CEREMONIAL TRADITIONS

Wedding CeremonyFilipino Weddings reflect the strong tradition of family & extended family that are prevalent in the Filipino culture. Thus, Filipino wedding ceremonies typically involve many people, and the wedding rituals typically “speak” to the couple personally. Beyond the usual bridal party, the Filipino wedding involves people who are also significant in the couple’s life. New Godparents (Ninong and Ninang) are chosen to take part in the ceremony and to attest to the fact that the couple is ready for marriage. Crystal and Hans have chosen to include these traditions in their ceremony today.

Unity CandleThe Unity Candle represents two families becoming one. The parents of the bride and groom light candles on each side of the unity candle which represent the separate lives, families and experiences of the couple before their wedding day. After the exchange of vows, but before the exchange of rings the bride and groom take each side candle and light the unity candle together, uniting the families and experiences into one.

Unity CoinsThe wedding coins (also known as: Arras [ah-rahs] or Arrhae [ar-rah-heh]) have traditionally symbolized the prosperity that would be shared by the new couple, and the groom’s promise to provide for the welfare of the new family. Veil CeremonyVeil sponsors drape a long white veil on the grooms shoulder and pin it. The other side of the veil is then draped over the bride’s head. The veil is used to symbolize two people who are ‘clothed’ as one.

Cord CeremonyA ceremonial wedding cord in the form of a figure eight is placed over the heads of the couple, to lay on their shoulders. The cord symbolizes the infinite bond of the marriage.
