Dear graduates and friends of Malden Catholic High School,

Welcome to summer! Most of us are breathing a sigh of relief that our cold and snowy winter is finally over. Spring brought us the Prom, Senior Awards Banquet, Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement for the newest class of Malden Catholic alumni, the Class of 2011. The same May weekend, we welcomed the Golden Reunion Class of 1961 back home to Malden Catholic. The cycle of blue and gold life continues!

Things have been busy since the last edition of Crystal Hi-Lites. The week of Janu-ary 30-February 5, we joined the 7,000 Catholic schools nationwide to highlight the major positive impact that Catholic schools have on our nation by celebrating “Catholic Schools Week.” The theme for this year is “A+ for America – Catholic Schools.” No surprise for us.

Throughout these months our seniors were preparing to bring their MC educational experiences, inside and outside the classrooms, into the wider world. 98% of them will enroll in universities and colleges and 2% will join the military or the workforce. Once again, our teachers, counselors and coaches have prepared our students well for cam-puses, offices and other places where their impact will matter. (A list of college accep-tances appears in this issue of Crystal Hi-Lites.)

in January, MC junior Timothy DeMaria was named an honoree of the Chinese Cultural Connection as the Best Youth Volunteer Role model. later in the winter, senior Rudy Fa-vard was featured in the Boston Globe, on local TV and on ABC World News for his work with a local family and their disabled son. On March 31, Rudy was the student speaker at the 21st Annual inner-City Scholarship Dinner held at the Boston Marriott Copley Place by the Catholic Schools Foundation. During the last week of February, seven MC students represented Malden Catholic at the annual Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools junior retreat in West Hartford, Connecticut. This retreat brings upperclassmen from all thirteen Xaverian Brothers’ schools together for a week of prayer, service and fraternity.

in February, alumni gathered in the Brother Gilbert Center to celebrate the lancers’ hockey victory over Boston College High School. A larger and even more enthusiastic group of students, alumni, faculty and friends of Malden Catholic followed the Super Eight Hockey Tournament games. When junior Brendan Collier from Charlestown made the winning goal in overtime play against St. John’s Prep on March 20, the 4-3 final score made all of us so proud to acknowledge that “We are M.C.!”

On April 2, we enjoyed gathering for the Celebration for Malden Catholic. This signature event allows us to renew and revitalize our relationships as members of the Malden Catholic Family. This year’s dinner allowed us to present lifetime Achievement Awards to three members of the Higgins Family of Melrose: John ’57, Richard ’59 and Robert ’64. More than $350,000 was raised.

On June 15, we were able to enjoy annual Golden Plus Reunion, for graduates of MC and Girls Catholic in the years before 1961. it is always a pleasure to reconnect with one another, share some stories about Highland Avenue and Charles Street, and have a luncheon in a setting somewhat fancier than the original places where we enjoyed the brown bag lunches our parents prepared ”back then.” The spirit of the conversations seems to be the same as it always has been!

As always, graduation time has been an opportunity for us to reflect on our identity and to consider how we have been measuring up to the nearly eighty year tradition of Xave-rian Brothers’ secondary education for young men. Over the years, the Brothers and our dedicated lay faculty and staff members provide our students with unique examples of how one may “fall in love with the service of God,” as Xaverian Founder Theodore James Ryken did. Besides classroom and lab activities, liturgies and prayer services and service opportunities all promote the “A+ for America – Catholic Schools.”

Have a refreshing and enjoyable summer, everyone!

STEvEn HunnEwELL, 2002Just before this winter’s Christmas Vacation, several members of the Malden Catholic Family were given the privilege of a long-distance con-versation with an MC alumnus serving our country and the cause of peace in Afghanistan. Headmaster Mr. Ed-ward Tyrrell, Principal Brother Thomas Puccio, Director of Advance-ment Operations and Constituent Relations

Mrs. Jean Campbell, Assistant Director of Institutional Advancement Ms. Carolyn Rolfe, and Advancement Office Assistant Ms. Lisa Schlosberg joined six students to speak with 1st Lieutenant Stephen Hunnewell, MC Class of 2002. When a representative of the U. S. Army “Operation Trib-ute to Freedom” had contacted Mrs. Campbell to offer an opportunity for such a special event, she wasted no time accepting the proposal and arranging for it.

A recipient of two Bronze Star Medals, 1st Lieutenant Hunnewell is the son of Janet Profirio of Woburn and since 2009 the husband of Libbey Hunnewell. This January, Mrs. Hunnewell joined the ranks of military wives giving birth (to a son) in the United States while their husbands are serving America overseas. After graduating from Malden Catholic in 2002, Steve joined ROTC as a college freshman. He began his military career as an enlisted airborne ranger, became a U. S. Army Special Forces weapons sergeant, and then an infantry officer working with NATO allies to train, equip and advise the Afghan National Security Forces. He is now a Civil Affairs Team Leader responsible for overseeing a three-soldier team whose primary objective is to advise local Afghan officials on the implementation of productive governance processes and to assist them in forming meaningful connections with the local population and ensuring that they are properly serving the citizens whom they represent.

On December 16, MC seniors Brian McKenna and Paul Kenny, sophomores Patrick Allen, Benjamin Hoang and Edward Kearnan, and freshman Robert Madden joined the MC adults in the Brother Gilbert Conference Room for a tele-phone conversation with 1st Lieutenant Hunnewell. A blown transformer earlier that day prevented a video connection for both Fox news and for the Malden Catholic audience. Al-though the thought of a conversation with a faceless Bronze Star Medal recipient could have intimidated the students, first student speaker Brian McKenna noted how quickly he felt comfortable talking with a fellow MC man.

Student comments on their conversations with 1st Lieuten-ant Hunnewell were unanimous in recognizing Steve’s attitude of service to the Afghan people. Patrick Allen observed that “he was passionate in his belief that his work with the local Afghan villagers was simply commu-nity service on a larger scale” and that Steve’s experience of Christian Service at MC prepared him for his tour in Afghanistan. Ted Kearnan found it interesting that Steve and his fellow soldiers often dine with the people in order to promote good connections between the soldiers who are trying to maintain peace and the citizens themselves.

All those involved in the conversation with lieutenant Hunnewell found that

the experience provided significant insights into the role of the United

States in Afghanistan.

Bobby Madden recalled Lieutenant Hunnewell’s advice that students become involved in sports in order to learn the life essentials of leadership and teamwork. He also noted the importance of seemingly small successes for Americans trying to help local families and to establish trust with the Afghan people. Steve’s Civil Affairs Team’s responsibility covers an area the size of the state of Rhode Island. It is one of the most dangerous military postings due to the Taliban’s efforts to hinder the Team’s effort to engage the local populace. The willingness of Lieutenant Hunnewell and his fellow soldiers to share themselves with the people and their daily lives demonstrates Ameri-ca’s desire to be in relationship with the Afghan people on a basic, human level.

“God, Family, Country” was the mantra that guided the Honorable Thomas H. Fallon ’60 through his personal and professional life until his death on August 16, 2010.

Judge Fallon was a man dedicated to his family and his faith, and to the Malden community he called home. He was the son of Malden Police Sergeant Henry Fallon and his wife Catherine, who was active in the Immaculate Conception Parish.

After graduating from Malden Catholic High School, Judge Fallon earned a degree from Boston College in 1964, and began teaching at Woburn High School. After teach-ing for a few years while attending law school nights, with some time in between serving as an Officer in the United States Army, he earned his law degree from Suffolk Law School in 1971, and opened a law office in his hometown of Malden. He served on numerous boards, committees and commissions, highlights of which included eight years on the Malden School Committee and four years as Mayor.

Judge Fallon was elected Mayor just as Proposition 2½ was taking effect and the City’s financial condition was in crisis. During his two terms as Mayor (1982-1986), Judge Fallon formulated innovative ways to rehire teachers, public safety and public works personnel. In those difficult times, he brought new businesses and development back to the City. He implemented socially progressive programs that still serve the Malden community today, including neighborhood crime watch programs, a Housing for the Homeless Program, and the Beautification Committee, which also serve as models for other cities.

He and Janice, his wife of forty-five years, raised eleven children. Because his children went to the Malden Public Schools, he believed that volunteering for the School Com-mittee was his way of giving back to the City of Malden. He was a champion for education.

Judge Fallon believed that faith and public service were intertwined and he worked to instill that sense of com-mitment to the community in his children. His daughter

Deborah serves as a Councilor-at-large for the Malden City Council. His daughter Kathryn, GC ’88, serves as the Mal-den City Solicitor. Daughter Christine, GC ’92, is a high school teacher. Three sons, Thomas ’86, Michael ’89, and Daniel, have all served in the military. All of his children, including sons, James ’87 and Matthew ’91, are active vol-unteers in their communities.

“As we achieve this momentous occasion of our anniversary, my

deepest thoughts are for our classmates who have died or who otherwise are unable to join us.”

Judge Fallon continued his life in public service, from 1994 until the time of his death, serving as a United States Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security Admin-istration. He was known for fairly and compassionately forming his decisions and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with people. In May of 2010, he celebrated his Golden Jubilee with his classmates from the MC Class of 1960 and joined the Class of 2010 for its special Baccalaureate Mass.

In his own words written to his friends in celebration of his silver jubilee at Boston College, he reflected: “Life has been filled with peaks and valleys. The peaks have been numerous and some have been very high. The valleys have been few, not too low, and most have been gener-ously sprinkled with daisies and lilacs. At all times I have been close to our Creator. As we achieve this momentous occasion of our anniversary, my deepest thoughts are for our classmates who have died or who otherwise are un-able to join us. My prayer is for the good health of all. I hope that your life has been filled with the same peace and happiness that I have been blessed with, and if it hasn’t been, that it will be.”

RuDY FAvARDThis story was originally printed in the Pilot on 1/28/11

Malden Catholic senior, Rudy Favard, recently generated national attention for his selfless act of kindness toward the Parker family of Melrose and their handicapped son. Rudy’s nightly service to the Parkers was chronicled on the front page of the Boston Globe, by CNN and by Diane Sawyer on ABC World News Tonight.

Rudy’s story began last September, when Malden Catholic school nurse Elizabeth Paquette was contacted by a local mom, Patty Parker, who was desperately in need of assistance. Patty had no previous connection to Malden Catholic, but the fam-ily’s pediatrician, Dr. Rhonda Fogle, thought Malden Catholic’s young men might be able to help.

Patty and her husband, Rick, have 8 year-old twin boys: Ben, who is a healthy, happy child, and Sam, who is neurologically devastated with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Sam is unable to sit up or hold up his head. On a September afternoon, Patty called Malden Catholic, overwhelmed and pleading for help, as Rick would no longer be able to carry Sam upstairs to bed each night due to his own serious health problem. Patty could not physically manage to carry Sam upstairs by herself, as he weighs about 75 lbs. She asked Nurse Paquette if there might be several boys who would volunteer to help carry her son upstairs to bed –it would all take about 10 minutes each night.

Nurse Paquette asked Rudy Favard, Captain of the Mal-den Catholic football team, and Kyle Amato, Captain of the

school’s Drama Club, if they could help. Both said yes – Rudy would be the primary student involved, and Kyle would be his back-up. On the evening of September 15th, the boys and the school nurse went to the Parker home.

According to Nurse Paquette, “We climbed the stairs at 23 Fair-mount Street and I looked up to see Patty Parker standing in the door, sobbing. She couldn’t stop thanking the boys-she told them she was rescued by them. Rick Parker told me that he felt like he was dropped into a big family who was there to save them.”

Nurse Paquette said, “My MC guys have loved and adopted the Parker Family. Rudy never leaves Patty and Rick without a hug goodnight. Patty says the boys are ‘her angels.’”

This simple act of human kindness – carrying a child upstairs every night to bed – generated a flurry of news coverage about Rudy Favard. In the midst of the excitement, this gentle young man from Malden remained his humble self. When asked by CNN news anchor Alina Cho why he would decide to help the Parker’s on a nightly basis, he responded, “Well, the way I was thinking about it, I thought why not, you know? It’s only by God’s grace that I’m still here and I’m able to do what I’m doing, so I might as well help out while I can.”

“By God’s Grace.” Truly this is a sign of Rudy’s character. What’s more, this attitude – a humble belief in our ability and responsibility to reach out to others – is truly a sign of Malden Catholic students. Rudy’s good work mirrors the Xaverian charism and goals of Malden Catholic as a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School. We are “a school community that articu-lates and lives the teachings of Jesus Christ . . .” (Calls, Goals, Criteria – XBSS). Simply put, we form young men of character who have an active passion for justice and peace. This, above all else, makes Malden Catholic students stand apart.

Malden Catholic students are encouraged to live the spiritual values of the Xaverian charism: humility, trust, zeal, compas-sion, and simplicity. Since 1932, these values have been taught and modeled by the Brothers who live and serve at Malden Catholic. The lesson is not lost on our young men today, as they strive to make the world a better place.

We thank GC Alumna Patricia Chisholm ’65 for her assistance reaching out to fellow GC grads. Patricia spent many mornings in the Advancement Office this spring, telephoning and emailing Girls Catholic graduates to catch up and encourage them to attend the Annual Gala.

There has always been a special relationship between Malden Catholic and Girls Catholic. In recent years, Malden Catholic has attempted to help the Girls Catholic Spirit and Tradition live on through the alumnae. In turn, alumnae have been financially sup-portive in continuing the Malden Catholic mission and tradition. We thank you for your support.

Congratulations to Timothy DeMaria ‘11, winner of the “Best Youth Volunteer Role Model” award given by the Chinese Culture Connection at its 6th Annual Gala on April 9. Timothy has been a volunteer at the center for several years. Tim has been learning Mandarin Chinese at Malden Catholic since his freshman year.

On December 3rd at the Mass for the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, Ms. Judith Imondi was presented the Theodore James Ryken Award. The Ryken Award is given annually to a faculty or staff member who “nurtures members of the community; is committed to academic excellence and to the recognition of the talents of individuals; recognizes the importance of educating the whole person; and strives to fulfill the Gospel call to peace and justice.” Ms. Imondi, throughout her twenty-five year career at Malden Catholic, has fully embodied each of these qualities.

Seven students represented Malden Catholic at the annual XBSS Junior Retreat in February. Juniors Rob Norton, Alex O’Donovan, Jimmy McCarron, Nick Medeiros, John Ronayne and Dan Fitzgerald joined Campus Minister Mrs. Mary Driscoll and senior Matt Cardarelli at the five-day retreat in West Hartford, CT.

Dominic Tringali ’14 recently performed in a concert at Boston’s Hard Rock Café to benefit the ALS Massachusetts Chapter and ALS Compassionate Care. Dominic, who plays both drums and saxophone, performs regularly at benefit concerts.

Christopher Dixon ’14 organized the contribution, collection and delivery of numerous toys, games and items for the patients at Shriners Hospital in Boston.

Four Malden Catholic student-athletes signed letters of intent with Division I colleges and universities. Tyler McVicar signed with Elon College of North Carolina, where he will play baseball. Paul Yanakopulos signed with UMass Amherst, where he will play baseball. Michael Vecchione is committed to the University of New Hampshire, where he will play hockey. William Guinee is committed to Dartmouth, where he will play football.

On March 3rd and 4th the Malden Catholic Arts Night featured a performance by the MC Rock Project, the MC Drama Club production of “Hemlock Jones,” and an exhibit of student artwork. “Hemlock Jones,” written by MC senior, Kyle Amato, is one-act play of comedy, mystery and puppets.

Theology teacher Mr. Patrick Driscoll recently joined twenty other laymen and women to become members of the first group of Xaverian Brother Associates. For a number of years, the Brothers had been considering ways in which to invite lay persons to enter into a special relationship with the Congregation. The Associates are “…men and women, single or married, who wish to share the charism of the Xaverian Brothers and are called by the Spirit of God to recognize this charism of love and service in themselves.” With the assistance of the Brothers, the Associates are exploring “ways to reach out to the poor and marginalized, each in their own environments and way of life.” On December 5, Brothers, Associates and their families gathered for Mass in Marriottsvile, Maryland, where

the Associates signed their one-year commitment papers and received a specially designed pin identifying them as lay members of the Xaverian Brothers community.

In August more than 20 students volunteered to clean and repair gravestones of deceased Xaverian Brothers at the Brothers’ cemetery in Danvers.

On November 28, the first Sunday of Advent, Cardinal O’Malley presented the 2010 Cheverus Award to 98 recipients, including Brother Bede Benn, C.F.X. This award is named for the city’s first bishop, Jean-Louis Anne Magdelaine Lefebvre de Cheverus and is given to those chosen for their service to the Church and God’s people. Most recipients are nominated by their area vicar and approved by their regional bishop and then Cardinal O’Malley, but in some cases recipients are personally selected by Cardinal O’Malley. Congratulations to Brother Bede for this wonderful accomplishment.

It was Asian New Year in February and the annual Asian New Year celebration was hosted by the international students of MC. These international students are an integral part of MC’s culture. The international program began here four years ago under the guidance of history teacher, Rick Mazzei. The program was experimental and was comprised of only nine boys. Because these students matriculated so well into our community, the program was expanded the following year to allow twenty students from across the globe to attend M.C. Ms. Lisa Cenca, Literacy Specialist, was also asked to direct the program at this time.

The current group of international students is from S. Korea, Vietnam, China and Spain. As the program continues to grow, we hope to invite students to study here from even more countries around the world. This cultural exchange brings so much to international students as well as our American students. This was so apparent in the Asian New Year celebration. Over 100 American

STUDENTS PITCH IN AT THE XAVERIAN BROTHERS GRAVE SITE

students, faculty and staff attended this event. The international students presented an array of food, music, dancing and art.

Ms. Cenca was overjoyed with the event and proudly explained that, “It’s always fun to see American students experiencing something new and exciting. But, what is really beautiful is the way the boys interact. The American students are genuinely interested in learning about the international students’ culture. The international students are tremendously proud of their cultures and they put in a lot of work to get this off the ground. These international kids are really very special. I feel so blessed to be part of their lives. They bring so much to the school.” Ms. Cenca meets with students weekly for instruction in Spoken English and American Culture. The group, in addition to planning cultural events for the school, attends field trips that help them feel more acclimated to American culture outside the school community as well.

This year eleven international students graduate as men. These are: Leon An, Jason Song, Hong Cho, Hong Hwan Choi, Jamie Kim, Charles Min, David Byun, Jihoon Han, Jung Su Pak, Phil Si and Doyle Park. Many of these seniors will go on to attend prominent American universities in the fall. Although they are proud of their heritage, they are equally proud to be part of the MC community. They will certainly make us proud as they move forward into the world.

2010- 2011 marks the third year for the Brother Kevin Program here at MC. Over 60 young men have had the opportunity to participate in this wonderfully successful program thus far. The program is geared primarily to freshmen who wish to come to MC but may need to strengthen some of their academic skills in order to be better equipped to manage a vigorous MC college preparatory course load. In addition, the program is

The expression, “MC Family,” is much more than a catchy phrase for us at Malden Catholic. We believe that it verbalizes feelings experienced but perhaps unnamed when young men (and their parents) first phone the school or arrive at our doors on Crystal Street. We feel that the words are a genuine expression of what Malden Catholic chooses to be, and its first faces and voices belong to receptionist, Mrs. Sherry Endicott, and main office secretary, Mrs. Diane Connelly. Both were card-carrying members of the MC Family years before becoming employees and official representatives of the school.

A graduate of Malden High School, Mrs. Endicott began working at Malden Catholic’s cafeteria in 2003. When the receptionist’s position opened up the next year, Headmaster Brother Robert Green recognized her as an easy choice for it because of her obvious warmth and friendliness. Mrs. Endicott’s husband, Peter, is a member of the MC class of 1978, and his four brothers are also members of our alumni (Thomas ’69, David ’70, Michael ’73, James ’75). Their late mother, Mary (Devir) Endicott, graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1940. She was very much involved in the MC’s Lucky 1000 Club, and was the first woman appointed by the Xaverian Brothers in 1978 to serve on the Malden Catholic Board of Trustees, recommended by Headmaster Brother Frederick Codair. Sherry and Peter Endicott are the proud parents of four sons, all of whom attended Immaculate Conception Grade School in Malden before coming to Malden Catholic: Peter ’99, Brian ‘ 01, Sean ’04, and Greg ’06. When Sherry is asked her favorite part of working at MC, no one is surprised to hear this MC Mom say, with gusto, “the kids. They make everything worth it!”

Mrs. Diane Connelly grew up in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School. Diane’s best friend introduced her to her cousin Joseph Connelly of Malden. Joe is a member of the Malden Catholic class of 1969 and his three brothers, Michael ’65, Richard ’72, and John ’75 are also MC alumni. Joe’s father, the late Matthew Connelly, was an

enthusiastic supporter of Malden Catholic in the early years at Crystal Street and, with Headmaster Brother Robertus, was a founder of the school’s famous (and necessary) beano program. Diane and Joe Connelly were likely the first (and only) couple to be married in the school chapel. Their sons, Kevin and David, spent many happy childhood hours at Malden Catholic with their grandfather, even helping to stock the soda machines. Kevin went on to graduate from MC in 2001, with David following him in 2003. Kevin Connelly was married this summer at St. Mary’s Church in Melrose. His bride Marianne is the niece of Malden Catholic graduates Danny ’75 and Kevin ’79 Foley. (Surprised?)

Diane Connelly began as a volunteer to stuff envelopes in MC’s advancement office in 1995, and soon earned the appointment as the school’s director of alumni. She moved to the main office when the position opened there four years later. Besides her important ministry of hospitality on the telephone and at the front counter, she performs such essential services as coordinator of attendance and administrative assistant for report cards, scheduling, and maintaining records, as well as performing many of the behind the scenes activities that help the school to function on a day-to-day and year-to-year basis. Diane appreciates the personal connections associated with her work, watching the transformations that occur among members in our caring, family atmosphere.

People who attend such Malden Catholic events as the Senior Banquet and Commencement can observe Diane Connelly and Sherry Endicott outside their usual office spaces, serving as hostesses to arrange for a perfect graduation experience for the young men who are becoming members of the MC alumni that day. Of course, these events have a warm and special feel to them. Diane and Sherry would say, “They have to - they’re for members of our family.”

In addition, Bob has served on numerous commit-tees with the National Catholic Educational Association, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. and local school boards throughout the Archdiocese of Boston. Some of you may already know Bob as an MC Parent; his son Christopher is a Malden Catholic graduate, Class of 2007. Bob served as the first principal of North Cambridge Catholic High School as a Cristo Rey model school. The model based on the vision of some Jesuits and business leaders in Chicago in the mid-1990s leverages on a previously untapped synergy between corporate Amer-ica and the educational community enabling students to develop professional skills and network with area busi-ness leaders.

Recent graduates from the classes of 2010, 2009, 2008 and 2007 gathered in the Brother Gilbert Center in January for an afternoon of reminiscing and pizza. This annual event is quickly becoming a tradition that young alumni look forward to.

Bingo continues to be an important income source to support all of Malden Catholic. Volunteers are the engine that drives this, the most successful bingo in the Com-monwealth. Join other parents, have fun, and give back to support the education you want for your sons and grandsons. It takes a few hours on a few Sundays each year. Please contact 781.475.5338.

Patrick Allen observed that Lieutenant Hunnewell’s “time across the globe is not unlike Saint Francis Xavier. While the purpose may be different, both are men who were influenced by their faith to travel far and wide to help those in need.” Interestingly, Steve had earlier com-mented that he had served with three officers from ei-ther a Xaverian Brothers’ or Jesuit school whom he ranks as some of the finest officers with whom he had ever served. One of these was 1st Lieutenant Derek Hines, a graduate of St. John’s Prep who gave his life while serv-ing with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Afghanistan.

All those involved in the conversation with Lieutenant Hunnewell found that the experience provided signifi-cant insights into the role of the United States in Af-ghanistan. Having such a conversation with “one of our own” made it especially meaningful. Ben Hoang spoke for everyone in commenting, “I felt honored to be able to talk to him.”

Many Malden Catholic students every year travel on mission trips to impoverished areas abroad and in the U.S. to serve the disadvantaged. Among the many Malden Catholic Lancers who have made a positive impact on their world are Danny Fitzgerald, John Ronayne and Bobby Celona. These students made a service trip to Peru, actually building a chapel in San Bartola, where they witnessed a baby baptized, a couple renew their vows and children receive First Communion. Before their efforts, the people of that area had no formal place to worship.

Other students do acts of service closer to home, but just as meaningful. Alex O’Donovan recently raised $15,000 for juve-nile diabetes and was recognized for his charitable efforts. Joey Cappuccio has raised thousands for cancer research and was the speaker this year at the Relay for Life in North Reading, dedicated in memory of his father, Ralph.

Throughout the school year, our students reach out to those in need – the hungry, the ill, the isolated -- from the Stoneham Senior Center to the Boston Food Bank to Hospice of the North Shore. Service to others is part of the lesson of Malden Catho-lic, a lesson that is as varied and as wonderful as our students. We applaud Rudy Favard and all the students of Malden Catholic who live the values of the Xaverian Brothers day-in and day-out. Humility, trust, zeal, compassion, and simplic-ity-- our world would truly be a better place if all of us would reflect and act on these values.

designed to help prepare students to successfully move on to college or the working world after graduation. This year there are 21 students in the program. They are doing quite well, in fact. Fourteen of the twenty-one students have achieved some level of honor roll status. The boys have shown marked improvement in their writing skills as well as note-taking and study skills, thus enabling them to perform at a true college preparatory level here at MC.

As these students prepare to move to their sophomore year, Ms. Cenca, Director of the Brother Kevin Program, and the team of dedicated teachers working with the boys will evaluate the growth of each student. Because the students have made tremendous academic strides, they will continue to perform well in the next three years of high school using the strategies taught by the team. A few students will receive additional support into the sophomore year, but will become fully matriculated in the junior year.

The goals of the program are modeled after the Xaverian Brothers’ Spiritual values of Simplicity, Humility, Compassion, Trust and Zeal. Ms. Cenca explains that, “the teachers, staff and faculty are the heart of the program. The love and compassion everyone has shown toward these students in amazing. Everyone in this school has been tremendously supportive of the program and the students. Enabling all students to achieve is obviously a school wide goal. Because of this, the students are able to move out of the BK program and matriculate into the standard college preparatory track and do well.”

As the program continues to grow and thrive, we are proud of the continued success of these students who proudly represent MC and its commitment to excellence.

ROunD uP OF MC ATHLETICS

Early February headlines in local papers covering high school sports bore headlines trumpeting “MC hockey in line for Super 8 Crown.” Malden Catholic was unanimously selected as the Super 8’s top seed, not surprising considering the Lancers’ dominating romp (16-2-2) through one of the state’s toughest schedules. The squad was favored mostly on the strength of its Hockey East-bound top line, comprised of Mike Vecchione (UNH), Brendan Collier (BU), and Ryan Fitzgerald (BC). The threesome has combined for more than 65 goals and 175 points on the season, helping MC score an average of 6.15 goals per game. Only one team legitimately beat MC, Hingham; the Lancers forfeited a 5-1 win over Weymouth in December after coach Chris

Serino realized he had dressed an ineligible player.

The Lancers won (4-3) over Central Catholic in the first round Saturday night, March 5th, at Merrimack College. They then hammered Hingham 8-1 , beat Weymouth 5-4, zapped BC 4-2, leaving St. John’s Prep as their final opponent. The top-ranked Lancers sealed the title with a 4-3 win over the Prep in overtime, to win their first of Super 8 title championship. Needless to say the MC community welcomed MC hockey’s return to the front ranks.

MC basketball finished its regular season with a record of 10-10, matching its best season record in the past 10 years (10-10 in 2007). That put the Lancers into their second straight MIAA Division 2 State Boys Basketball Tournament. In their last game of the season, against Revere, senior captain Dominic Mastascusa scored a career-high 28 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked five shots in a dominating performance. Along with Mastascusa, Malden Catholic also got strong performances from junior Jared Lewis (16 points, 9 rebounds) and his twin brother Jordan Lewis (11 rebounds, 5 points). Coach Jim Silvio pointed out the play of seniors Rob Arsenault, a captain from Melrose who “played a great floor game” and Walker O’Connor, “who gives it everything he’s got every night.”

Dominic Mastascusa and Jared Lewis were each named to the 2010-11 Catholic conference All Star Basketball Team.

Like MC, Winchester and Reading also finished their seasons with 10-10 records. By a coin toss, it was determined that MC would face Winchester High. MC lost to that team on February 28, in a hard fought game what ended with a score of 50-47.

In wrestling senior twin brothers, Kyle and Devin Visconti were New England wrestling champions. Devin Visconti was the first Lancer wrestler in school history to win an MIAA All-State Meet title when he won over C. J. Doherty in the title final. Moving on to the New England Championships, he won the crown in the 145-pound division. His brother, Kyle, lost in the All-State meet in the 125-pound category to Matt Buco, but beat him 10-3 at the 47th annual New England championships held in early March at New Haven. This might be the first time in Massachusetts high school wrestling history that twin brothers are New England wrestling champs. Fourth year MC head coach Mike Bolduc, who’s been a wrestling coach for 20 years, called them two of the most dedicated, committed athletes he’s seen, and deserving of their success.

At the Tri-County League Indoor Track Meet, senior Bobby Celona, received the John Bosenquet Award, given to the student who exemplifies outstanding scholarship, citizenship and character. A four-year team member, Bobby has served as a captain of both Cross Country and Indoor Track as a senior.

Lancer baseball opened the season with six straight losses—three against Catholic Conference foes. But as the season wore on, the number 13 Lancers turned things around, winning 11 of 13 games to qualify for the state tournament. In the MIAA Division 1 State Tournament preliminary round game in the North Section, MC set school records for home runs—four, by Nick Roberto, Sean Glabicky, Nick Turco, and Jake Porrazzo-- slamming Newton North 16-3. Senior captain Paul Yanakopulos was solid on the mound as well as driving in runs. Next they faced Peabody in a 13-inning, four and a half hour game, losing to the Tanners 6-5.

The weather this dpring played havoc with the tennis schedule, and MC had to close the season with six matches the final week of the season. The varsity tennis team set a school record with 6 wins in one week!

MC defeated Medford twice: 3-2, 4-1, Lynnfield twice: 3-2,3-2, Woburn: 4-1, and the crowning achievement, a 4-1 win over a Gloucester team that had only lost 2 matches all year. MC finished with 12 wins for the third year in a row. No previous Lancer tennis team had won as many matches in over 30 years! MC qualified for the state tournament for the 5th year in a row. The Lancers were led by junior co-captains Joey Tumblin & Matt Powers.
