5.5 Vacuum Insulated/Jacketed Piping (VIP / VJP) VIP/VJP offers the following benefits over the conventional foam insulated piping:
• Thermal insulation performance: 6 to 10 times better and much less boil off rate; • Space saving: Insulation space is 50mm whereas foam insulation is typically 400mm thick (radial).
This saves installation space/footprint by 700mm in both horizontal and vertical directions. Pipe supporting structures such as jetties, modules or platforms can become more compact;
• Time saving: Core pipes remain cold much longer (many weeks) between use, thereby eliminating the need for subsequent cool-down processes if idle periods are less than 2 weeks. This saves time for loading/unloading LNG from ship;
• Money Saving: Cheaper jetty construction and less LNG boil-off; • Structural Integrity: Much more durable and less prone to accidental damage. No need for heat-
break for pipe supports; • In-service Inspection: Much easier to monitor and inspect pipe conditions and maintain.
