Así, Casa Palopó presenta el cuento

del más enigmático de los lagos: con

algún sabor que sale de la cocina con

notas locales distintivas, con una obra

de arte, con los colores de los textiles

tradicionales contrastados por algún

un tesoro encontrado en un viaje

exótico hecho hace muchos años.

Esto no es una simple decoración, es

el cúmulo de la historia a través de los

años, aquella historia del hotel y de

los huéspedes que han deambulado

por sus pasillos.

Pero esta exuberante propiedad no

debe ser vista como una mera ojeada

de la interrelación de la historia de

Guatemala, si no debe vislumbrarse

of the most enigmatic of lakes: through

a taste from the kitchen with distinctive

local notes, a piece of artwork, the

colors of traditional textiles offset by

a treasure found from an exotic travel

done many years ago. This is not mere

decoration; this is the accumulation

of history over the years, that of the

hotel and that of the guests that have

roamed it’s halls.

But this lush property is not to be

viewed as a glimpse of the intertwining

of Guatemalan history, but with wide

eyes, as to take in every detail and

every corner, it must be viewed with

the eyes of someone searching to build their

own piece of history within these walls. There

is a nostalgia that cloaks every room, from the

elegant sitting room to the spectacular dining

room. This is no ordinary dining room, as far as

romance goes this is it; a veil of candlelight

over white linens with unparalleled views of the

lake Atitlán where beautiful food is prepared.

This view is one shared by every room in the

hotel, although I’m not sure “room” is the right

term for them, as each one has a private

outdoor sitting room so that you may privately

contemplate sunrise or sunset over the blue

waters contoured by the majestic volcanoes.

As you I sat on my private deck and sensed

the mysterious lake’s fog rising all the way

towards the hidden green hill I found the rooms

were filled with the sound of Delibes’ Lakme and

couldn´t help but smile at how suiting it was:

“On the river’s current, On the shining waves,

Where the spring sleeps, And the bird, the bird

sings.”

So whether your story is as complex as Lakme’s

forbidden love or whether it’s a far mundane

one, in this corner of Santa Catarina Palopó

you won’t find lodging, you’ll find a setting to

develop a romantic chapter of your life.

Hay una nostalgia que envuelve todas las

habitaciones, desde la elegante sala de

estar hasta el espectacular comedor. Esto

no es un comedor común, si hablamos de

romance esto es tan bueno como se puede,

un velo de luz de velas que cubre largos

manteles blancos donde se prepara hermosa

comida, todo con vistas incomparables del

lago Atitlán.

Estas vistas son compartidas por todas las

habitaciones del hotel, aunque no estoy

seguro que”habitación” sea el término

correcto, ya que cada una tiene una sala

de estar privada al aire libre para que en

privado puedan contemplar el amanecer

o atardecer sobre las aguas azules

contorneadas por los majestuosos volcanes.

Mientras descansaba en la terraza privada y

sentía la niebla del misterioso lago subiendo

camino hacia la colina verde escondida

encontré que las habitaciones se llenaban

con el sonido de Lakmé de Delibés y no pudo

evitar sonreír ante lo apropiado que era:

“En la corriente del río, en las olas brillantes,

donde duerme la primavera, y el pájaro, el

pájaro canta “.

Así que si su historia es tan compleja como el

amor prohibido de Lakmé, o aun si se trata

de una muy mundana, en este rincón de

Santa Catarina Palopó no van a encontrar

alojamiento, encontrarán un escenario en el

cual desarrollar un romántico capítulo de la

vida.

Did you know that today, to have a drink

of a cup of the delicious Guatemalan

coffee it takes about 650 days? One

may ask, and why so long? This and other

interesting facts you can learn them on

“El Tempisque” Coffee Tour, a private na

reserve located in the fertile lands of

Chiquimullila, and very close to the only

sulfur lagoon in Central America, the

Ixpaco lagoon.

¿Sabías que para tomarse hoy una taza

del delicioso café guatemalteco, se

necesitan alrededor de 650 días? Uno

se podrá preguntar ¿y por qué tanto

tiempo? Esto y otros datos interesantes

los podrán aprender en el tour de

la Finca de Café “El Tempisque” una

reserva natural privada situada en las

tierras fértiles de Chiquimullila, y muy

cerca de la única laguna de azufre en

Centroamérica, la laguna de Ixpaco.

This tour begins in the restaurant

“La República de Café”, located in

Guatemala City, where you will be

greeted by Anaité or Daniel, whom

attend you like at home, and make you

taste the Guatemalan typical breakfast

with a great cup of coffee, which you

can choose based on your preferences

and the characteristic of all Guatemalan

coffee regions, as in “La República de

Café” you can have all kinds of roasted

coffee, ready to drink and enjoy. By the

way, in “La República de Café”, you may

also learn to taste and sample all kinds of

coffee, as there are different courses for

both beginners and expert baristas.

After breakfast, you will be transported

to the coffee plantation on Range Rover

4x4 vehicles, since the access requires

this type of car, and after an hour and a

quarter drive you will reach this beautiful

paradise. You will start walking on a trail

surrounded by all kinds of vegetation and

giant trees, and the bushes of the coffee

plant. Then you will arrive to the coffee

mill, where you receive a brief explanation

of how the coffee beans are processed,

once they have been left to dry in the sun

by different mechanisms.

La República de Café, ubicado en

Ciudad de Guatemala, donde serán

recibidos por Anaité o Daniel, quienes

los atenderán como en casa, y les harán

degustar de un buen desayuno típico

acompañado de una taza de café, la

cual podrán escoger en base a su gusto

y a la característica de cualquiera de

las regiones de café de Guatemala, pues

en la República de Café, tienen todos los

tipos de café ya tostados y listos para

ser bebidos y disfrutados. Por cierto, en

la República de Café, además, también

podrán aprender a catar todos los tipos

de café, pues hay distintos cursos tanto

para principiantes como para baristas

expertos para ello.

Luego del desayuno, serán transportados

a la finca en vehículos Range Rover 4x4,

pues el acceso a la finca requiere de

este tipo de carros, y al cabo de una

hora y cuarto llegarán a este lindo

paraíso. Iniciarán caminando en un

sendero rodeado de todo tipo de

vegetación y de árboles gigantes y por

supuesto de las matas de la planta de

café. Luego llegarán al Beneficio, donde

recibirán una breve explicación de cómo

se procesan los granos de café una vez

éstos ya han sido puestos a secar al

sol, por los distintos mecanismos que las

máquinas efectúan.


Después de esta explicación, llegarán al

pequeño rancho de visitantes, un área

rodeada de muchas flores de todo los

colores y de plantas de Pitaya, donde

también en un pequeño estanque de

agua, los niños podrán pescar y liberar

truchas, pues en la finca les prestarán las

cañas de pescar, ya que esto es parte

de la experiencia de este tour. Tomarán

un delicioso y saludable almuerzo para

luego-si así lo desean- caminar en los

alrededores de la finca y visitar una poza

natural de agua pura de montaña, o bien

subir al área donde podrán observar la

siembra y cuidado de las pequeñas matas

de café, y como éstas las van sembrando

conforme van creciendo, para luego

finalmente ser plantadas en su lugar final,

donde pasarán varios meses hasta que

den sus primeros frutos rojos y así de esa

manera continuar todo el proceso que

culmina con beber la deliciosa taza de

café. Después de estas visitas regresarán

a los vehículos para ser transportados de

vuelta a la República de Café, donde

para cerrar el día, les darán para degustar

un digestivo o bien una taza de café.

Este “Coffee Tour” de la Finca el Tempisque

es sin lugar a dudas un viaje muy

recomendado para compartir en familia, y

como no, también para aprender un poco

más de esta deliciosa bebida, motivo de

orgullo de todos los guatemaltecos a nivel

After this explanation, you will arrive at

the little ranch, an area surrounded by

beautiful flowers of all colors and the

Pitaya fruit, and where also in a small

pond, the kids can fish and release

trout’s, as in this farm they will borrow

you the fishing rods, because this is

around the farm and visit a natural pool

of mountain water, or climb to the area

There is a well-known Latin song that says

“When God created Eden he thought of

America”. Certainly the Verapaces region

in Guatemala has a few destinations

so lush and beautiful that come pretty

close to what I imagine Eden would be.

Lanquín is one of them, with its unexplored

lands and green pelleted mountains, its

infinite turquoise rivers and lagoons, and

mysterious caves seem to go on forever.

On top of a hill in Lanquin is the “Zephyr

Lodge”, a hostel where globetrotters,

adventurers and the most avid explorers

en América” y me atrevo a decir que la

región de las Verapaces es una de esas

partes de Guatemala que nos hace

pensar que realmente existen destinos

que parecieran ser un Edén en todo el

de estos ejemplos, pues hoy todavía

existen lugares vírgenes e inexplorados

en esta tierra de montañas verdes, ríos

y pozas de todo tipo de tonalidades

turquesas y verdes, y un buen número de

cuevas que parecieran no tener fin.

En lo alto de una colina de Lanquín se

encuentra el Hostal “Zephyr Lodge” un

lugar ideal para conocer a personas

trotamundos, y compartir muy buena

comida (las pizzas al horno de leña

son su especialidad) y todo tipo

de bebidas al ritmo de muy buena

música.

Fuimos recibidos por Thomas, uno

de los propietarios que nos enseñó

toda el área, y el restaurante y

comedor, que está bajo un gran

rancho donde todos los huéspedes

comparten sus experiencias a la hora

de comer y beber, pues compartir es

una característica de los Hostales

de esta área. En el Zephyr Lodge,

podrán encontrar cuartos privados,

bungalows con vistas espectaculares

hacia las montañas y el río, o bien

cuartos privados para compartir con

los amigos, o simplemente acampar

muy seguro rodeado de la naturaleza.

Las Escobas is a park located near

Puerto Barrios on the way to Punta Palma,

where a hidden paradise awaits you.

Being part of one of the biggest tropical

forest in Guatemala, you´ll be able to

enjoy and admire more than 400 species

of reptiles, birds, and other animals as well

as thousands of plants and vegetation.

This amazing park is kept by “Fundaeco”

(Foundation for the Eco-development

and Preservation); they have made an

amazing job in preserving this natural

gem. Upon arrival, your find the visitor’s

center and a small herpetarium where

you can see a wide variety of serpents

and snakes that live in the tropical forest.

al parque encontrarán en

el centro de visitantes un

pequeño herpetario, donde

podrán observar a todas

las especies de culebras y

serpientes que habitan en los

bosques tropicales húmedos.

Luego los guías locales darán

las explicaciones de los dos

senderos para recorrer en el

parque, y la ubicación de las

pozas naturales de aguas de

color turquesa.

Este parque cuenta con dos

senderos, el denominado “de

las cascadas” y el sendero

de “bosque tropical”; y

durante todo el recorrido de

cualquiera de los dos, podrán

observar todo tipo de aves,

y árboles, pero sobretodo

sentirán mientras caminan, la

humedad y el calor que habita

en todo el lugar, pues es lo

característico de este tipo de

bosques. Al cabo de recorrer

unos minutos el sendero “de las

cascadas”, llegarán a la cueva

de los murciélagos, donde

actualmente habitan alrededor

de 14 especies diferentes de

este animal, y donde a partir

de las 5 de la tarde, podrán

observarlos salir a buscar

algo de comida. Luego de

observar la cueva, llegarán a

la primera poza, y desde ya se

impresionarán de observar los

ríos de agua pura de montaña

On both trails you’ll be able

to enjoy the lush vegetation of

the humid tropical rain forest

so distinctive of the region.

One path is called the Falling

water Path, and the other is

the Rainforest Path. After a few

minutes of walking down the

Falling Water path you’ll arrive

at the “bat cave” where more

than 14 species of bats live.

Beyond the cave you’ll reach the

first pond, this turquoise pool is

formed by several cascades of

fresh water that come down the

mountain, inviting you to take

a dip to relieve the heat and

humidity of the trajectory. The

water is cool but very refreshing,

and shortly after going in, you

will be able to feel and see how

thousands of minnows gently bite

your skin, but fear not; it’s all part

of the experience!

After the refreshing dive, we

head to the Rainforest Path

where we arrive at the lookout

bridge and the amazing “hidden

cascade”. Afterward trekking for

a while around this area you’ll

soon enough understand why

some called this place a wildlife

sanctuary; this is the Tropical

Rainforest at its best! Get to

Luego de este refrescante baño, nos

dirigimos al sendero de “bosque tropical”

para poder observar el puente mirador

y la Cascada Escondida. Después de

recorrer ambos senderos, comprendimos

entonces porque este parque es

denominado por algunas personas como

un “Santuario Natural”, pues es un lugar

donde podrán disfrutar y apreciar al

máximo la belleza del bosque tropical

Así que mientras viajábamos a través de las exuberantes colinas de las Verapaces,

nosotros, así como muchos viajeros hambrientos y cansados antes, nos encontramos

ante la visión de algo nuevo, un oasis solitario postrado justo al lado de la carretera

a Cobán que con una estética sentimental nos recibiría con lo cómodo de lo familiar

en un ambiente tan hospitalario como podrían imaginar.

So whilst journeying through the lush Verapazian hills we, as many hungry and weary

travelers before us, found ourselves at the sight of something new, an oasis of sorts,

standing alone in the middle of the road to Cobán, which with a sentimental aesthetic

would receive us into the comfortable of the familiar in as hospitable ambiance as

you could picture.

Y así, como Hansel y Gretel encontraron

su perfecta casa de caramelo en el

claro del bosque, se encontrarán atraído

hacia adentro por la promesa de una

casa con detalles pintorescos y comida

que haría sentir a los Hermanos Grimm

orgullosos. Macetas con delicadas flores,

una chimenea de leña, ollas y cacerolas

que cuelgan del techo, divertidos

espantapájaros, todo tan encantador

como lo aconseja el exterior pintoresco y,

por supuesto, ninguna bruja mala a la vista.

La histórica herencia alemana de la

región se fusiona con productos y ricas

tradiciones guatemaltecas en esta

acogedora casa de campo donde se

puede descansar junto a la chimenea

para apaciguar el clima frío de las

Verapaces mientras deleitan longanizas,

chorizos, carnes, sándwiches, mermeladas

caseras , jaleas, pasteles, galletas y pies.

Si esto no prueba ser suficiente, en la parte

posterior de la propiedad encontrarán

corriendo un pequeño arroyo y una familia

de patos que residen en un pequeño

granero rojo y pasan sus tardes graznando

mientras esperan que pequeños jóvenes

visitantes se acerquen a compartir un poco

de su almuerzo con ellos .

perfect candy cottage in the clearing

in the woods, you’ll find yourself lured in

by the promise of home felt picturesque

detail and food that would make the

Brothers Grimm proud. Dainty flower pots,

a wood burning fireplace, pots and

pans that hang from the ceiling, funny

looking scarecrows, all as charming as

advised by the quaint exterior and, of

course, no wicked witch to be seen.

The German heritage that is historical

to the region fuses with Guatemalan

produce and rich traditions in this cozy

cottage where you may rest by the

fireplace to offset the chilly Verapaz

weather while you feast on bratwursts,

spicy sausage, Italian sausage, cold

meats, sandwiches, homemade jams,

marmalades, cakes, cookies and pies.

If the latter did not suffice, on the back

of the property you’ll find a flowing

creek and a family of ducklings that

reside in a tiny red barn and spend their

afternoons quaking about awaiting tiny

young visitors to share some of their

lunch with them.
