Scarborough Station is managed by FTPE and is not only home to the longest bench in the world but also loved by the local community and tourists alike.Around £100k of investment has been made to the station with improved waiting areas, a fullyaccessible booking office, modern buffet area and automatic doors, making the station comfortable for all. Disabled toilets have also been installed, with additional male and female facilities and baby changing. The modern improvements were carefully considered to complement the traditionalbuilding. Scarborough station is accredited to theDepartment for Transport’s Secure Station Scheme.

Over half a million journeys to Scarborough each year are completed by rail with around 300,000 of these customers using FTPE services. FTPE is committed to further enhancing Scarborough's appeal and reputation and has set up colleague led committees to initiate regeneration ideas and schemes. Green Grants have also been issued to the local area to help plant new trees and encourage a more environmentally friendly resort.

Nothing could be nicer than a family trip to Scarborough, walking along the beach, looking out to the sea and eating good old Scarborough fish and chips! Or could it?…How about during your stay you try something different?

Recently celebrity chefs have championed fish in its many different forms and have proved you don’t need it ‘battering’ for it to taste good. In Scarborough we have a variety of top quality restaurants and cafes creating fish dishes, which don’t involve deep-frying.

Try some oak and apple wood smoked local haddock or cod, perfect with a poached egg, some gorgeous crab cakes, linguine or ravioli or some local sea bass cooked whole and stuffed with herbs of your choice. With such a wide variety of local fish, we have something to offer everyone from the rich taste of Brill to the creamy taste of Hake. Have you tried lemon sole fillets rolled around some prawns and baked in the oven or floured and fried local mackerel as a filling for a perfect sandwich?

Visitors to Scarborough already enjoy some of the cleanest beaches and bathing water in Britain.

In November 2010, however, Yorkshire Water, in partnership with arange of organisations, launched a multi-million pound programmeof work with the aim of turning Yorkshire’s beaches and bathingwaters into the best in Europe.

£50 million will be spent in Scarborough between 2012 and 2014 to improve the waste water pumping, storage and treatment facilities.

This is part of a five-year initiative to deliver environmentalimprovements along 50-miles of coastline, stretching fromWithernsea to Staithes, so ensuring that Yorkshire’s bathing waterscan achieve a new ‘excellent’ standard, due to come into force in 2015 as part of the European Revised Bathing Water Directive.

SURF’S UP...Surfing is getting more popular every year in Scarborough, both for dedicated surfers and people new to the sport .

For the last 2 years the British surfing pro tour has come to Scarborough gracing our shores with some of the finest surfing talent that there is to offer. As well as the surfing competition there are stalls and other events in the unlikely chance the surfing doesn’t keep you excited. This October the competition is here again hopefully bigger than ever.

If you fancy trying surfing there are shops that hire surf equipment and give surfing lessons in Scarborough and at Cayton bay. Scarborough’s beaches are RNLI lifeguard patrolled so safety is never an issue. Remember if you go in the water always follow the advice of the lifeguards. STEVE CRAWFORD

RED AND YELLOW FLAGS indicate the area patrolled by lifeguards. These are the safe areas to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables.

BLACK AND WHITE CHEQUERED FLAGS indicate an area zoned by lifeguards for use of watercraft such as surfboards and kayaks. NEVER swim or bodyboard in these areas.

RED FLAG The red flag indicates danger. NEVER enter the water when the red flag is flying, under any circumstances.

ORANGE WINDSOCK indicates offshore wind conditions. You should NEVER use an inflatable when the sock is flying.

SCARBOROUGH – THE FIRST SEASIDE RESORTFor families and children of all ages, digging in the clean sands and bathing in Scarborough’s seawater are pastimes that are as popular as ever. For nearly 400 years, Scarborough has been a seaside resort attracting hundreds of thousands to sample the delights of its twin bays.

It was in 1626 that the medicinal properties of Scarborough’s spring water were ‘discovered’ by Mrs Tomyzin Farrer. ‘Taking the waters’ soon became a locally accepted medicine and stories about their fame soon spread. Doctors started to promote sea bathing as a healthy pastime and advised healthy males to bathe for five minutes whilst ladies and children should only stay in the water for two minutes. Soon Scarborough experienced an influx of visitors and responded accordingly by providing accommodation and other attractions. Thus the seaside resort of Scarborough was born.

After the railway from York was opened in 1845, visitor numbers grew and in the following years many of the attractions still loved today were built.

TOP PROGRAMME OF ROAD RACING AHEADFor 2013 the Auto 66 Club have attracted a super line up of events at the Oliver’s Mount Race Circuit. The club have dropped the annual Bike Week to concentrate on the Road Racing events.

The very first Road Race of the season in the UK will be the Ian Watson on 21st April. The Barry Sheene meeting has become a full week end of events, with racing for Modern and Classic machines. The meeting will include Parades for Classic Race Bikes as well as the Yorkshire Coast British Motorcycle Club, who will parade Vintage and Classic Machines. There will also be parades for the Itallian, Benelli machines.

The following month will see the annual Cock o’ the North Continental road races. The club are hoping to attract competitors from all parts of Europe to this event

Rounding off the Road Race season in Scarborough will be the International Gold Cup, which is the premier Road Race event in England, attracting the top TT riders and a huge crowd

As well as the road racing the club also run two Speed Hillclimb events at Oliver’s Mount which cater for all classes of Vehicle from Vintage to Modern, including two, three and four wheel machines. The first event is the Scarborough Festival of Speed on 4th & 5th May, the second one is a National event on 18th August.

SCARBOROUGH’S LOCAL THEATRE with an international reputationThe Stephen Joseph Theatre is a cultural icon of the Yorkshire region, welcoming over 100,000 people each year, whilst many more experience its work on tour. Widely known for its world premieres of almost all of Alan Ayckbourn’s plays, it shows a year-round programme of drama, music, comedy, dance, poetry and more.

Housed in a beautiful 1930s building, the SJT boasts two auditoria, a gallery, restaurant and bar, and hosts weddings, events and conferences.

If you are visiting Scarborough for the first time, or are fairly new to the town, you may not have heard about the wonderful YMCA Theatre. One of only two or three YMCAs in the country to have a theatre, Scarborough’s is probably the best equipped to showcase the amazing wealth of talented amateur performers from the town and further afield and is situated just 5-10 minutes walk from the shopping precinct, with lots of parking nearby.

Seating 290 people in air-conditioned comfort, the theatre boasts tiered seating giving an excellent view from virtually every seat and a welcoming atmosphere that puts audiences at ease.

Although the theatre hosts mostly amateur productions, don’t be put off by thoughts of cringe-worthy, under-rehearsed plays and musicals, performed by people who can’t hold a note. The reputation gained over the past five decades for staging top-quality and terrific value for money productions has been well-earned. You can be confident of experiencing a thoroughly entertaining evening.

This year’s shows promise great things…

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION 3-6 April will be a variety show inspired by famous films and shows. CHARITY GALA SHOWCASE 10-12 May - to raise funds for the theatre’s on-going development.GREASE 22 July-29 August, is the YMCA’s summer show - if you are going to see any show this year - make it this one! A CHRISTMAS CRACKER in November and December.SLEEPING BEAUTY the YMCA’s pantomime will finish the year on a high.
