Construction almost complete for new Southern Maryland Autonomous Research and Technology (SMART) Building
This $86 million, 84,000-square foot academic and research facility, slated to open in October 2021, will be transformative for USMSM and for the broader Southern Maryland region.
Report Recommendation: Branding

• Whether arriving at the Innovation District or only passing by, the Innovation District should be easily recognizable.
• To reinforce the identity, promote branding and advertising, and improve navigation, a comprehensive signage and wayfinding strategy should be developed for the Innovation District.
Branding Process
• Review of background information including the Master Plan document.
• Extensive tour of the Airport Innovation District including discussions with business owners, educators, investors, and airport representatives.
• Roundtable meetings with stakeholders including tourism and marketing experts, economic development officials, property and business owners, and county staff.
• Meeting with the Airport Advisory Board.
• Briefing and debriefing of the Steering Committee comprised of representatives from all groups above.
