A DREAM written down with a date becomes a GOAL. A goal broken down into steps becomes a PLAN.

A plan backed by ACTION becomes REALITY.

This is what I see when I think of the Network in Aging.

For the members who don’t quite know who I am I would like to introduce myself as the new President of the Network in Aging.

For the past 30 years I have worked in the field of aging in some capacity or another making this my field of expertise. Advocating for nearly seventeen years on both a state and national level I worked alongside many organizations dedicated to the goal of

improving and keeping services in place for our elderly. I served as a delegate on the 2005 White House Conference on Aging representing Congressman Thomas Reynolds Western New York district. As delegates we were influential in developing new changes that would impact our nation’s elderly. This was my most moving experience.

Joining the Network in Aging and serving on the Board of Directors back in 2011 gave me a whole new perspective to what this organization is all about. I got my feet wet by joining the Education Committee, soon after I was asked to co-chair. When asked to serve as Secretary of the Network I jumped in whole hardly and was up for the task. I served on the Strategic Planning Committee this past year and really got a feel for the expansive history this organization has and why we do what we do. I encourage any member to get involved with the Network and reap the benefits of friendship, networking and education.

This organization thrives with the leadership of our hard working Board of Directors and Committee members solely dedicated our mission. We recently launched a new Facebook page, be sure to ‘Like Us’. Coming soon is ‘LinkedIn’ and the social media exposure is growing. Welcome to our new members.

Membership has grown to a current 385 members, 114 member agencies and 43 individual, student and retirees. The Network with the Network events have become a wonderful way to meet your peers by drawing in members for a fun and educational event. Please join the Network in Aging on January 22nd for ‘Cruise in for a Classic Time’ at the Pierce Arrow Museum. The event includes a guided tour, hors d’oeuvres and open bar. The event is open to guests 21 or older. See our website for additional information and registration. Thank-you to our sponsors: Harris Beach PLLC Attorneys at Law and Laping, Surdej Associates, LLC, and thanks to our dessert table courtesy of People Inc., Univera Healthcare, and Touching Hearts at home. This year our honorary charity will be: Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight.

I am proud to serve as the new President and thank the Network in Aging board of directors for their vote of confidence electing me to this position.

Let our New Year’s resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word. Happy New Year!!

UB School of Social Work to begin a new online Doctor of Social Work degree program

The University at Buffalo School of Social Work (UBSSW) will launch a part-time, fully online, three-year Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree program beginning in the fall of 2019. The 39-credit DSW program builds on the strengths of the school’s trauma-informed and human rights per-spective, and is aimed at experienced social workers with a desire to advance their professional practice. DSW stu-dents will have the opportunity to build knowledge and learn to more effectively incorporate these concepts into the implementation and evaluation of evidence-based treatments with vulnerable populations.

Nationwide, only 15 schools currently offer a DSW. The UBSSW is the first SUNY and first in the region to offer this program. The DSW is the latest addition to a suite of

graduate-level degree and dual-degree programs offered at UB, and is the school’s second doctoral program.

As a part-time, fully online program that is accessible to students regardless of geographic location, the DSW cap-italizes on the latest digital technologies to innovate social work education and practice. The program is an ideal fit for social work practitioners interested in becoming lead-ers in the field and advancing their skills in the practice setting, according to Dr. Louanne Bakk, PhD, the DSW program director.

DSW program application requirements include a Mas-ter of Social Work (MSW) degree and a minimum of two years post-MSW direct practice experience. Interested individuals can refer to a complete list of the program’s prerequisites and apply online at http://socialwork.buffa-lo.edu/education/dsw-online.html.

FAMILY CHOICE OF NEW YORK

HOSPICE

Frustration, exhaustion, anxiety—these words are nothing new to anyone who cares for peo-ple facing a life-limiting illness. They are not new to care providers because these words (and so many more like them) give voice to emotions that patients, their families, and loved ones often feel and experience on a dai-ly basis. As they simultaneously try to wrap their brains around a fear-filled prognosis, and a life of caregiving, family and friends are often stretched beyond their limits.

Dying of a cancer that had progressed past treatment, Elsa wanted nothing more than comfort and ease for herself and for those she loved. She and her husband Jim were to-gether for over 50 years. He struggled with the stress and strain of being a caregiver; he struggled with caring for a woman who had completely changed from the wife he knew and loved for so long; he struggled with how to maintain his role as the patriarch of his family; and he struggled with all the logistics already taxing his exhausted mind.

When Jim’s Spiritual Care Counselor from his Hospice Team called on him, he said, “thanks, but no thanks.” It was just too much—one

more person coming and going, one more visit to keep on track of, one more thing to try to hold in his mind. A couple weeks later, I called to check in, and at the urging of Elsa’s nurse, Jim consented to a quick visit.

After that visit, Jim remarked that, for the first time in weeks he had finally caught his breath. Plans were underway, and many burdens that were weighing him down were much lighter. By the time Elsa passed, the spiritual care that they received helped them process what they were experiencing. Instead of anxiety, they both found solace and catharsis in the last chapter of Elsa’s life.

So often, we focus on physical/medical needs. And because of all the baggage that can come with religion, spiritual care becomes an afterthought. And it’s in those moments, however, when a care team can provide care to a person in their entirety, that we can truly transform suffering into solace.

– Written by Rabbi Adam Scheldt, Director of Spiritual Care, Hospice Buffalo

For more than a decade, Independent Health’s Medicare Family Choice® HMO-SNP plan has been providing an extra level of care and support to residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Western New York.

Members enrolled in this special needs plan receive regular visits from specially-trained nurse practitioners/physician assistants, who are affiliated with Family Choice of New York and on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Their responsibilities include:

• Working in collaboration with the member’s physicians and the nursing facility’s staff to identify potential problems before they become serious.

• Minimizing unnecessary and disruptive emergency room visits and hospital stays whenever it’s safe and appropriate.

• Keeping in close contact with the member’s family, making sure they are involved in the care-planning process and bringing them peace of mind in knowing that their loved one’s quality of life is being maintained at the highest level possible.

• Open enrollment is year-round

• You don’t have to be a current Independent Health member to qualify for the plan

THE MCGUIRE GROUP

The McGuire Group is pleased to introduce our Complex Medical Care Unit, CMCU, located at Garden Gate Health Care Facility in Cheektowaga. This specialized unit provides patients with noninvasive monitoring of their complex medical and cardiac conditions through state-of-the-art telemetry. This includes the ability to monitor essential vital signs in real-time enabling physicians to intervene immediately should a serious medical situation develop. The result is improved outcomes and avoidance of unnecessary hospital readmissions.

Every patient admitted to the unit is outfitted with a portable wifi/cellular cardiac monitor, which registers the real-time data 24 hours a day and provides immediate alerts to any change in a condition.

The CMCU is also equipped with telemedicine technology which allows doctors and multiple other parties, including family members, to be involved in the real-time care of a patient via electronic communication.

Specialists from Buffalo Medical Group oversee all the medical care on the CMCU, and all of the nurses are certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), intravenous therapy and medication administration, and cardiac telemetry monitoring.

While on the unit, patients rehab under the direction of experts trained in every aspect of healing. This full spectrum of care consistently earns Garden Gate outstanding ratings with the state and federal governments.

Bringing Clarity to MedicareChoosing a Medicare Plan can be confusing. There are so many choices. How do you know which plan is best for you? Call the Clarity Group!

What is the Clarity Group? The Clarity Group is an insurance agency that specializes in Medicare plans. The Clarity Group was founded by Sally Stier in March of 2017, originally representing just one company. In 2018, Lisa Giancarlo and Karen Olson became partners in the business. The three partners have over 40 years combined experience working with Medicare insurance. The group has 15 licensed agents covering all areas of WNY. The agency now offers plans from multiple local and national carriers.

Choosing the right plan. There are different types of Medicare Plans. Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap, pay after original Medicare Parts A & B. These are usually accompanied by a Medicare Part D Prescription Plan. Another choice is a Medicare Advantage Plan, also known as Part C, which combines hospital, medical and usually

drug coverage into one plan. The Clarity Group can guide you through all these options.

Everyone’s needs are different and no one plan is perfect for everyone. It’s important to check that the plan includes the doctors and hospitals you need, as well as covering your prescriptions. There can be many other factors to consider as well, such as how healthy you are. Do you want a low monthly premium or would you rather pay more upfront to avoid co-pays later on. What if you travel? Do you want a fitness membership, dental, vision or hearing benefits? The Clarity Group will review your current plan, look up doctors and prescriptions and evaluate other needs to help you chose the plan that best suits your needs. The Clarity Group represents many local and national carriers, providing you with a one stop shopping experience.

The Clarity Group is located at 5334 Transit Rd in Depew. Agents will also meet with clients in their homes or at numerous events throughout the community. Call 716-393-3437 for an appointment. Learn more about the Clarity Group at www.claritygroupny.com.
