Precedent Study:Loblolly House

Taylor’s IslandJeffrey Dike and Melisa Allen

The goal of this precedent study was to understand the relationship between the

building and the lanscape. The Loblolly House by Kieran Timberlake is a wonderful

example of how to orient the building with respect to the prevailing wind and the sun.

Raising the building up on stilts gives a feeling of being up within the trees. The facades were

designed by tracing the way the loblolly trees layer with each other in the forest behind the

home.

The moving window panels and the use of fold-ing doors allow for a complete control of day-light and wind. Allowing all of the light or wind

in; or closing the panels to block light and wind gives the feeling of being one with nature or of

complete privacy and seclusion.

The Path Less TraveledBoston Arboretum

The Boston Arboretum, ran by Harvard University, is one of the many pieces of the

Emerald Necklace by Fredrick Law Omsted.

Creating a young explorers education center and residence for visiting ecologist

was the main purpose of the program. Spaces for children to gather but also

branch out and explore was created through the idea of silvers and sheering.

Moving and manipulating the ground topogra-phy allowed certain moments that gave areas

of seclustion. Focusing on the circulation gave me the opportunity that allowed me to reinforce the idea of one path and no being able to back

track.

The path and program was laid out to create a path that would have a

circulation that was navigated in one direction at a time and do not allow

for the reverse path.

SEASONAL PAVILION AND MODEL BOATHOUSE

Back Bay Fens

The Back Bay Fens were designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted as a part of the

Emerald Necklace. This site has many uses and possesses a high degree of cultural value. It is set within an urban context; surrounded by

schools, museums, and homes.

As design majors a program was given to enlove this site and give new meaning. The program called for a pavilion, a model boat

rental area and launch, storage, bathrooms, and a gallery.

My main idea was to connect a visitor to the edge of the water through a series of moments

that encouraged a person to travel along a sequence and off the man-made path.

Through a series of diagrams about the waters edge, came a design that used the edge in a beneficial way. The shape of the water’s edge

and the topography shaped the design.

A collection of perspectives show how the design allows the visitor to interact with

the water and the edge. A sensitive use of materials allows the structures to fit nicely

into nature without being a disturbance.

MULTI-USE WELCOME AND PERFORMANCE CENTERThe New England Conservatory

The project was a new welcome center for the NEC. Set on the corner of Huntington Avenue and Gainsborough Street, it is the front of the

campus.

The program called for a design that would be a place for students to gather and

collaborate.

Through my explorations for the site around the campus I came up with the concept

of a collage. Through many process collages spaces and a building was

formed through a collage like process.

Through a series of collages along Huntington Avenue, a collection of

diagrams emerged which lead up to the creation of a plan made from

collaged spaces to gain a particular feeling.

Using third dimensional approach to create plans right over a collage allows for the ability to

easily move and change. Layering transparent glass and solid spaces allowed for the spaces

on other layers to be visible.

Studying the MFA gave an understanding on how to take a existing building and add on a

modern addition. Norman Foster’s addition was a excellent example. Uses a series of diagrams

to gain an understanding of the old and new allowed for my future designs to be meaningful

and have consideration what the surrounding and existing structures.

SKETCHING ON SITEThe Church of Saint Paul

Cambridge

Learning to sketch and analysis a site is the main focus when it comes to being an architect. The Church of Saint Paul

was a perfect example and first project to understand site context and grasp and understanding of diagramming.

Using the pre-existing site, an appreciation was gained through a series of diagrams

and perspectives. Hand-drawn perspectives and hand-drawn elevations allowed for a

hybrid diagram to be more abstract.

VIEWING AND REFLECTING IN THE CITY

The Church of Saint PaulCambridge

The Church of Saint Paul was the site for the design project. Taking the empty courtyard

and giving it new life was the main idea. The courtyard was a short cut for many people trying to reach the next street over. Giving someone an option to rest and explore at

the same time was my main focus.

Adding spaces for contemplation and relaxation was the focus for this project. Spaces had to be able to hold a certain amount of people and have some type

of shelter from the rain, wind, or sun.

Page 46: CRYSTAL GREEN - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/nuvuplatform-prod/uploads/tmp/20151203T154… · MULTI-USE WELCOME AND PERFORMANCE CENTER The New England Conservatory The project was a

Through many diagrams and perspectives of the site a design grew. Having the knowledge

of the site allowed for the best design to come through. A series of plans, sections, and

diagrams the design came to its final stage.

Final plans placed in the site allowed for diagrams and analytical drawings to be done after the building was designed. The cycle of

designing, creating, and re-working was learned in drawings like these.
