STORYBOOK PARADE

The first of a three-part series in our dynamic Literary Arts Program, the Storybook Parade, highlighted the benefits of good reading hab-its, which begin in the early developmental years of every child. Crusaders are encour-aged to develop a passion for literature and become life-long readers and learners. Students donated fictional, as well as non-fictional books to the Media Center with a personal recommendation for future read-ers. Our next stop on the Storybook Parade trail is in February 2014… See you there! Kelle Hunter,

Elementary Media Specialist

Veteran's DayOn Wednesday,

November 5, 2013, CSCA hosted a resplendent

Veteran’s Day Assembly to honor ser-vice men and women in the armed forces, as

well as first responders, in our local communities. Our keynote speaker was Mr. Wills Ryan, CSCA School

Commission Chair, who challenged our students to follow in the footsteps of our veterans and rise up to take hold of the reins of

leadership with courage and integrity. CSCA honored men and women from all five branches of the military: Army, Navy, Marine Corp., Air Force, and Coast Guard. We also recognized and showed our appreciation for our first responders: National Guardsmen, Border Patrol Agents, Police Officers, Firefighters, and Paramedics, as well as city and county offi-cials. We are grateful for the hard work and dedication these men and women accept daily, and will continue to pray for their safety and protection. Special thanks to Mrs. Monica Colón, Joy Poole, accompanist, and the Honors Chorus (Kent Barnhill, Michelle Clark, J.J. Minshull, Anna Park, Jessica Raspolich, and Simone Tracey), for presenting a beautiful rendition of Armed Forces-Pride of America!

ADOPT-A-LEADERCSCA is adopting local leaders! As an integral part of preparing our students to become globally re-sponsible citizens, CSCA students are partnering with local community leaders from the City of Coral Springs, Broward County, and the State of Florida. Each class is selecting a community leader, such as our Fire Chief, Police Chief, Mayor, and Governor and will develop active relationships with them to offer support and show appreciation for their ser-vice. We want our leaders to know that we pray for them daily and ask God to give them the strength and courage they need to fulfil their duties.

We were delighted to host Mayor Vincent Boccard from Coral Springs, who visited with our 2nd grade students and provided valuable information on his role in our great city. Our Mayor was thrilled to be-come an honorary Crusader for the day!

MORPH is a weekend camp for middle school students with huge games, hilarious skits, powerful speaking, sincere worship, and the opportunity to experience the God who changes lives. It is organized and run by SO-FLO, a network of youth ministries from the South Florida and Gulfstream Presbyteries of the Presbyte-rian Church in America.

Space is limited to first 28 youth, so register early.

Our WORSHIP leaders for the weekend: CADENCE thebandcadence.com

Cadence is a 5-piece Christian rock band comprised of all fam-ily members: Donny Karpinen (lead vocals/ guitar/keys), his sister Carrie Karpinen (drummer), and his wife Brittany Karpinen (vo-cals) make up three of the five. Jeffrey Sward (bass) and Andrew Sward (lead electric guitar) are brothers and are both siblings of Brittany Karpinen (maiden name Sward). Yeah we know… it’s confusing to us too. Cadence writes and performs music that is both commercial and congregational.

The band started out as and remains a significant part of their church, Victory Christian Center, in Boca Raton, Florida. Cadence has shared the stage with artists that include: Casting Crowns, Tenth Avenue North, Matt Redman, Sanctus Real, and many more. The band hits the stage with high energy performances, but they are just as passionate about Jesus’ mandate to be ser-vants of all first and foremost, and this is evident through their daily lives as musicians and Christians.

The SPEAKER: TODD VELEBER from Wildwood Church

Todd has been serving as the Student Pastor at Wildwood since 2004. He is married to his best friend, Brooke, and they have 3 boys – Brock, Jake, and Cole; with a 4th boy on the way! If by chance, Todd has a free moment away from family or ministry, he enjoys running, tennis, fishing, camping, hiking, waterskiing, or really anything outdoors. Todd grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and then spent time in Birmingham, Alabama where he attended Samford University and Beeson Divinity School.

Todd has a passion to shepherding middle, high school, and col-lege students.

Chocolate Fever!Last Friday, a strange phenomenon occurred: our entire 3rd grade class came to school with brown spots all over their faces! There seemed to be some kind of epidemic underway so Nurse Sylvia was asked to come to the classrooms to make an assessment. After taking the students’ temperature and studying samples of the unusual-looking spots, she diagnosed the entire 3rd grade class with “Chocolate Fever”! The students spent most of the morning trying to cure the disease by eating all kinds of chocolate treats: brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and marshmallows dipped in chocolate sauce, but to no avail. The “fe-ver” continued. By lunchtime, the disease had spread to the teachers, and the students were worse. Finally, after much research, Nurse Sylvia came up with a cure: the vanilla milkshake is the only known remedy for this very rare reading phenomenon! After a long drink of the antidote, the spots disappeared, and the 3rd grade students were declared “Chocolate Fever” free!

“Chocolate Fever”, by Robert Kimmel Smith, is a fictional novel that is a part of our 3rd Grade Reading program. Stu-dents study the literary elements of the book and conclude the story with excitement and fun. Look out for more interesting ways that CSCA students incorporate reading strategies to enhance their passion for reading!

Kindergarten through 5th grade enjoyed a week of baseball camp with Coach Cleveland and his high school baseball team. The campers learned the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, base running, and catching. They concluded the week with a game showcasing the skills they learned throughout the week. Much fun was had by all!

Jr Crusaders Baseball Camp Thespians One ActA warm Crusader congratulations goes out to Rachel Hansard, who was awarded All Star Cast at the District 7 Thespian One Act Competition for the play It’s not you, it’s me.

Senior Buddies

First Graders met their Senior Buddies for the first time this year to read a favorite book. A yummy snack was provided by the Se-niors, and everyone had a great time! This was the first of sev-eral meetings that the first Graders and Senior Buddies will have throughout the year. It is a great mentoring experience for the Seniors, and an experience that the little ones can’t get enough of! By the end of the school year, they will be like big brothers and sisters to the First Graders. Thank you to Mrs. Crowther for working with Mrs. Leonard and Mrs. Mangini to organize this fun event!

CENTERN E W SMEDIA Second Grade Classes Celebrate

Polar Bear Week via WebcastThe students from our second grade classes were able to participate in a live webcast from the Tun-dra in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. They watched the webcast on Wednesday, November 6th in our upper media center . The students were able to see live polar bears living on the tundra in the webcast and were able to participate by typing in questions to the scientists who were participating as part of Polar Bear Week . Our second graders asked the sci-entists why the polar bears fight and the answer to their ques-tion was read—“from Grade 2 students at Coral Springs Chris-tian Academy, Coral Springs, Florida” and answered on the air!

The students and teachers were quite excited. The sci-entists also commented about receiving a question from a school in such a warm climate. We then sent them a picture of our palm-tree lined water garden area. We re-ceived an email later in the day, thanking us for our par-ticipation in this event.

One of the highlights of 4th Grade is to study the rich history and development of the great State of Florida. This is a compre-hensive component of the Social Studies curriculum and a fun topic to learn. After 12 weeks of intense study, our 4th and 5th graders set off on a quest to fully experi-ence what they had learned in their text-books. Off to St. Augustine they went to seek adventure! They were not disappoint-ed. Students learned all about the Castillo de San Marcos, the only Fort in the entire continental United States that has never been captured or controlled by enemy hands! They visited several colonial quar-ters: Native American, French, Spanish, and British, and experienced first-hand how the early settlers lived and worked. One very interesting factoid was the history of Fort Mose, the first free Black settlement in the United States. Runaway slaves were given free passage and citizenship by Spain in ex-change for their loyalty in battle. Students

also got the opportunity to climb the 219 steps of one of the oldest lighthouses in the country and travel the path of Christopher Columbus and other explorers who navigated from Eu-rope to the new world. And then there were the pirates! In one of the most recent St. Augustine ex-hibits, many artifacts and relics on display told the many stories of pirate hunts and buried trea-sure. Students learned interest-ing tidbits about cartography, early medicine, and the law of the land in each era. After two full day days of fun, excitement, and academic camaraderie, our junior historians returned to Coral Springs a little weary in body but energized to share the wealth of information they had gathered in historic St. Augustine.

Teacher of The MonThTeachers make a world of difference in the life of every stu-dent they touch, and the effects last for a lifetime. Here at

CSCA, we make every effort to honor teachers who are diligent, hard-work-ing, and most of all, who set high standards of integrity in their role as mentors. Each month, one teacher is selected as Teacher-of-the-Month and receives the privilege of owning the most coveted parking space on campus! We are delighted to honor Mrs. Sue Laser, Elementary Fine Arts Teacher.

Mrs. Laser came to CSCA in 1994 as a Pre-school parent. She and her husband fell in love with the high academic stan-dards and Christian values that CSCA offered. After lending her gifts and talents as a volunteer for many years, Mrs. La-ser decided to join the CSCA team of professionals, first as a Middle School Drama Teacher, and in 2001, as our Elementary Music Teacher. Mrs. Laser credits her success to God for pro-viding her with an unwavering love for educating children. She says she just loves to find all the “hidden gems” of talent in her little ones. Her philosophy in life helps her to cope with the rigors of her duties: “Take a deep breath, and surrender it all to God, Who is the One really in control.” She is grateful for all the love and support she receives from her CSCA family and is honored to have been chosen as Teacher of the Month.

2ND GRADE THANKSGIVING PROGRAM

For the past three weeks, National Honor Soci-ety students have been busy collecting canned goods for their Annual Thanksgiving Drive. This is a community effort that the entire student body of Crusaders is proud to partner with. Stu-dents donate items to fill baskets for needy fam-ilies, who might not otherwise have a healthy meal for Thanksgiving. The outpouring of sup-port was very admirable; students stepped up to the plate and brought in enough food to service 24 families! Even elementary teachers got involved in this effort. Once the baskets were packed, the NHS students added a fresh turkey and pumpkin pie and said a prayer for the receiving fami-lies. On Wednesday, NHS students set off to deliver the goodies to the families. The joy on the faces of both parents and children alike was well worth the hard work. CSCA is proud

to be a sponsor for such a worthy cause. This is one sure way to spread the love of Jesus to a hurting world and accept the charge that Christ gave to be our brother’s keeper: “Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers, you did for Me.” -Matt. 25:40.A heartfelt thank you to Jessica Bell, NHS Presi-dent, for her tireless work in organizing the Thanksgiving Drive. You are amazing!

-Simone Tracey, NHS

The National Honor Society is a prestigious service organiza-tion with a mission to serve the Coral Springs Christian School family and community at large. Students are invited for member-ship based on academic achieve-ment, leadership skills, and com-munity involvement.

Wednesday, November 13th was a very special day for our Elementary students. Our talented second Grade students regaled us with a very moving rendition of the An-nual Thanksgiving Recital. Students came dressed as pilgrims and Native Americans and re-enacted the events of the first Thanksgiving feast of 1621. Families and friends were delighted by songs and recitations as the students strutted on stage. Kudos to Mrs. Laser, Elementary Fine Arts Director, and second Grade teachers, Mrs. Medico, Mrs. Travers, Ms. Yunker, and Mrs. Tinsley for a job well done!
