of a few cruise lines.the flip side for committed adventurers is that small-ship and expedition cruise

companies are, just like their big-ship counterparts, offering exciting incentives for both early-bird and last-minute bookings. expect to see such inducements as free airfares, companion offers (such as 2-for-1) and deep discounts as companies trade off profits against occupancy rates to stay liquid.

if you’ve been contemplating an adventure cruise this year, it may be the best time to strike. Australian-based companies offering fares in Australian dollars may be the best bet and a good excuse to see some of our stunning coastline, which American and european cruisers travel around the world to see.

these same companies are pushing out from our own shorelines to nearby destinations such as new Zealand, Papua new guinea, Fiji, tahiti, vanuatu and the mysterious solomon islands – countries often visited by the big ships, but being rediscovered by niche vessels able to penetrate the narrow waterways and inlets. even cruises on our own doorstep, to places such as tasmania, are growing in popularity.

the Kimberley has grown to become one of Australia’s most popular cruising destinations. the region’s remoteness and unspoilt scenery attract visitors from all over the country and the world. spectacular waterfalls such as the King george Falls and curious phenomena such as the Horizontal Falls are only a small part of the lure of the area. the region is resplendent in not only wildlife and birdlife but also in thousands of years of Aboriginal tradition and culture.

For those wanting reconnect with nature learn about their own history, there are some fascinating destinations. some highlights include the galapagos islands, the great Barrier reef and the Amazon.

the spirit of true discovery is still alive and well with more companies attempting ground-breaking expeditions to the two extremes of the world – the Arctic and the Antarctic – as well as other cool places such as Alaska and the russian Far east.

While most of the world seems beset with financial woes, conflict and concerns for climate change, experiencing the delicate and endangered environments and cultures of our fragile planet has never been more urgent. Adventure and expedition cruising aboard low-impact vessels remains one of the most responsible and sustainable means for doing so.

A way from the blizzards and penguin colonies, adventure cruisers can often be subject to such perils as sunburn and hangovers. While the concept of true expedition cruising extends to itineraries

well away from the beaten path, there’s still plenty of adventure available for those not wishing to follow in Mawson’s footsteps.

small ships usually cater to passenger numbers well below your typical cruise ship. By today’s standards, cruise liners are accommodating anything upwards of approximately 1,500 passengers, while the world’s largest cruise vessels can offer more than 4,000 berths.

small expedition ships deliver a completely different experience for travellers with vessels in this category rarely carrying more than 500 passengers. even then, some of the world’s best small-ship experiences are only shared with 100 or fewer other cruisers. Apart from the unavoidable crowds every time your ship docks, small ships can visit out-of-the-way ports and islands where no mass tourism exists – often no tourism at all.

the south Pacific presents some of the greatest opportunities here, especially in french Polynesia, fiji and Papua new Guinea. new and one-off itineraries are occasionally offered to remote and seldom-visited islands as part of wider voyages, some of which are even around-the-world odysseys.

Due to their size, small ships have been known to stop at such otherwise difficult-to-access locations such as tristan de cunha, Lord howe island, Bougainville, easter island, the Marquesas, saint helena and the enigmatic Pitcairn island, which was home to the surviving Bounty mutineers.

While the utilitarian expedition vessels drawn from working fleets are built tough for the rigours of polar journeys, other small ships can be more relaxed, allocating space to familiar shipboard comforts such as swimming pools, salons, boutiques, fine-dining restaurants and theatres with live entertainment. essentially, you are enjoying the comforts and amenities of a regular cruise ship visiting highly unusual destinations without the crush of thousands of passengers.

Bear in mind that one of the reasons why cruise lines favour big ships is because of the economies of scale. You are extremely unlikely to find small ship cabins for $100 per day, so be prepared for premium pricing. the flip side is that often items and activities listed as extra or optional on the big ships come included on the smaller ones. shore excursions are the obvious example, while some up-scale vessels have an open bar.

those with a more purist mind to travel will relish the opportunity to visit and interact with remote communities who are relatively unaffected by globalisation. small ships leave smaller environmental footprints and generally deliver enriching interaction for both visitors and hosts. conservation of traditional lifestyles and culture is strongly encouraged and carefully chosen goods such as medical supplies, tools and school materials are given as gifts.

G etting off your expedition ship can often be more exciting than getting on. shore excursions to some of the world’s most isolated and fascinating locations are what attract passengers with a well-

developed sense of adventurew. often, your vessel is simply the means to experience the world.

among the different excursions, there are the ‘must-do’s’ and the aspirational adventures that gain maximum dinner party points. here are just five of the most popular and rewarding excursions available on the world’s expedition fleet.

1. top of the Worldninety degrees north is about as far as you can go. the north Pole has to be the pinnacle in adventure cruising and it is available on the world’s most powerful icebreaker, the brand new, nuclear-powered russian vessel 50 Let Pobedy (meaning 50 years since victory). at the top, enjoy a barbecue on the ice and an obligatory dance around the pole. adventure associates and Peregrine adventure tours can get you there.

2. secret CeremoniesPapua new Guinea is a land of magic and sorcery. Much of this is kept away from prying eyes, but the islands of the Kula trading ring in the solomon sea occasionally burst into colourful celebration, particularly during the yam harvest. the dancing and ceremonies are eye-popping as the most beautiful and eligible young men and women dance in a vivacious routine. orion, aurora, north star Cruises and Coral Princess Cruises all have PnG itineraries.

3. extreme southone hundred years ago, during the so-called heroic age of exploration, men endured unimaginable privations in order to explore antarctica. Many died, including the famous robert Falcon scott on his return voyage from the south Pole. now it’s possible to visit some of these carefully preserved and restored timber huts. those of Mawson, shackleton and scott are all packed with equipment and history that require careful attention to keep them from disappearing forever. A hallmark of expedition cruising is learning, discovery and enrichment. expedition cruise companies excel in providing knowledgeable, expert lecturers and guides to help you extract maximum benefit from your new

environment, whether it’s the vivid nudibranchs hiding in the coral, a perplexing cultural ritual or a historical overview of a tiny ice-locked island deep in the arctic.

Many lecturers become minor celebrities on board and you can expect to find authors, explorers, veterans, academics, scientists and media personalities filed among the ranks. We speak to three prominent guides and lecturers who regularly travel with cruise vessels around the globe.

diminutive doctor nancy sullivan, a consultant anthropologist, has spent the past 20 years living and working in papua new Guinea among the people she has grown to love. nancy’s affection for the resilient, colourful and resourceful Melanesian people is obvious in her animated presentations. she speaks in fluent pidgin to the adults and children, and before long you’ll see her draped in infant islanders transfixed by her alabaster skin, blue eyes and blonde hair.

“tourism is good for papua new Guinea,” repeats nancy, almost as a mantra. “it brings much-needed funds to remote communities, encourages them to maintain a traditional lifestyle and prevents young men, in particular, from having to work in cities where they are subject to many dangerous influences.”

the affable Mick Fogg has a background in marine biology, zoology and chemistry, and a seemingly insatiable appetite for more knowledge and research. despite his arsenal of academic qualifications, Mick has the gift of communicating simply and clearly without condescension. he is a regular aboard MV orion, but has also guided and lectured aboard Coral princess vessels.

“people [aboard expedition ships] are looking for a full experience behind their travels,” says Mick. “they want the whole story, not just another photo for their album. they’re asking questions and filling in gaps in their own understanding and often sharing their knowledge – just don’t ask me about global warming!”

robert (Bob) headland is a charming anachronism of a man. a specialist in polar history from the august scott polar research institute at Cambridge, he’s tall, bombastic and possesses a wit as sharp as the katabatic winds. But, you’ll quickly find his haughty air is all theatre and he loves nothing more than to chat about his vast wealth of polar experience over a whisky or three.

in the true spirit of adventure, when the Quark expeditions-chartered icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov attempted its farthest south by vessel, Bob led a second party by zodiac, which furthered the record. “it took almost 100 years to break Fridtjof nansen’s record, so i wanted to really drive it home. Magnificent seaman as [nansen] was, i think it’s about time an englishman reclaimed that one!”

S mall-ship, adventure and expedition cruise lines pride themselves on environmental and social responsibility, but ethical travel goes far beyond planting trees and writing cheques.

giving backan activity almost all adventure cruise operators embark on is delivering much-needed supplies to the remote communities they visit.

unfortunately, some island and isolated villages are beyond the end of the supply chain when it comes to educational, medical and staple supplies. in papua new guinea, for example, school and first-aid supplies are often exhausted long before they reach their intended destination. Cruise lines play an important role in delivering books, stationery and simple medicines directly to these outlying communities.

to circumvent bureaucracy, passengers are asked to bring donations in their spare luggage. these are then pooled and delivered at pre-arranged locations during the cruise. it is often a source of great satisfaction for passengers to see their donations go to teachers and students who often have to share pencils and textbooks as part of their daily routine. at first-aid posts, simple items such as paracetamol, disinfectant and fresh bandages are gratefully received.

on a larger scale, orion expedition Cruises’ corporate and passenger support is helping to rebuild a sepik village schoolhouse destroyed during a storm.

ask your cruise company about its aid projects and make sure you have stocks to contribute.

Carbon offsetsemission offset programs are sometimes contentious and have come under criticism for ‘being seen to be green’ rather than delivering tangible results.

Cruise companies, large and small, are contributing to these offset programs, which usually involve reforestation, alternative energy programs and carbon capture.

More visible activities include installation of solar panels and wind turbine generators, which galapagos operator, ecoventura, has embarked upon.

tourism and the preservation of Culturein a world increasingly driven by market economies and materialistic ideals, responsible tourism can help preserve endangered cultures.

We can all recall the paternalistic traits of last century: quaint, ‘island’ carvings from the pacific and tourist trap trinkets stamped ‘Made in China’, all at the expense of the original cultures they portray.

today, travellers are more discerning and critical of bogus souvenirs and fake artifacts. Fussy travellers are demanding genuine items, crafted by authentic artisans using traditional materials and methods. this intolerance for cheap copies is having a healthy impact on local industries that are producing valuable items such as paintings, sculptures and jewellery.

dances and performances by native troupes are much sought after in adventure cruise travel. authenticity is expected and in many places around the world indigenous peoples are reviving and maintaining waning practices thanks to the demand from small-ship travellers.

examples include the marginalised inuit cultures of siberia, america’s First nation people, the pacific islanders and the many cultures throughout south-east asia.

tips: some Australian flag-bearers with programs in place include: Coral Princess Cruises, Aurora expeditions, Orion expedition Cruises and Captain Cook Cruises (Fiji).

showman Captain Frank Hurley and modest sir Hubert Wilkins both shared a dream of documenting life in difficult and sometimes life-threatening situations. the two men lived almost parallel lives and

today continue to be a source of inspiration for people’s own travels.

Captain ‘Frank’ Hurley oBe James Francis (Frank) Hurley was born in Glebe, sydney on october 15, 1885 and showed an early interest in photography, joining a local postcard company in 1905, a trade he would later fall back on.

Hurley joined the 1911 australasian antarctic expedition of douglas Mawson as photographer and upon his return in 1914 set out again with ernest shackleton on his now-legendary imperial trans-antarctic expedition that became marooned in the ice of the Weddel sea. When the survivors finally abandoned ship, Hurley fought with shackleton to retain his precious glass plate negatives, arguing that they would be needed to tell the story – should they survive or not. His famous documentary film south is the result.

Hurley was a showman who made full use of the available technology and travelled widely to exhibit his films. some of his methods were controversial, but nevertheless, he received critical acclaim and commercial success for his adventurous exploits, including the sensational Pearls and

savages filmed during his two extensive trips into Papua new Guinea in primitive floatplanes between 1920 and 1923.

Hurley clashed with the new wave of daring filmmakers who saw him as old-fashioned and eccentric, but he continued to produce everything from government documentaries to landscapes. a self-styled loner, he retained the title of Captain to enhance his profile until he died in sydney in 1962.

sir George Hubert Wilkins MC (and Bar)Born near adelaide in 1888, George Hubert Wilkins was the youngest of a large pioneering rural family and, disheartened by the harsh farm life, set out for sydney, then england, to find his fortune. By 1912, he was on the front line, filming the Balkan War.

From that moment on, Wilkins’ life was one of almost non-stop adventure, exploration and discovery. after returning from a controversial arctic expedition, he worked under Hurley in the trenches of World War i, often photographing forward of enemy lines and having many narrow escapes. australian Commander General sir John Monash described him as the bravest man he had ever seen. Wilkins was awarded the Military Cross and Bar.

Wilkins returned to exploration and aviation, making numerous daring and groundbreaking flights at both ends of the earth. He also spent many months living with un-contacted tribes of aborigines while under assignment from the British Museum. For this and his other work, he was knighted by King George V in 1928.

His collaboration with media magnate randolph Hearst led him to travel around the world on the German airship Graf Zeppelin, attempt to take an old Us submarine under the ice to the north Pole and make yet more trips to the antarctic with his friend and benefactor, lincoln ellsworth.

a man of enormous integrity and honour, Wilkins’ lack of fame was described by one contemporary as a result of “his aggressive modesty”. He died quietly and suddenly of heart failure in his hotel room in 1958 and his ashes were scattered at the north Pole by Us submariners as a mark of respect.

Siberia

n A small-ship adventure or expedition cruise is not a regular cruise. Schedules can and often do change from day to day depending on weather and opportunities. You need to be a ‘go with the flow’ sort of person with a natural curiosity about the world.

n The standard advice is to choose a destination first, then select a ship that suits your taste and budget. Are you used to the finer things like hotel-style cabins and silver service? Or are you happy as long as the bed is comfortable and clean and there’s plenty of food? Ask your travel agent lots of questions.

n Once you’ve made your choice, pay attention to the suggested packing list. This has been refined after a lot of experience. For example, are gumboots and parka supplied? Take lots of UV protection, especially for the tropics: wide-brim hat, sunscreen, long sleeves and deck shoes.

n Choose camera equipment and accessories carefully. The new wave of compact digital cameras are very versatile, but often fragile and moisture sensitive. Even if you don’t intend to dive or snorkel, a waterproof housing or splash-resistant camera is sensible.

n Small-ship travellers are often passionate or even expert about their destinations. Swot up on your destination’s history, ecology and culture so you can join the lively conversation and ask plenty of informed questions.

Tip: Check with your doctor for any immunisations you might need before your trip or any medication you can take to help with potential tummy bugs and infections.

My first adventure

Going on your first expedition cruise need not be a daunting affair. Here’s a quick
