera rides, I use the biker himself and outfit him with onboard cameras. Or I ride the line my-self after the shoot. Usually I have a second camera with me which I place on a tripod for the counter shot or to film the whole scene. This type of filmmaking may be cheaper, but over-all it is much more time-consuming on the set and, above all, at the cutting table.

What about projects with larger budgets? When shooting a film with a larger budget, the film team consists of five or six people. Here we’ve got two or three cameramen in the team: one for the sound and two assistants to carry the equipment, help in setting up, secure the cameramen (in dif-ficult terrain or while moving on a rope) and to operate the radio.

With such large projects, there’s quite a bit of equipment to carry – how do you deal with that? The equipment transport depends on the location where the shooting takes place. If we’re in a bike park, the transport is done by pickup on forest roads or by ca-ble transport. In open terrain, the only options are usually on foot or by quad. If

there’s no other option and if the re-sources are available, we also use a heli-copter.

How do you decide where to set up the cameras?During the preparations, I ride the tour or the line myself. This way I get a feeling for the route, the terrain and above all for where the biker will be in action. Then we write up a script and position the camer-as accordingly. During the shoot itself, the cameras are set up at pre-deter-mined spots and are re-positioned shot for shot if needed. It is becoming less common for the cameraman to follow the rider on a bike of his own, as the audience has become more demanding in recent years and

22 INTERVIEW AUTRENALIN

Salzburg native Mike Herzog is a passionate mountain biker. And he is just as passionate about filmmaking. The logical consequence: Mike is a passionate bike filmmaker. With his video production company, Autre-nalin, he has made a name for himself in the outdoor scene in recent years for his high-quality sports clips. For our CUBE BIKE MAG, we asked Mike what is most important in film-making and what the average mountain biker should consider when filming his own tour on video. The result was an extensive interview with many interesting tips and insights. So extensive, in fact, that we had to split it up into several smaller articles. This time, we start with some insights into the work of a professional filmmaker. The second part of the interview will appear in the next CUBE BIKE MAG.
