Austin Technology Councils ince 1994, the Austin Technology

Council has been the principal point of connection for companies from the technology industry that rep-

resent a critical mass of businesses in Central Texas. It is their mission to ensure that Austin maintains its world-renowned technology status, and a community that capitalizes on its assets — university-based research, venture funding, a broad array of support services, an entrepre-neurial culture and a rich pool of intellec-tual talent and leadership.

As the leading organization representing technology interests in Central Texas, ATC is solely focused on helping Central Texas’ technology companies get to the next level. Whether it’s creating one-on-one introduc-tions to build connections, offering net-working opportunities to facilitate partner-ships, or building market exposure through sponsorship and advertising, ATC’s commit-ment remains the same. ATC measures its success by the success of its members.

While no organization can be every-thing to everyone, ATC strives to provide companies with a diverse set of tools, resources and programs from which mem-bers can take advantage depending upon their individual needs. By joining ATC, you

connect

and your employees will have an opportu-nity to gain valuable experience, insights and even business contacts from our completely redesigned programs, services and events. Become part of a team that is totally committed to main-taining and enhancing Austin’s status as a world-renowned technology community. And to give something back to the unique city that inspires us all, join the team today and start making a difference that counts for all of us.

ATC is focused solely on helping technology firms in Austin grow to the next level. Therefore, because of the organic nature of the organization and the critical role members play in ATC’s evolution, all tech companies in Central Texas should take advantage of membership with ATC. With corporate membership, all company employees benefit from belonging to ATC. ATC’s diversity of programs, services, and resources focus on developing business best practices, and Austin’s emerging technology verticals offer opportunities for all levels of the organization.

A ustin is most certainly an energetic retreat from the ordinary. It’s a city that is internationally known as a high-density haven for technology

and creative professional brainpower fueled by an array of targeted programs and institutions.

Austin is globally recognized for the great quality of life and dynamic high-tech economy. Austin is a wireless hub with major design centers and headquarters for the top four wireless semiconductor com-panies. Billions of chips manufactured or designed in Austin power millions of mobile phones and wireless devices. It’s the top city in the country in terms of broadband pene-tration and third in terms of wireless access.

The talent pool may be the most ener-getic, innovative and educated in the world. Nearly 39% have attained a college degree or higher, compared to the national average of 27%. Here, the best and brightest lead many diverse tech companies.

Local Businesses Technology is a significant part of Aus-

tin’s economy. There are 3,400 companies in the tech sector, from large Fortune 500 companies to smaller tech startups. All together these companies employ 18% of the private sector workforce and 34% of the private sector payroll.

In 2007, more than 2,100 patents were assigned to inventors in Austin. IBM’s pro-cessor technology, designed in part in Austin, power the Sony Playstation, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution. Freescale, headquartered in Austin, produces i.MX multimedia applications processors that bring high performance video and graphics to innovative portable mobile devices and 3D gaming.

Nintendo, NCsoft, Sony, Blizzard, CRE8, Aspyr, Amaze Entertainment, Trinigy, Heat-wave Interactive, Kings Isle, Bioware and Critical Interactive Mass are all located in Austin. With one of the most vibrant game development communities in the world, as well as a role in expanding the platforms available for interactive entertainment, Austin is a premier region for the new era in enter-tainment, communications and collaboration.

Austin is also driving the build-out of a wireless future where voice, data and creative media converge on open wireless and computing platforms. The University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest wire-less research centers in the country. Qual-comm, Nokia, Silicon Laboratories and AT&T are also part of the Central Texas engineering cluster for wireless chips, net-works and software.

Associations like the Austin Wire-less Alliance (AWA) and the Digital Media Council within Skillpoint Alliance work to develop, sustain and promote Austin as a global leader in business activity, technical innovation, and community participation.

Regional Funding InitiativesAs part of an economic development

strategy, funding for start-ups is essential to growth. The Austin Chamber of Commerce is involved in several programs that facili-tate funding for small, technology-based companies. The Austin Chamber houses the Central Texas Regional Center for Innova-tion and Commercialization (CenTex RCIC), which is the local coordinating body that facilitates Texas’s Emerging Technology Fund (ETF). Austin is also home to the Cen-tral Texas Angel Network (CTAN), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing quality seed-stage investment opportunities which will help emerging companies grow in the Central Texas region. These groups have extensive experience with high-tech startups and early stage companies.

During the past decade, Austin has been among: best places to live; most recession proof; fastest growing cities; the nation’s best-read; most computer-literate cities; and the most fit cities in the U.S. Austin is the Human Capital.

fAsT fACTsOver 100 Austin companies employ over 4,000 people within the wireless industry. Within 100 miles of Austin, 39 colleges and universities enroll over 330,000 students. Also an entertainment hub, it’s home to Austin City Limits and South by Southwest. Notable companies include:

You don’t just start a business at 20 and take it public without garnering some exceptionally valuable tips along the way. So

whether you are running a company or looking for a job, or just want to learn a thing or two, Michael R. Budagher’s remarks are a thought-provoking read. Michael, although currently retired, is the founder and developer of many com-panies including Specialty Teleconstructer. Specialty Teleconstructer was taken public under Michael’s leadership and ultimately purchased by American Tower Corporation (AMT), a leading operator of wireless communication.

Mr. Budagher built his company with the employee in mind. “It was about empowering employees. Many people speak about empowering employees but they don’t give them the right tools and they don’t allow them to fail. Making a mistake is okay, it is how they handle their mistake and how they grow and learn from the mistake that is important.”

After starting his company he real-ized over time, with traditional perfor-mance reviews in place, that a perfor-mance review was too subjective. If the foreman was having a great day and an employee had had a great week, it was

3

faces in the crowd

movers and shakers

a great review. Likewise, when a person who traditionally did a top notch job was in the penalty box during the week of per-

formance reviews, his performance review was negative. After removing this metric, Michael imple-mented a rigorous training schedule in which an employee could choose to participate. He empow-ered his employees to decide where they went in the company. It is impor-tant to note that Mr. Buda-gher holds employees who are content and per-

forming well at their current position as equally valuable members of the company.

Integrity was one of The First Tee values most important to him. Michael feels that many of the problems facing large companies today stems from the lack of integrity at the top of the company. If the company leaders have the utmost integrity, it trickles down to every single employee and reinforces that the leadership has the company’s best interest at heart, not his or her own. If leadership sets the bar exceptionally high for themselves, it greatly helps to insure a company culture of integ-rity, honesty and hard work.

As far as retaining and attracting employees, Michael said, “It all goes back to the human element. People want to

be recognized for their contribution and appreciated. Money doesn’t motivate, nor does it make your employees stick around. If you have done a good job hiring someone whose personality fits your cor-porate culture, and who had a light in their eye during the interview, you’ve got yourself someone who is going to perform and is going to positively contribute to the work environment. A hiring candidate with potential and the right personality far out-weigh someone who looks good on paper.”

The only thing standing in the way of Michael from harnessing his entrepreneurial spirit and growing another business is that he wouldn’t consider running a company until he had spent a few weeks doing every single job. His employees have always known that he would never ask them to do something he hasn’t done, nor something he wasn’t willing to do himself.

Michael, who just celebrated his fif-tieth birthday, is someone you’d wish would come out of retirement just so you could work for him! Keep your resume posted just in case he does, you’ll want to be one of his first hires!
