Q: Where is Leah Rem-ini’s great series on Sci-entology? It hasn’t beenon in the past few weeks. Will it ever return? -- J.R.

A: You’re not the onlyone who has been ask-ing. On Feb. 19, Reminireposted a message onTwitter from fellow pro-ducer Mike Rinder statingthat there would be no epi-sode of “Scientology: TheAftermath” that evening. He further wrote: “Thishas been a shortened sea-son due to circumstancesbeyond our control, butthere is more planned andwe will let u know whenas soon as we know from@AETV.”This led many to specu-

late that theA&ENetworkwas caving to pressure

from the Scientology or-ganization. For those whodon’t know, Leah Reminiis an actress (“King ofQueens”) and formerScientologist who hasco-produced and hostedseveral documentary se-ries calling into questionthe religion’s practices. The docu-series featuresonscreen testimonials offormer Scientology lead-ers and followers, and hascast an unfavorable lighton the group, which hasseveral famous stars asmembers.Remini replied to Rind-

er’s tweet: “Until then ...we are still working. Don’tyou worry, Scientology.Everything you do givesus content.”If it doesn’t come back

on soon, I would keepchecking the network’swebsite, www.aetv.com.

It still has full episodesthat have already aired,so that’s a good sign, andhopefully it will havesome information soonabout when the series willresume. If you’re curiousabout any rebuttals bythe church, there’s a sec-tion on the A&E website

called “Aftermath Let-ters,” which has corre-spondence from Scientol-ogy representatives.***Q: After Bradley Coo-

per and Lady Gaga sangtogether at the Oscars andeveryone was wonderingif they were a couple, I

couldn’t help but wonderhow his wife felt aboutit. Has she commented?-- P.J.

A: Cooper isn’t mar-ried, but his significantother and mother of hisdaughter, model IrinaShayk, was right therein the audience cheeringthem. If she’s botheredby it, she hasn’t shown it.In fact, she was sitting inthe audience next to Ms.Gaga, Cooper’s co-star in“A Star Is Born.”One woman who might

not have been amused bythe performance is Coo-per’s ex-wife, actress Jen-nifer Esposito (“NCIS”).She responded on Insta-gram to speculation abouta romance between thetwo with, simply, “Ha.”***Q: Whatever happened

to Jimmy Smits? Is hecoming back to televisionanytime soon? -- M.M.

A: Smits, probably bestknown for his star-makingrole as Victor Sifuenteson “L.A. Law,” has beenacting steadily for yearsnow. He was a regular on“NYPD Blue,” “Dexter”and “Sons of Anarchy,”and has just been cast inthe pilot for a new legaldrama, “Bluff City Law,”which is set in Memphisand focuses on civil-rightscases. Hopefully we’ll seeSmits marching into thecourtroom, briefcase inhand, this fall on NBC.

Thefourth-gen A8 continuesthe tradition of pushing its metal, plastic, and silicon to the forefront ofluxury-car modernity, so much so that Audi isn’t yet keen to permit thefull deployment of the car’s headlining Level 3 automation capabilityhere in the U.S. The new A8’s aluminum-intensive architecture is of-fered stateside only in its long-wheelbase configuration, the A8L.

Dear Car Talk:I have a 2009 GMC Envoy. It looks and runs fabulousand has less than 40,000miles on it. On a recentlong driving trip, the airconditioning blew lots ofcold air at first. But itwould become less coldas the miles wore on.If I stopped to buy gasfor 15 minutes, when Istarted driving again, itwould blow lots of coldair. If I drove for a longenough period, it wouldnot just blow less coldair, but would sometimesstart blowing mist out thevents. I could get the mistto stop by turning thetemperature all the wayto hot, but that wasn’t socomfortable. The dealercould find nothing wrong. What do you think?- Charles

I think you should stasha half dozen Axe Deodor-ant sticks in the glovebox, Charles. I suspectyou have a failing airconditioning compressorclutch. The compressorclutch is the electro-me-chanical device that turnsyour AC compressor onand off. The AC compres-sor will normally cycleon and off while it’s inuse, depending on the de-mand for cool air. And theclutch is what starts andstops it. So if the compres-sor clutch is faulty andfailing when it gets hot(like after a multi-hourdrive), it would essential-ly turn off your AC. Thatwould pretty well explainthe lack of cold air, huh,Charles? Plus, while theAC’s not working, warm, moist air enters the cab-in and builds up aroundthe AC evaporator underthe dash. Then, when theclutch DOES kick back(randomly, or after arest), that warm, moistair will hit the newly coldevaporator and make fog.Just like what happensaround the Golden GateBridge most evenings. If your Envoy had comewith the theme musicpackage, Tony Bennettwould’ve come on the ra-dio singing “I Left MyHeart in San Francisco”as the fog poured out.Your dealer found noth-ing wrong because hedidn’t drive it for fivehours like you did and re-ally heat up the compres-sor clutch, Charles. Andsince he’s unlikely to bewilling to take a five-hourtest drive in your 10-year-old AC-less truck, yourbest bet is to diagnosethis yourself. Bring yourmechanic a cup of coffeeand a couple of donutsone morning and ask himto show you where theAC compressor clutch is.Then, by turning the ACon and off, he can showyou what the clutch lookslike when it’s engaged, and what it looks likewhen it’s not engaged.Take a little video onyour phone for reference. Then, next time you’recrossing Death Valley andyou feel warm air comingout of the vents, hop out, open the hood and see ifthe compressor clutch isengaged or not. If it’s not, you’ve diagnosed yourown problem, Charles. That’ll make you feel sogood about yourself thatyour five-hour drive backhome without AC will feellike a mere four and ahalf hours.

10 smart guidelines forbuying a used car

(BPT) - Buying a used carcan be a great decision. Of-tentimes, that’swhere you’llfind a deal. On the otherhand, you’ve got to makesure there won’t be any sur-prises.

Before you hit the car lot, take some time to preparefor the purchase. Theseguidelines will help youmake a wise decision on aused vehicle that works foryou.

Set a budget - and stick to it!

Think about what you’rewilling to pay for a car.Have a budget and stick toit. If you plan to finance itthrough your bank or creditunion, figure out what youwould be comfortable pay-ing everymonth.

“When it comes to the costof owning a vehicle, in ad-dition to the car payment, think about other relatedmonthly expenses, such asgas, maintenance and insur-ance,” says Joe Pendergast, vice president of consumerlending at Navy FederalCreditUnion.

Getpre-approved fora loan.

Bygettingpre-approvedfora loan, you can be confidentin your budget and set yourfinancing limits from thestart.

“Getting pre-approved mayevenincreaseyourpurchas-ing power. Oftentimes, thedealer may be more willingtobargainon thecarprice ifthe amount you’rewilling topay has already been set,”saysPendergast.

Financial institutions, suchas Navy Federal for ex-ample, offer auto loans na-tionwide at low fixed rates, discounts on insurance andasset protection, aswell as acalculator tohelpdeterminehow much financing yourcarwill cost.

Create amust-have list.

It’s important to separatethe must-haves from thenice-to-haves when lookingat vehicle features. If youhave kids, a four-door ve-hiclemightbeessential, andyou’ll want to ensure there’senough seating for your en-tire family. You might wantleather, but cloth seats willdo.Knowyourneedsversusyour wants and make a listof non-negotiables.

You probably also have afew types of vehicles inmind. Do some researchandreadreviewssoyoucannarrow your focus whenyou’re shopping. This helps

save time when searchingonline or navigating the carlots.

Understand the history.

At least one person ownedthe vehicle before you, soit’s important to know thecar’s history. When you getapproved for a used carloan through Navy Federal, you get free access to aCARFAX(R) Vehicle Histo-ry Report, which helps youidentify cars with potentialproblems and purchasesafe, reliable ones.

Pay attention tomileage.

For used cars, the lower themileage, the better. Fewermiles often means there’slesswear and tear - a highervalue for you. A good av-erage to target for cars isabout 15,000miles a year.

Check the tires.

One important thing to con-sider when buying a usedcar is the condition of thetires. If the tires don’t haveenough tread, you’ll need toinvest in newones.

Test drive.

Never consider buying avehiclebefore taking it foratestdrive.Bygettingbehindthewheel, you can ensure itfeels good to you, find outif anything seems off, suchas strange noises or smells, and see how it handles.

“Don’t rush the process. Ifyou’re not satisfied after atest drive, keep searching, there’s plenty of inventoryout there,” saysPendergast.

Get an inspection.

It will cost you, but if youwant peace of mind, con-sider investing in an inspec-tionbyacertifiedmechanic.You’ll have to request bor-rowing the car for the in-spection, which may notalways be possible, but it’sworth exploring if you’rehaving second thoughts.

Certifications.

If you’re shopping for aused car that is five yearsold or less, youmaywant toexplore certified used vehi-cles.Somedealershipsoffercertifications for the usedcars they are reselling un-der their brand. This couldinclude valuable bonuses, such as vehicle inspectionsand warranties, not to men-tion peace ofmind.

Shopping for a used carcan be an enjoyable experi-ence with these guidelinesin hand.
