Welcome

This booklet contains all of the information relating to this year’s inter-school competition and festival programme for Infant, Junior and Primary schools in Chesterfield. This calendar of events forms a major part of the new Derbyshire PE and Sport plan being offered to schools that have contributed to the School Sport Partnership in Chesterfield.

Although it is anticipated that there will be minimal changes to the calendar included, any changes will be notified via the School Sport Partnership website. The website will also be used for entries.

The School Games is one of the flagship legacy programmes linked to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and sits at the core of the Governments investment in school sport. Financial support is being received from the Department of Media, Culture and Sport, the Department of Health, the Department for Education and Sport England Lottery Funding. The School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. The Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools, between schools, at county/area level and a national finals event:

• Level 1 - sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition • Level 2 - individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions • Level 3 – the county/area will stage multi-sport School Games festivals as a culmination of year-round school sport competition • Level 4 – the Sainsbury's School Games finals: a national multi-sport event where the most talented young people in the UK will be selected to compete in our sporting venues

Booking Events Online

All competition, festivals and other events will be viewable online at our new website www.chesterfieldssp.co.uk To log in to the website please enter your email address followed by your password. You do not need to log in to book events. If you do not know your password or have any difficulties please contact Mark Tournier on 01246 565825 or [email protected]

Entering Competitions

The process for entering your school into a competition is as follows:

Go to www.chesterfieldssp.co.uk

Click “Events” on menu

Select “Primary Competition” on the additional menu bar

Select appropriate month to view competitions available

Select “View Details” for the competition that you wish to book

Select “Book Now”

Please complete the essential details (with red asterix): o Team Name o School o Your Contact Name o Your Email Address o School Telephone Number

Please note that you are NOT required to complete the “team members”, “monitoring” or “photographic policy” section of the booking form.

To book an event, festival or competition All events (family, SSP, County competition, leagues, meetings, and training) for the partnership will be available to view and book online in 2013/14. Details of courses outside the partnership will also be placed on the events calendar. To view the events, select the events tab from the top menu. Scroll to the month you wish to view which will show all events on that month.

The events calendar can also be printed by selecting ‘download the complete schedule’. To view further information on a particular event, select the event and a new tab will appear.

On submitting the booking you will:-

Receive an email confirming that you / your school / or someone from your school has secured a place

7 days before the event you will receive a reminder that you / your school / or someone from your school has booked to attend this event

Confirmation of your booking will also be emailed to the event organiser.

Photography and Video Policy

The Chesterfield School Sport Partnership has introduced a new system for safeguarding

children in relation to photography and video footage.

Each school will be provided with 10 red rubber wristbands.

For any event (leadership / festivals / competitions), nobody is permitted to take

photographs or video footage except the official School Sport Partnership

photographer. The policy will be announced at the beginning of each event. Where an

official photographer is present, photographs will be uploaded to the School Sport

Partnership website (www.chesterfieldssp.co.uk) for viewing (and download) by schools.

Any pupils that do not have consent for photography or video (for publication in print or

web promotional materials) should be given a red band to wear for the duration of the

event.

At the beginning of each event, school staff should inform the event staff which children are

wearing red bands.

Schools should retain their stock of red bands for on-going use (although we will ensure

that we hold a small number at each event in case they are required).

This policy has been agreed with Derbyshire County Council. The same policy will also be

employed at County School Games events across Derbyshire. Any questions relating to

They may compete in a maximum of two track and two field events, drawn from the following: On the track 1 + 1 Lap Relay, 2 + 2 Lap Relay, 6 Lap Paarlauf (1 + 1 Lap Hurdles Relay year 3/4) each requiring two boys & two girls. Obstacle Relay, Over / Under Relay, 4 x 1 Lap Relay each requiring four boys & four girls. … and in the field Chest Push, Soft Javelin, Speed Bounce, Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump, Vertical Jump. Basic Overview Event Format The Aviva Sportshall Primary Programme provides an exciting and highly popular introduction to athletics competition. Providing competition for smaller / rural schools allows far more children to access the Sportshall Pathway and develop vital skills. Team Information School teams should consist of a minimum of 4 boys and 4 girls, with a maximum of 6 boys and 6 girls being permitted. All races will be mixed gender. They may compete in a maximum of two track and two field events, drawn from the following: On the track 1 + 1 Lap Relay, 2 + 2 Lap Relay, each requiring one boy and one girl. Basic Overview A network of points (controls) are planned across a mapped site (such as school playing field) or you can use a local park/permanent orienteering course (POC) if convenient. Teams start and finish at the same place. It is important that the start area gives the opportunity to go to various controls (so teams disperse). Minimum of one map per team, ideally each person should have a copy of the course map. Teams have one card on which they mark/punch to show they have visited a control. The aim is for teams to visit as many of the controls marked on the map as they can in a set time (recommended 20 mins for Years 5/6). Teams start at the same time (mass start). If a very small site it may be appropriate to stagger teams at intervals but this requires more timekeepers and teams still have a set time to finish. Controls can be visited in any order. Start the competition with a whistle/klaxon and sound this again with two minutes left to warn teams to return. Point penalties can be given for a late return. The team that visits the most controls in the given time wins. If teams do get all the controls then the quickest time back wins

Basic Overview Event Format Quadkids is an exciting athletics concept designed to give more children the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the core disciplines of athletics. It is a team based quadrathlon competition where individual performances are scored using a points table and the winners are the team with highest cumulative points score. Team Information Four or five boys and four or five girls compete as a team with the scores of the top four boys and top four girls over the four events added together to give the team score. Cross Country - Primary

Basic Overview Event Format Cross Country events introduce the pupils to a higher level of competition, with the large number of participants promotes participation of a wide range of abilities. The event will offer separate races for year 4 boys and girls, year 5 boys and girls and year 6 boys and girls. In addition to individual places pupils will compete for their school team in each year group. Team Information Schools can enter teams of any size with a minimum of 4 boys and 4 girls, however only the top 6 from each school will score points for the team. Additional Information The route will be predominately grass, with some crossing of tracks. (Suitable for spikes). There will be plenty of Marshals, all of whom shall be easily identifiable. The route shall be marked by way of fencing pins and red/white tape and by way markers. Further information and entry forms will be sent to schools early in September.

Basic Overview Event Format After a warm up we will start with a series of ‘Olympic themed relay’ races and eventually move to the main events of the afternoon in the form of 2 short cross country races (separate race for girls and boys) with the first 4 runners from each team to count. The course is approximately 900m.There will be prizes for the first three individuals in each race and team certificates. All the running will be on grass so please make sure that the children have suitable footwear for this. It would also be helpful if teams could arrive changed and ready to run although some changing space will be available. Team Information Each cluster of schools can provide a team of 10 runners from Y3 – 5 boys and 5 girls. All 10 runners will be involved throughout.

Basic Overview Event Format Infant Agility Infant Agility is the latest addition to the Sportshall series of programmes, offering a great introduction to the concept and supporting young people in the challenge to learn skills, get fit and love sport. The Infant Agility programme focuses on the development of core skills whilst also providing an exciting Festival format. Programme Overview Infant Agility was developed in response to the growing demand for Sportshall activities for the younger age group. The programme incorporates twelve activities:

Competition Information Game duration time can be adjusted to suit the number of games and facility. Either team may substitute a player whenever the ball is out of play. At a change of possession e.g. foul, basket, ball out of play, play should restart from the nearest side/end line or the top of the arc if playing half court. Any player persistently fouling may be removed from the game by the referee. In the event of a foul the opposing team will receive the ball on the nearest side/end line. Basic Overview Event Format Red side always starts the first end by propelling the jack into court. The captain chooses the player on their side to play the jack. The jack ball must cross the ‘V’ line to be in play. The player who propels the jack ball also plays their team’s first coloured ball. A player from the opposing side then propels their first coloured ball. The side not closest to the jack must play until they either manage to get closer to the jack, or run out of balls. The side with remaining balls then propels them. The end is completed when all balls from both sides have been played. The end is scored by awarding one point for every ball of the same colour closer to the jack than the nearest opposing coloured ball. Second End Blue side then starts the second end. After both ends have been completed the winning side is the team with the higher accumulative score from both ends

Basic Overview Event Format The event is being organised by the Derbyshire SEN PE and School Sport Association in Partnership with British Gymnastics as part of the Competition Plus programme. The event will be led by coaches from Alfreton Gymnastics Club and Erewash Valley Gymnastics club. Information on inclusive gymnastic sessions at community clubs will be available on the day. The Gymnastics Plus event will on the Inclusive Key Steps programme and will focus on 3 areas: Floor, vault and body management. The event will be split into 2 sessions: Morning Session: Coaching and fun activity/skills session led by club coaches Afternoon Session: Participants will be given the chance to show some of the skills/displays they have learnt in the morning session. Event Format Tennis is fun, great for fitness and for developing hand eye co-ordination. It can be played by all ages and abilities and this is a mixed boys and girls competition. Competition Information 4 pupils from Year 3 and/or Year 4 will form the team, which include 2 boys and 2 girls. The order of play will include Seed 1 boy v Seed 1 boy, Seed 2 boy v Seed 2 boy, Seed 1 Girl v Seed 1 Girl and Seed 2 Girl v Seed 2 Girl in each match. A doubles game and/or reverse singles games may also be included. Mini Tennis Red uses badminton sized courts, 23” Mini Tennis rackets, Mini Tennis sponge balls if played indoors, or Mini Tennis red felt balls if played outdoors. A timed format will be used for matches. The serve is decided by a ‘toss’ at the start of the match. The nominated person serves for the first point; it then alternates every two points. When serving, players should stand behind the baseline and the ball must not be bounced before being hit. The serve can be hit over or underarm and should be hit diagonally, landing in the diagonally opposite service box. The sportsability festival will help engage young disabled people in physical education and school sport, and support their first step into School Games activity. The young people will be put into small groups where they will be able to take part in 5 different activities during the morning, including: boccia games and skills, table cricket, polybat, floor lacrosse, T.ball and parachute activities Activities will be supported in these activities by young leaders from across the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership as well as their own school staff. Staff will also have the opportunity to learn new skills in different activities to introduce into their own schools and where to gain further training and resources. The sportsability festival will link to new training and resources being launched this year. Training will be provided via afternoon or twilight workshops. Basic Overview Event Format Quicksticks is a 4 a side game, designed especially for 7-11 year olds. It can be played on any surface, and uses a larger, lighter and safer ball. Quicksticks is fun, safe and exciting and has been designed so that anyone can deliver the game regardless of previous experience. Brief Rules The key headings below offer a quick summary: No Goalkeepers - Quicksticks does not include goalkeepers making it safe, accessible, cost and time effective. Fewer Players - Quicksticks is played 4-a-side offering all players full involvement and increased playing time. Fewer Stoppages - Many rules from full 11-a-side hockey have been taken out or simplified to make Quicksticks easier to deliver and play. This also results in fewer stoppages meaning more playing time. Competition Information Small group round robins (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a defeat). Basic Overview Rounders is a popular team game that can be played just for fun or very competitively. It develops a range of technical and team skills, and is very inclusive.

You will have one good ball bowled to you. (a bowler will be provided in the Partnership finals)

You cannot have two batters at a Post. The umpire will ask the first to run on when second one makes contact.

In each match, all players will play 2 singles games. Depending on time and the number of entries, each game will run to 11 points and be the best of 3 games. Basic Overview Event Format Tennis is fun, great for fitness and for developing hand eye co-ordination. It can be played by all ages and abilities and this is a mixed boys and girl’s competition. Competition Information 4 pupils from Year 3 and/or Year 4 will form the team, which include 2 boys and 2 girls. The order of play will include Seed 1 boy v Seed 1 boy, Seed 2 boy v Seed 2 boy, Seed 1 Girl v Seed 1 Girl and Seed 2 Girl v Seed 2 Girl in each match. A doubles game and/or reverse singles games may also be included. Mini Tennis Red uses badminton sized courts, 23” Mini Tennis rackets, Mini Tennis sponge balls if played indoors, or Mini Tennis red felt balls if played outdoors. A timed format will be used for matches. The serve is decided by a ‘toss’ at the start of the match. The nominated person serves for the first point; it then alternates every two points. When serving, players should stand behind the baseline and the ball must not be bounced before being hit. The serve can be hit over or underarm and should be hit diagonally, landing in the diagonally opposite service box.
