CS20 Research Mini Projects  You will be responsible for doing any 5 of the following mini‐research projects.  Each project is worth 5 marks.   You may hand in the projects at any time you wish.  The latest date to hand in the projects is Mon May 1st.  For each project, I have included questions to help you with your research.  Each project should be about a half page double spaced in total to a maximum of one page.  You should, at the very least, answer the questions listed in the project. NOTE:  Everyone MUST do Project #1 (Binary Numbers).  Project #1  (Everyone must do this topic!) Topic:  Binary Numbers What are they? How do you convert from the decimal number system to the binary number system? (Do an example of how to convert a number.   Ex.  8 = 1000 in binary    How do you get that??) + How to convert larger numbers like 140 to binary! What are hexadecimal numbers? Why are binary numbers important in the world of computers? An example of how binary numbers can be added together.   Project #2 Topic:  Hard Drives What kind of hard drives are there? Compare and Contrast SSD to HDD. Include the benefits of one type over another. What type do most modern day phones use?   Project #3 Topic:  Motherboard What is it and what is its main purpose? What is on it? Include at least 3 different parts you would find on the motherboard. What is clockspeed? What is the heat sink?   Project #4 Topic: Memory What are types of memory and what are they used for? Explain how bits relate to memory. What is RAM’s purpose? Is RAM permanent storage? Explain.  What type of memory is used for permanent storage?

Project #5 Topic:  Servers What is the purpose of a server? What is a network? What is a domain controller? What is active directory?   Project #6 Topic:  Operating Systems Talk about the history of Operating Systems. What are some of the operating systems used today? State some of the main differences between some of the current operating systems used today.   Project #7 Topic:  Programming Languages Other than Visual Basic, find 3 programming languages used today. What are these programming languages used for today?  (Give examples) Compare some of the concepts learned in VB with these languages.  For example, what does an IF Then look like in the other languages? What programming language is used in phones, in IPADS, in popular games you know?  Project #8 Topic:  Quantum Computer What is it? What are the main differences between a regular computer and a quantum computer? Are they real right now?  Can you go out and buy one?   Project #9 Topic:  Your Choice (Must be approved by Mr. Kerbrat)  Only one of the projects may be “Your Choice”.  All others must be from the given list.
