CTE STAR Student Nominations – Week 4  

 Marisa Schulz

What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved? Marisa Schulz is involved in FBLA as the Historian.    Tell us about why you nominated this student:   Marisa is extremely organized and a go‐getter.  She is constantly working to be the best she can be.  She is a leader in our organization and school.  She has helped me as a first‐year adviser with guidance and a grateful heart to assist in all endeavors.  Meetings, order t‐shirts (designing t‐shirt), fundraisers (food drives), FBLA Week Recognition, she was the first to sign‐up.  How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education? Through community service projects and professional growth student conferences.    What are this student’s future plans?   She will be attending a four‐year University; major undeclared. 

 Taite Heinz  

School:  Dakota Valley High School Name of Student: Taite Heinz Grade: 11 Nominated by:  Ms. Theresa Trout, Business Education / FBLA Adviser  Which career cluster is this student most active in?   Business Administration  

What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved? Taite Heinz is involved in FBLA as the Parliamentarian; he is running for State Officer this year.  He is the President for Spanish Club.    Tell us about why you nominated this student:   Taite is always striving to make our FBLA Chapter more engaging and active.  This year Taite has made many positive contributions such as, setting up company tours with local businesses for FBLA Members, initiating a workshop for our local chapter to be lead and presented by USD FBLA officer, and raising awareness about our local chapter at school and in the community. Taite is extremely interested furthering his education in Business and participating in Business Chapter of FBLA at the college level.  He is also running for FBLA State Officer his senior year.  How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education?   Taite takes CTE courses in high school.  He will have the opportunity to take college classes as well.  He continually brainstorms new avenues to enrich his local chapter and invite new members.  Taite has taken an active leadership role and suggested we promote our chapter during FBLA week with a table panel during three lunch periods where the DV student body can ask us questions and promote the organization for new potential members. This year he has spoken 

with the HS principal to make plans for next year’s local events, running the Spirit Club as a small business, keeping the books, how to increase sales, etc.,    What are this student’s future plans?   Attend college, majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Spanish.   

 Aaron Hoelscher  

School: T.F Riggs Name of Student: Aaron Hoelscher Grade: 12  Nominated by: Tom Rogers CTE Instructor  Which career cluster is this student most active in?   Manufacturing  

Tell us about why you nominated this student:  Aaron is a student who always likes a challenge, and has great work ethic. His junior year he built a Drift Trike from scratch. He developed the plans by using his drafting knowledge and applied that knowledge to the Plasma Cam Cad program to cut all of his material with in the design and then used his welding knowledge to build all of the components and parts for the Drift Trike. Then Aaron welded the entire project up from start to finish. After the Trike was built he used his Mechanical back ground to install a small engine that he purchased from Harbor Freight. Aaron’s ability to use the knowledge learned in a variety of his High School course and apply it to a complexed project shows just how special this young man is and he will have a bright future ahead of him.  How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education? Aaron has taken several CTE courses, while in High school. Welding Technology Advanced Welding, Intro to Architect and Construction and Intro to Drafting and Design.  Aaron also has taken Honors English, AP Physics, AP Calculus and AP 

Chemistry.  Aaron is not afraid of work or getting his hands dirty. Aaron is currently in Cabinetry and Architectural drafting class this semester.  What are this student’s future plans? Aaron plans to attend South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for Mechanical Engineering. He hopes to get involved with Ag and hopes to help make farming more precise with the development of more efficient machinery.  

 Arianna Feller  

School:  Harrisburg High School Name of Student:  Arianna Feller Grade: 12 Nominated by: Mrs. Tracy Kern, Harrisburg FACS teacher Which career cluster is this student most active in?   Health Science and Human Services  What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved? FCCLA – 4 years of involvement    Arianna has grown with her leadership over the past four years.  Last year she was SD FCCLA’s state president.  Locally she has served as chapter treasurer and this year as chapter’s president.  This year she is also serving on FCCLA Advocacy Leadership Team.     HOSA – 3 years of involvement  Tell us about why you nominated this student: I absolutely love this student!  When I encouraged her to run for state office a couple years ago, she saw it as a good opportunity for her to “get out of her box”.  She was a shy and reserved leader.  She knew this was an area she needed to 

work on.  Seriously…..what student thinks this way!  I can tell you this, her goal worked and today she is a young leader who can stand with the best of young leaders across the state.      How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education?   Arianna has used every opportunity at Harrisburg to make her a better student and leader.  She has taken several FACS and health related courses at HHS.  She is one of those students who used every hour given to her to take a class.  This load allowed her to volunteer at Sanford Hospital her senior year. Thus, she was named Sanford’s Volunteer of the month.  What are this student’s future plans? Arianna would like to pursue a career in the health science field.  I believe she will start this adventure down at USD.  

 Elise Wheeler  

School: Philip High School Name of Student: Elise Wheeler Grade: 12 Nominated by: Brigitte Brucklacher, FACS teacher and FCCLA adviser  Which career cluster is this student most active in?   Human Services  What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved?   Elise is a four‐year, active member in FCCLA.  Elise is one of 10 state FCCLA officers and holds the office of SD FCCLA Vice‐President of Recreation.  She is the current Region 1 FCCLA president and the local Philip FCCLA president.  She has held a local Philip FCCLA office every high school year and was the District IX 

FCCLA secretary/treasurer as a junior.  In addition to these leadership positions, Elise has participated in FCCLA STAR events on the state level receiving  in Illustrated Talk a gold rating and in Promote & Publicize a gold rating.  She represented South Dakota at the 2016 National FCCLA Leadership Conference in San Diego.  She led the delegation in ice breakers and cheers!  She represented the organization and state with enthusiasm and class.  Among her many accomplishments at our local chapter, I am particularly proud of her chairing many service projects such as Trick or Treat for Cystic Fibrosis, Dig Pink for Breast Cancer,  the Angel Tree, Santa’s Secret Shop, and the 5K Run.  Tell us about why you nominated this student:  Elise is an outstanding example of what CTE does for students.  Elise came to my class four years ago as an unconfident, giggly freshman.  FCCLA and CTE have contributed to her becoming a poised, self‐assured young woman.  Elise does all she does with style and confidence.  She is heading to Pierre next week to participate in the DOE/SDCTE Legislative Shadowing experience.  She will be a shining example for CTE.  How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education? Elise has taken classes in Human Services every year of her high school career.  She has taken:  Foundations of CTE, Nutrition and Wellness, Interior Design, Parenting, Personal Finance, two years of Internships, and Service Learning.  These are in addition to 15 dual credits toward college.   Recently, Elise interviewed at Mt. Marty for college scholarships.  She proudly wore her state FCCLA uniform for the interview which included the official FCCLA red blazer.   She noticed other candidates in short skirts and high heels.  She felt very professional and appropriate for the interview and knew this because of her CTE experience.  What are this student’s future plans? Elise will be attending Mt. Marty College to major in criminal justice and psychology.    

 Carolyn Groves  

School: Wessington Springs High School Name of Student:  Carolyn Groves Grade:  12 Nominated by:  Charlotte Mohling  Which career cluster is this student most active in?   Human Services  What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved? Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.  Carolyn has been an active member of FCCLA for four years. She has served as the local chapter President and District 5 Treasurer.  Currently, she is one of 10 members of the FCCLA State Outreach Leadership Team.  The team promotes the national outreach project, Lead2Feed, throughout the state.  Carolyn has completed in FCCLA STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) for four years.  She has competed in Illustrated Talk, Focus on Children, and Food Innovations.  The last two years she has received a Top Superior in STAR Event competition.  Carolyn also has been involved in numerous local FCCLA projects, such as School Blood Drive, Elementary School Fall Festival, Fall Fun Fair and Chili Feed, Healthy Snack Project, and activities at the local nursing home. This year, she completed a major project for her Lead2Feed Project by promoting and raising funds for the local Blue Bag Nutrition Program for Children.  Tell us about why you nominated this student: 

Carolyn is committed to receiving a top quality education.  She challenges her abilities and has enrolled in classes that will help her with her future career goal.  During her senior year, Carolyn enrolled in dual credit courses through Mitchell Technical Institute to begin her coursework in the Human Services Technician Program.  Carolyn also is an active member of our student body.  She is involved in instrumental and vocal music, cheerleading, and Student Council.    I have enjoyed working with Carolyn throughout her years in high school.  She is friendly, possesses a positive attitude, accepts responsibility, works hard, and interacts well with a variety of age groups.  

How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education? Carolyn has enrolled in family and consumer sciences courses, such as CTE Foundations, Nutrition and Wellness, Human Development, and Health Sciences Careers, that will helped her decide on a possible career choice in the Human Services Career Cluster.  Carolyn, also, extended her learning and leadership skill development through active participation in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.  What are this student’s future plans? Carolyn has been accepted in the Human Services Technician Program and Mitchell Technical Institute.  After completing her educating, she would like to help others somewhere in South Dakota.  

 Sydney Swanson   

School: Waubay High School     Name of Student: Sydney Swanson   Grade: 12 Nominated by: Chelsea Larson 

Which career cluster is this student most active in?   Sydney is actively involved in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources cluster.  

What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved? Sydney is active in FFA.  She currently is Webster/Waubay Chapter President and District 1 Chapter President.  She also has received placings in many FFA events for example she received 3rd Place at State for Radio Broadcasting, 2nd Place at NESD for Range judging, and received 1st Place for at State for Forestry Placement.  Sydney has been actively involved in FFA since her 7th grade year.  Tell us about why you nominated this student: I am nominating Sydney because she embraces the Agriculture Career Cluster and is a huge advocate for herself in keeping active in FFA.  Academically she is a sound student, she is continually looking to better herself through her activities and class choices.  She is a role model for our younger students and she is always working towards success.  How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education? Sydney is Chapter and District President; she participates in land and range judging competitions and attends state and national conferences for FFA.  She speaks to younger students about the benefits of FFA and Agriculture classes to get them involved because she understands the benefits these opportunities have offered her.  What are this student’s future plans? Sydney plans to attend SDSU in the fall to major in Animal Science and minor in Agribusiness, eventually attending Iowa State for Veterinary Medicine.   

 Michaela Laughlin 

School: Rapid City Central High School Name of Student: Michaela Laughlin Grade: 12 Nominated by: Laura Lloyd‐Smith, Counselor  Which career cluster is this student most active in?   Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources  What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved? Michaela Laughlin has been an exemplary member of our Rapid City FFA program. She has received her green hand, chapter degrees and has been nominated to the state association for her state FFA degree. Michaela will represent District V FFA as a Star in Ag Placement for her Supervised Agricultural Experience as a veterinary assistant. Michaela served one year as a chapter officer, and currently heads our community service committee. Michaela has also competed at a high level for the last three years in the district and state Veterinary Science Contest. Michaela has been an invaluable asset to the Rapid City FFA chapter throughout her high school experience.   Tell us about why you nominated this student: Michaela is an outstanding student at Central High School and a prime example of someone who persevered. I believe she would admit that she had a somewhat shaky start to her freshman year but since then she has completely turned around her high school career. She will graduate with a 3.5+ GPA and is in the top 20% of her class with a highly competitive ACT score. She clearly found her ‘niche’ in the Ag Science Department! How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education? Michaela has taken 6.0 credits in our Ag Science Department and earned A’s in all classes including Forestry, Horticulture, Companion Animal Science, Wildlife, Recreational Resources and Advanced Animal Science.  What are this student’s future plans? Michaela plans to attend college at the University of Arizona and pursue a degree in veterinary sciences.  

 Emma Hoffman  

School: Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy Name of Student: Emma Hoffman Grade: 12 Nominated by: Cindy Gerlach  Which career cluster is this student most active in?    Hospitality and Tourism; Health Sciences  

What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved?   Emma is a member of HOSA, she has been an officer for the past two years and competed for three years.  Tell us about why you nominated this student:   Emma is a student that is driven to do her best.  She uses her natural ability to the fullest capacity and this is evident by her academic record and extracurricular involvement.  Her class schedule includes advanced placement classes as well as dual credit college courses and Career and Technical courses. Academically, Emma has demonstrated that she has a great deal of ability.  In the classroom she is focused and on task, very attentive and willing to help out where needed.   How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education?   Emma has taken eleven Career and Technical Education courses and belongs to a CTE student organization.  Emma has taken and passed the National ServSafe certification, she was able to use that certification when applying for her job working in dietetics at the nursing home.  What are this student’s future plans? 

Emma’s plans after high school are to attend SDSU for her undergrad degree and then continue on to become a Physician’s Assistant.   

 Mahayla Foos  

School:  Mitchell Career and Technical Education Academy Name of Student: Mahayla Foos Grade:  12 Nominated by:  Cindy Gerlach  Which career cluster is this student most active in?    Hospitality and Tourism; Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Business Management and Administration   

What, if any, Career and Technical Student Organizations does the student participate in, and how are they involved?   Mahayla is a member of the ProStart culinary and management teams, an FCCLA and FFA member.  On the ProStart culinary team she has helped plan the menu, cost out recipes and prepares the meal and as a member of the management team she has helped with research on putting together a restaurant concept and will also help pitch the idea to the judges.  Mahayla has competed in various competitions in FCCLA and FFA at the state and national level.  

Tell us about why you nominated this student:   

Mahayla is one of those students that stands out.  I enjoy having Mahayla as a student because she knows how to get things done. She is not afraid to put effort into her work and go above and beyond what is asked of her. She shows this ability in the classroom by thoroughly completing assignments and never leaving anything left undone. Mahayla has no problem adapting to new conditions, she is very flexible and is willing to experience something new. She always has a positive attitude, wants to learn and is willing to try anything. She is not afraid to ask questions so she has a better understanding of what we are covering in class.    Mahayla is a responsible

person and displays this through tasks she has been assigned. In the classroom Mahayla shows great organizational skills and time management.  How has this student embraced Career and Technical Education?  Mahayla has taken twelve different Career and Technical Education courses in various clusters, belongs to two CTE student organizations and is on the ProStart competition teams.    What are this student’s future plans?   Mahayla’s plans after high school are to attend Black Hills State University and major in ESL.
