Join us in San Francisco for a stimulating and rewarding educational experience that will advance your understanding of addiction medicine and improve your clinical practice. Whether you are preparing for the American Board of Addiction Medicine Certification Exam, refreshing your knowledge of the field, or newly learning about the diagnosis and treatment of addictions, this course has something to offer.CSAM is honored to have one of the central figures in addiction research with us to kick off the conference. Since the publication of The Natural History of Alcoholism in 1983, George Vaillant, MD, has been on the front lines of addiction treatment. He will give us a review and update on more than 30 years of longitudinal studies on alcoholism and drug abuse.

In addition, the conference includes a roster of the preeminent leaders in the field of addiction research and treatment. Speakers include Francis Vocci, PhD, who will present on receptor pharmacology and medical management of addictions, George Koob, PhD, on neurobiology, Marc Fishman, MD, on special needs of the adolescent population, Neal Benowitz, MD, on nicotine, Stephanie Brown, PhD, on a clinician guide to the 12-steps, Scott Fishman, MD, on pain and safe prescribing practices, and Thomas Kosten, MD, on stimulant pharmacology and treatment.

For those who are preparing for the American Board of Addiction Medicine Certification Exam, we have expanded the special exam track to help individuals prepare for the exam, including a study guide, both pre-conference and post-conference web-based assessment and study, and 6 hours of exam preparation during the conference focused on sample questions and identifying high value material.

CSAM conferences are designed to enhance physician interaction and collegiality. Small group discussion of cases will complement the didactic lectures and provide an experiential learning format. A Friday evening dinner, with a San Francisco theme, will allow for a chance to relax, meet and enjoy the company of others. At the dessert reception on Thursday evening, Gabor Maté, MD, author of the best-selling In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction will discuss “Taming the Hungry Ghost: Combining Science and Compassion in the Treatment of Addiction.”

There will be a variety of pre-conference workshops on Wednesday, September 5 to deepen your understanding of several challenging clinical topics.

Addiction Medicine review Course The 3-day Review Course presents an overview of the core elements of addiction medicine, presented by top experts in the field. It can serve as a broad review for clinicians, a review of the basics for newcomers, or a starting point for self-assessment and study for those planning to sit for the American Board of Addiction Medicine exam. Since it is not designed exclusively for test preparation some material not likely to be on the test will be included in plenary sessions as part of providing the foundation for informed clinical practice. Participants sit at tables with a facilitator to guide case discussions and answer questions. Participants receive a course syllabus with copies of all lecture handouts and selected articles as well as access to online video of all lectures.

American Board of Addiction Medicine Certification Exam Preparation Track (additional fee)In addition to the three-day Review Course, CSAM also offers an ABAM Certification Exam Preparation Track. In July, Exam Track participants will receive a CD-ROM study guide with sample questions and other study material. Prior to the conference, those taking the Exam Preparation Track will take a pre-conference assessment test online to help identify areas where additional study may be needed (1 hour CME). The Exam Preparation Track at the conference consists of 6 additional CME hours devoted to test-taking strategies, sample questions, high-yield exam content, and tips on how to prepare for the exam. After the conference, participants will have access to video of all conference presentations and a minimum of two post- conference webinars (2 hours CME) as well as a post-conference practice exam (1 hour CME). Those taking the certification exam preparation track must also sign-up for the Review Course.
