Teamed up with USI Gamma Phi Beta to create the first annual Amber Gosch Memorial

Scholarship event.

o Event was in memory of a former CSC student who died shortly after graduation,

featuring two of her favorite things (dancing and tacos). The event raised $1,000 for

the scholarship fund.

Please consider the accomplishments of the University of Southern IndianaCommunication Studies Connection in your process to choose the recipient of the NCA StudentClub National Award. The Communication Studies Connection, now with 29 members, hasachieved success in administration, professional development, fundraising, service, and socialfunction.

This past April the club was recognized by the University as Program of the year for theirCareers in Communication event. Club member Machiko Takayama earned the USI PeaceAmbassador award from international programs for her work with the Communication StudiesConnection and for her involvement with the organization and presenting research at the SouthernStates Communication Association conference.

Professional development was highlighted by the clubs presentation of UnderstandingConferences which was attended by 7 students. Nine students also benefitted from a workshop onrsum building presented by a member of the university Human Resource Department. Theclubs 3rd Annual Careers in Communication Event was a major success. Thirty-six attendedpresentations from 3 Communication Studies alumni from the healthcare industry and from sales.Attendance was up markedly from last years event. It is also worth of mention that in this pastyear two CSC members were chosen to present their research at the annual meeting of theSouthern States Communication Association.

The Communication Studies Connection had two fundraising events. One event with alocal business brought in $160 for the club. The CSC also partnered with USI Gamma Phi Beta tocreate the first annual Amber Gosch Memorial Scholarship event which raised $900 for thescholarship fund. (The event was in memory of a former CSC student who died shortly aftergraduating).

Service activities involved the donation of 16 bags of food to the Tri-State Food Bankwhere 6 club members worked as volunteers. Four club members volunteered to work as ringersfor the Salvation Army during the past holiday season.

The CSC social event of the year was an end-of-semester party which was attended by 14persons.

Again in 2011-2012, The Communication Studies Connection had an active and productiveyear on our campus and in the community. I believe they are deserving of recognition for theiroutstanding efforts. Please contact me if you require further information.

To the NCASC Advisory Board,

During the 2011-2012 school year the Communication Studies Connection continued to

grow as an organization. Even though, as with all academic organizations, many of our members

graduated and moved on, CSC was still able to grow to the largest active membership yet with 29

members. Communication Studies Connection continued to strive towards advancing

communication as a discipline, building and strengthening relationships among organizations on

campus and within the community. In the wake of receiving the National Chapter of the Year

Award for the second year in a row, as well as receiving USIs Program of the Year award for

Careers in Communication event, the organization set out to not only meet but to exceed any and

all expectations once again. With each of the four committees (professional development,

fundraising, social, and service) working towards that common purpose, our chapter of

Communications Studies Connection was able to do so.

The professional development committee designed and arranged two workshops that were

very successful. The first was a workshop called Understanding Conferences which was

attended by seven students. The focus of the workshop was to answer any questions that students

had about attending conferences and to explain the various elements of conferences around the

nation. What went into a successful conference presentation, the steps for submitting proposals and

papers to conferences, even things such as travel and time management were all covered in this

workshop. The workshop helped to prepare our students for anything that they may encounter as

they travel to the different conferences available, as we hope that they continue to attend, present,

and show the quality of work that we expect from our program and our best and brightest at said

conferences. The professional development committee also hosted the third annual Careers in

Communication event. This event brought three communication alumni from the community to

share their experiences and advice with current Communication Studies Connection members and

other students and faculty attendees. Bringing in professionals from health care (St. Marys and

Visiting Nurse Association) academia (University of Southern Indiana) and sales (Dell) fields, the

event was an amazing success. Careers in Communication not only provided students with an idea

as to what to expect once they graduate, but also what they should be looking into and doing

before they graduate and also how important some things can be even after graduating. It provided

attendees with an opportunity to learn from alumni who had graduated only a few years prior and

allowed the alumni to share their personal accounts and advice to students in the very program

which had produced them. As already stated, the event won USIs Program of the Year award

and was a rousing success that we look to continue for years to come.

The fundraising committee continued to work exceptionally hard and managed to continue

our longstanding partnership with Spudz N Stuff while joining with USIs Gamma Phi Beta

sorority to create the first annual Amber Gosch Memorial Scholarship Dance Event. The event,

which was in memory of a former CSC student who passed away shortly after graduation, featured

two of her favorite things (dancing and tacos). The event raised $900 for the scholarship fund and

allowed our two organizations to work together and create both an extremely successful event in

honor of Amber and a partnership between the two organizations that will continue on for years to

come. Through these partnerships and the amazing ability of our members to exceed expectations,

the fundraising committee had an astoundingly successful year financially, professionally, and

personally.

The social committee, in addition to hosting an end-of-semester party where students were

allowed to focus on enjoying themselves, continued to do great things. In addition to simply

providing enjoying activities to members, the committee also worked to make Communication

Studies Connection more visible on campus and to bolster recruitment both in and outside of the

major. By attending events and representing CSC in a professional manor and showing the benefits

and advantages of being a member of CSC, the social committee was able to increase CSCs

presence both on and off campus. In addition, the social committee was able to successfully

incorporate social media sites in order to facilitate communication between members. Starting next

year, CSC will be using OrgSync , which allows users to contact members, various committees, or

to the whole organization and stay organized. The social committee pioneered the new tools and

the training that members will receive in the future. All of this is exceptionally important to CSC

as it allows the organization to grow and use all available tools to continue to move forward. The

social committees efforts ensure that membership will increase in both quantity and quality.

The service committee provided different programs that encouraged personal growth,

addressed the needs of the community, and complimented students academic experience through

servitude to the community and other students. The committee organized one successful product

drive by donating sixteen bags of food to the Tri-State Food Bank, which members also

volunteered at. Service committee also had students volunteer as ringers for the Salvation Army.

These events allowed the members to give back something to the community and showed them the

importance of supporting local aid organizations. These events also allowed our chapter to

continue our established working relationship with those organizations. The service committee also

worked with the fundraising committee to continue the Amber Gosch Scholarship, which has

become a tradition.

Communication Studies Connection has had an amazing year. Old partnerships were

strengthened, new partnerships were formed, membership is at an all-time high, members are

becoming more and more active both on campus and in our community and the organization

continues to grow into something wonderful. Every member, from the officers to the newest

recruits, contributed to the success that CSC had this year and will continue to have for years to

come. CSC will continue to grow through our members in both depth and breadth and we will

continue to meet and exceed any and all expectations.
