VENT SIZING TABLES \FOR

CATEGORY 1NATURAL GAS AND PROPANE APPLIANCES

PREFACE

These tables were developed to provide a convenient method ofdetermining vent sizes for venting natural draft and fan-assistedCategory I appliances. Additionally, the tables provide the vent sizesthat apply to spil lage-susceptible appliances: (1) Natural draftappliances in either tight structures, as defined in Clause 7.2.7 of theCAN,/CGA-B149.1-M91 and CAN,/CGA-B149.2-M91 Installation Codes,or (2) Structures where the mechanically ventilation is designed for nomore than 5 Pascals (0.02 inches w.c.) depressurization. The valuesapplicable to spil lage-susceptible appliances are l isted in the Dp(depressurization) column, and are based upon building depressurizationof 5 Pascals (0.02 inches w.c.). The Dp column "u..oi b" used formechanically-ventilated systems that allow more than 5 padepressurization nor can spillage-susceptible appliances be installed inthis type of environment.

Currently the installation codes do not provide vent sizing for Category Ifan-assisted appliances and for spillage-susceptible appliances underdepressurization. These tables address this deficiency in the Codes.Values under the DP column applies only installations containingdrafthood-equipped appliance(s), or combinations of Category I fan_assisted appliance(s) and drafthood-equipped appliance(s). These tablesalso provide vent sizes for multiple vented appliances into a commonvent, and vent sizes for tile{ined masonry chimneys.

The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) and the Installation CodeCommittee thankfully acknowledge the research conducted by theCanadian Gas Research Institute (CGRI), and the independent researchsponsored by the Gas Research Institute to generate tirese tables. Theresearch_was conducted using a computer program VENT_II developedby Batelle. Recognition is given to both research organizations forallowing CCA to publish these tables.

For vent sizing requirements not contemplated by these tables, pleaserefer to the applicable installation codes.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Category I Appliance - An appliance which operates with a non-positivevent static pressure and with a flue loss not less than 17 per cent.(Note: This category consists of drafthood-equipped appliances,

appliances labelled as Category I, and fan-assisted appliances foraenting into Type B aents.)

Category II Appliance - An appliance which operates with a non-

positive vent static pressure and with a flue loss less than 17 per cent.

Category III Appliance - An appliance which operates with a positivevent static pressure and with aflue loss not less than 17 Per cent.

Category IV Appliance - An appliance which operates with a positivevent static pressure and with a flue loss less than 17 Per cent.

DP - Refers to the maximum appliance input rating of a Category I

appliance equipped with a draft hood that could be attached to the vent,

when the appliance is located in a structure that may experiencesustained depressurization of up to 5 Pa. (0.02 inches w.c.); for example:

a tight structure, with a mechanically-ventilated structure.

Fan Assisted Conbustion System - An appliance equipped with anintegral mechanical means to either draw or force products of

combustion through the combustion chamber and/or heat exchanger.

FAN Min - refers to the minimum appliance inPut rating of a Category I

appliance with a fan-assisted combustion system that could be attached

to the vent.FAN Max - refers to the maximum appliance inPut rating of a CategoryI appliance with a fan-assisted combustion system that could be attached

to the vent.

GENERAL VENTING REQUIREMENTS

All requirements contained in this document apply to both Categorv Idrafthood-equipped and Category I fan-assisted combustion appliances.At no time should a venting system for a l isted Category II, III, or IVappliance be sized with these Tables. The alternate sizinq methodsdescribed in the B149-M91 Codes may also be used to size the ventingsystem for a drafthood-equipped appliance. At this time, alternate siztnqmethods have not been developed for fan-assisted appliances, therefore,until engineering data is developed to allow alternate sizing methods forCategory I fan-assisted appliances, these vent tables shall be used.

1. The venting tables included in this instruction applv to vents andchimneys internal to the structure below the ,ooi i in". Exteriorchimneys or vents not enclosed by the structure or a chase belou. theroof l ine may experience continuous condensation, depending onlocality. A chimney with one or more sides exposed to the outside ofthe structure is considered to be an exterior chimney. A Tvpe B, orcertified chimney lining system passing through an unused masonrvchimney flue, is not considered to be exposed to the outdoors.

The "DP" column shall be used to determine the capacitv of a

venting system within a building constructed in accordance r\.ith thatdescribed in Clause 7.2.1.

2. If the vent or vent connector size, determined from the tables. issmaller than the appliance draft hood outlet or f lue collar. thesmaller size may be used, provided:

(a) the total vent height (H) is at least 10 feet;

(b) vents or vent connectors for appliance draft hood outlet' � i or i lur,collars 12 inches in diameter or smaller, are not reducetl nrorethan one tab le s ize (e .g .12 inches to 10 inches is a r rne_: rzereduction);

(e) the draft hood outlet is greater than 4 inches in diameter. Donot connect a 3-inch diameter vent or vent connector to a 4-inchdiameter draft hood outlet. This provision does not apply tofan-assisted appliances.

For a single appliance venting configuration with zero laterallengths, note that Tables 1 and 2 are assumed to have no elbows inthe vent system. For all other vent configurations, the vent systemis assumed to have two (2) 90-degree elbows. For each addition 90-degree elbow, or equivalentn beyond two, the maximum capacitylisted in the venting table should be reduced by 10 per cent (0.90 xmaximum listed capacity) for a natural draft appliance, and 15 percent for a fan-assisted appliances.

* Two (2) 4S-degree elbows are equivalent to one (1) 90-degreeelbow.

If vent connectors are combined prior to entering the common vent,the maximum common vent capacity listed in the common ventingtables must be reduced by 10 per cent, the equivalent of one (1) 90-degree elbow (0.90 x maximum common vent capacity). (See Figure5). The horizontal length of the common vent connector manifold(L) should not exceed 1-"1/2 feet (18 inches) for each inch of commonvent connector manifold diameter.

If the common vertical vent is offset as shown in Figure 6, themaximum common vent capacity listed in the common venting tablesshould be reduced by 20 per cent; the equivalent of two (2) 90-degreeelbows (0.80 x maximum common vent capacity). The horizontallength of the offset shall not exceed 1-1,/2 feet for each inch ofcommon vent diameter.

Use sea level input rating when determining maximum capacity forhigh altitude installation. Use actual input rating for determiningminimum capacity for high altitude installation.

For appliances with modulating input rates, the minimum vent orvent connector (Fan Min) capacity (determined from the tables) shallbe less than the lowest appliance input rating and the maxrmumvent or vent connector (Fan or Nat Max.) capacity (determined

from the tables) shall be greater than the highest appliance inputrating.

A fan-assisted furnace may be common vented into an existingmasonry chimney, provided:

(a) the chimney is currently serving at least one drafthood-equippedappliance; and

O) the vent connectors and chimnev are sized in accordance withTables 7 and 8.

Single appliance venting of a fan-assisted furnace into a tilelinedmasonry chimney is prohibited. The chimney must first be lined witheither Type B Vent, sized in accordance with Tables 1 or 2, or acertified lining system.

Certif ied, corrugated metall ic chimney liner systems in masonrychimneys shall be sized by using Tables 1 or 2 for dedicated ventingand Tables 3 or 4 for common venting with the maximum capacityreduced by 20 per cent (0.80 x maximum capacity) and the minimumcapacity as shown in the applicable table. Corrugated metal ventsystems insialled with bends or offsets require additional reductionof the vent maximum capacity (See Note 5).

For muitiple units of gas utilization equipment all located on onefloor, available total height (H) is measured from the highest drafthood outlet or flue collar up to the level of the cap or terminal. Vent

connector Rise (R) is measured from the draft hood outlet or fluecollar to the level where the vent gas streams come together. (Not

applicable to multi-storey).

For multi-storey installations, available total height for each seg-ment of the system (H) is the vertical distance betneen the highest

draft hood outlet or flue collar entering that segment, and the centreline of the next higher interconnection tee. (See Figure 11)

The size of the lowest vent connector, and of the vertical ventleading to the lowest interconnection of a multi-storev svstem, mustbe in accordance with Table

-l or 2, lor available total height (H) up

to the lowest interconnection. (See Figure 12).

If the desired vent height and vent connector rise and/or lateral arebetween the table entries, l inear interpolation is permitted forcalculation of the permissible appliance input ratings. Extrapolationbeyond the table entries is not acceptable.

When vent table permits more than one diameter of pipe to be usedfor a vent connector or vent, the smallest permitted diameter ispreferred.

aent one or more gas-fuelled space heatingappliances with combined inputs of 400 000 Btuh(120 kW) or less, shall be lined in accordance with

7.12.10, except where

(a) the flue has an existing clay-tile or transiteliner;

(i) which is capable of removing the total

volume of fre gases to the outdoors, and

(ii) the capacity of the liner as determined by

the use of either Table 5, 6, Z, or 8 doesnot exceed the to ta l inpu t o f the

appliances to be connected thereto by

more than 25 per cent, and

(ii i) the existing l iner is inspected and

accepted by an installer under 7.72.2; or

(b) it is exempted by the authority haaing

iurIsdiction.
