Sleep Apnea Sufferers 7 Times More Likely to Fall Asleep at the Wheel

By Jacques Doueck DDS, Diplomate Academy Clinical Sleep Disorder Disciplines

First the bad news Road safety experts warn that people who suffer from sleep apnea are seven times more likely to fall asleep at the wheel while driving.

But here is the good news too. In the words of Prof Walter McNicholas, director of the pulmonary and sleep disorders unit at St Vincents University Hospital, When treated effectively, sleep apnea is incredibly manageable, so awareness of the signs and early diagnosis is key. Some Scarey Facts: Think about these statistics the next time you are on the road. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 1) 60% of adult drivers about 168 million

people say they have driven a vehicle while feeling drowsy in the past year.

    2) More than one-third, (37% or 103 million people), have actually fallen asleep at the wheel!

    3) In fact, of those who have nodded off, 13% say they have done so at least once a month.

    4) Four percent approximately eleven million drivers admit they have had an

accident or near accident because they dozed off or were too tired to drive.

    5) The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year.

    6) This results in an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries,

Untreated sleep apnea is associated with high levels of sleepiness, which makes driving incredibly dangerous. says Prof McNicholas. In a presentation at the RSA annual safety lecture, the professor cautioned that short rests should not be seen as a cure for tiredness, but as a temporary relief. A 15 to 20-minute sleep will only revive a driver for up to an hour, he said. Motorists are being educated on the impact of tiredness on the risk of collisions. According to researcher Michael Scullin, "It was known already that sleep is beneficial. If we have learned anything from the previous few years, its that we can all make real changes to improve road safety. So this week, consider what you can do to make our roads safe for you and your family. If you snore and are drowsy during the day oral appliances have been effective for many of your friends and neighbors. This could be the answer to feeling refreshed and helping your family sleep better too. Call our office for how we can help.

    TWICE HELPFUL ADVICE

Once, two young men traveled to visit Rabbi Shmuel of Lubavitch, the Rebbe Maharash. They both wished to speak with him on the subject of how better to serve G-d. One young man was very learned, and the other, while not a very learned man, possessed a simple, yet pure faith in G-d.

The first man entered the study of the Rebbe for yechidut [a private audience]. He approached the Rebbe and asked him how he could improve his G-dly service, especially in the area of prayer. The Rebbe Maharash told the man to always hold a prayer book when he prayed, and that he should look at every word while praying. The young man told the Rebbe that he felt he could concentrate better when he pulled his tallit over his head, closed his eyes and prayed.

The Rebbe exclaimed, Fool! Are you going to say Haleluka [a sequence of Psalms in the morning prayers] on a beam? The young man left the Rebbe thoroughly confused. What could the Rebbe have meant by suggestion that he prayed on a beam?

The young man asked some of the elder chasidim if they could decipher the meaning of the words, but they were unable to help him. After pondering the matter for a few hours, the young man suddenly realized to what the Rebbe had been referring. He remembered that once, while praying, he noticed a beam that ran the entire length of the synagogue. The young man decided to walk the entire length of the beam while saying the Haleluka prayer. He wanted to see if he could begin the prayer at the beginning of the beam, and reach the end of the beam at the conclusion of the prayer. After doing so, he understood what

the Rebbe meant; his concentration during prayer would be greatly improved by using a prayer book for every word.

When the second man entered, the Rebbe told him that at every opportunity he should learn the complete Tanach[the books of the Torah, Prophets, and Hagiography]. He should study it in Yiddish translation, in order that he should be able to comprehend fully what he was reading. The Rebbe emphasized that he should utilize as much free time as possible in this study, such as while journeying on business trips and even between customers. The man took this upon himself, and devoted as much free time as possible to learning Tanach in Yiddish.

One winter, the man went away on a business trip, and as usual, spent every free moment studying the Tanach. He returned home a few days later after his business had been completed. After greeting his wife, he looked in on his child peacefully sleeping in his bed. Begin that it was a freezing, cold night, the father placed his heavy cloak which he had just removed on the sleeping form of his child, in order to keep the child warm. He then proceeded to discuss the various details of his trip with his wife. After they finished their conversation, they went to check on the baby. Upon doing so, they realized that the child was not breathing. He had suffocated under the heavy cloak!

The father shook the child back and forth, hoping to start the child breathing again, but to no avail. The wife ran to get a doctor. When she returned home, an amazing sight met her eyes. There was her husband sitting and playing with their child, as if nothing had happened. How could her husband, who was by no means a doctor, revive their child? When she inquired as to how he had done this, he told her about a portion of Tanach that he had learned while on his trip. It told about the prophet Elisha, and how Elisha revived a dead child by laying on top of him and breathing into his mouth.* So this man, with his pure and complete faith, figured that if this worked for Elisha it would work for him, too.

All those who knew the man and knew of his conversation with the Rebbe Maharash, realized the meaning of the Rebbes instructions. It became clear that this miracle came about in the merit of his following the Rebbes directive to constantly study Tanach, and also in the merit of his unwavering faith in G-d.

    HANUKAHHHHAAAANNNNUUUKKKKAAAAHHH

THE KEDUSHA OF CHANUKAHKKIn the household of the tzaddik, Reb Dovid of Tolna, hadlokas haneirois was a special event. His chassidim would gather excitedly in his house to take part in the lightingof his golden menora, which was an elaborate piece of artistic craftsmanship. One year, on the rst night of Chanuka, when the tzaddik was ready to light it, he turned to one of his chassidim and said, "Your wife is short, isn't she? When you want to speak to her, what do you do? Do you bend over towards her, or does she raise herself up to your height?" Without waiting for an answer, he recited theberachos and lit the menora. Needless to say, the chossid and all those present were very puzzled.

During this time, Reb Dovid's great nephew, the tzaddik, Reb Mordechai Dov of Hornisteipol, was staying at his home, and seeing the confusion of the chassidim, he explained: The Gemara says that "The Shechina does not descend lower than ten tefachim from the ground." However, there is an exception to this rule, for the Chanuka menora is ideally required to be lower than ten tefachim, and it brings the Shechina itself here below. Reb Mordechai concluded by quoting from the AriZalthat this is the deeper meaning of the words of the Gemara, 'If your wife is short, you should bend over and whisper to her.'

The following evening, at the time of hadlokas haneiros, Reb Dovid again made some puzzling comment to one of his chassidim. Immediately, though he had not been told of the previous night's explanation, he turned to Reb Mordechai and said, "This time, you will not understand as you did yesterday!"

One Chanuka, a group of chassidim traveled to see the Chozeh of Lublin. One of them handed the Rebbe a pan on which his friend's name was written, and when the tzaddik looked at the note, he spat. Later the same evening, the chossid

decided to try giving the note again. This time, as soon as the tzaddik saw it, he said, "This man illuminates all the worlds!" He then added, "When I rst saw the pan, that man was playing cards; this time he is lighting his menora."

    (682 ' )

After kindling the Chanukah licht, the Rebbe Rashab would sit near them for half an hour and learn, though at a slight distance, in order not to benet from its light. He would learn Gemara, wherever he was holding in his learning of Shas.

The Rebbe explained that this practice highlights the special connection of Torah to light, and is a lesson for everyone Chanukah is a time to increase one's learning. Furthermore, since the Yevanim wished to prevent us from studying Torah, we increase our study.

    (816 ' " " " , ' )

THE WAR OF THE YEVANIMThe goal of the Yevanim was lehashkicham torasecha ulehaaviram meichukei retzonecha ("to make them forget Your Torah and transgress the decrees of Your will"). As the Medrash says, the Yevanim demanded the Yidden write that they have no part in HaShem. This was a war against HaShem."Let them study Torah," said the Greeks. "Let them practice the mitzvos, mishpatim, and eiduyos, but they must not mention that the Torah is HaShem's and that the mitzvos are the decrees of His will. Torah and mitzvos must be severed from HaShem."

    ( ' )

In a sicha (" "), the Rebbe explained how the goal of the Yevanim and the misyavnim was to remove the separation that exists between Yidden and goyim, and to educate children to be similar to the other nations. This is more severe than placing decrees against the observance of Torah and mitzvos, because its effect remains even after the decree is over. It begins with something 'small', through 'lighting up' the way for a child with 'oil' that is contaminated with goyishkeit, claiming that it produces the same light. When one educates children improperly, drawing 'light' from a source which is not tahor, this leads a child to become a Misyaven (").

The lesson from Chanuka is: when lighting up Yiddishe homes, one must use only pure Yiddishe light, uncontaminated by any goyishkeit. By doing so, with mesirus

CELEBRATAA ING CHANUKAHKKSince the primary nes of Chanukah was a ruchniyusdike one, annulling the decrees of the Yevanim against the observance of Yiddishkeit and the offering of t korbanos,we commemorate it in a ruchniyusdike way, by saying Hallel and praising HaShem. However, it is also customary to make one's seudos ner during Chanukah in order to recall the nes of winning the war and to commemorate the completion of theMishkan on chaf-hei Kislev. During such a seuda, one should sing praises to HaShemfor His nissim, thus making it a seudas mitzva.

    ( " " ' " ")

It was customary for the Tzemach Tzedek, as it had been for the Alter Rebbe and the Mitteler Rebbe before him, to hold a gathering on one of the evenings of Chanukah with his family, including his daughters-in-law. This was called a latkes ovent, a latkes evening. At this gathering the Rebbes would tell stories, some of which were repeated year after year. The Rebbe Rashab would also set aside time during Chanukah to speak to the children.

CONSIDER THIS! J Why is it specically the lights of Chanukah that draws the Shhechinah belolooww ten

    tefachim?

J How do we distinguish between pure Yiddishe light aand contaminatedgoyishkeit when they both incorporate the study of Torah aand the observanceof mitzvos?

YISSACHAR-ZEVULUN PARTRR NERSHIPIf one supports someone who studies Torah to acquire the zechus and that person does not learn lishma, does the supporter have the merit of lishma or not?

J The possuk says (Devorim 33:18) "Rejoice, Zevulun, in your departure, and Yissachar, in your tents.Chazal explain1 that these two parts of the possuk, that of Zevulun and that of Yissachar, are connected. The members of shevet Zevulun would deal in business and support tthe members of shevet Yissachar, enabling them to study Torah full time. Since the t possuk isaddressed to Zevulun (And to Zevulun he said), Chazal derive that the Torah of Yissachar is accredited to Zevulun. Thus, a partnership between a businessman and a talmid chacham is known as a 'Yissachar-Zevulun partnership'.

J When one is unable to dedicate himself solely to the study of Torah, and must sufce with designated times for Torah, day and night, the Alter Rebbe prescribes a correct mind frameduring the working hours. Shulchan Aruch2 says, "[when not learning, the person] shouldinvolve himself in business in order to be able to support those who solely study the halachos of the Torah and their sources. This way, it is as if he himself is learning and their study will be attributed to him.

J Poskim3 write that while one should not contribute more than a fth of his belongings totzedaka, supporting those who study Torah is not included in this restriction, since the Torahstudy is attributed to the donor and is not just tzedaka.

J Poskim4 add that when faced with a choice of fully supporting one talmid chacham or partially supporting several individuals, the rst option is preferable. This way, there is at least one undisturbed learning taking place.

J Even if the learner does not study lishma, the supporter still has the merit of Torah study. As far as the extra merit of Torah lishma there is a machlokes. Some Poskim5 claim that since the partnership transfers the zechus of the learning to the supporter, if the learning was not done lishma, the Torah study earned by the donor will also lack that merit. Yet, since he did his shareof giving the money lishma, he is considered as having tried to learn lishma but was unable to due to reasons beyond his control. However, the majority of Poskim6 maintain that the supporter is considered to have learned Torah lishma since he gave the money lishma.

J The Rebbe highlights7 the greatness of "adopting" a Torah learner who will learn full time as a supreme form of tzedaka, and writes that it is even more benecial for the neshama of a niftar than the writing of a Sefer Torah.

He had a store in Beshenkovitz that his wife ran, while he would accompany Reb Hillel on all his travels.

    JJJ

On one of their journeys, they arrived at the estate of a big poritz. They stayed with a local Jew. The manager of the estate was also Jewish and came to greet Reb Hillel, but as soon asReb Hillel saw that he was dressed like the squires with a trimmed beard, Reb Hillel lowered his eyes, answered him coldly, and bade him farewell without conversing.

Afterwards, Reb Hillel sent Reb Sholom to visit the home of the manager, adding, Do not leave until he gives you a certain sum for tzedaka. Reb Sholom was quite surprised and reminded Reb Hillel of the managers surly face when he left. Reb Hillel just repeated theinstruction without any explanation.

When Reb Sholom came to the house, he saw the man pacing back and forth very perturbed. He did not even notice Reb Sholom. He was talking to himself. He surely knew that I have the ability to grind him like a pebble and to turn him into absolute nothing. And he nevertheless was not impressed by me. Indeed, this is a true Guteh Yid" (a tzaddik). When the manager calmed down a bit, he noticed Reb Sholom and asked him what he wanted. Reb Sholom replied that he needs a certain amount for tzedaka. The man did not hesitate and he gave him the desired amount.

Time passed and Reb Hillel again came to the town. They were greeted by a changed man. As time passed, the manager became a chossid.

    JJJ

On another journey, Reb Sholom and Reb Hillel visited a village in White Russia. Reb Sholom started to daven maariv andv davened until day break. There was no way he was going to go to sleep, as it was already time to prepare for shacharis! And so, he started with the preparations for davening shacharis. After about an hour he started davening, and by minchatime was only up to Shema Yisroel. When the villager who owned the inn came to daven mincha, he saw Reb Sholom still in middle of shacharis. The villager said in surprise, What is with this Jew! He davens all night and all day! He must have a very blocked head.

Reb Hillel related, The three years that Reb Sholom learned Chassidus with me did not affect him as much as the words of that villager

A REQUEST FOR CHANUKAH KK GELTLLOn the 6th night of Chanukah, 5747, the Rebbe suddenly asked Reb Leibel Groner whether RebYossel HaKohen Gutnik was present at the recent farbrengen. The Rebbe immediately continued:"zog im der possuk (tell him the possuk).

Reb Leibel was mystied. To which possuk was the Rebbe referring? The Rebbe explained, I am referring to the possuk ten li hanefesh (give me your soul). Tell him I want a detailed list of hisshiurei Torah!

The next day, after Reb Yossel handed in a summary of his shiurim, the Rebbe called him and his father Reb Chaim, for a special yechidus in Gan Eden Hatachton. When they entered, the Rebbe lifted both hands in the air, and said with a smile, We live in a strange age, when a Yisroel asks for Chanukah gelt from at Kohen

The Rebbe turned to Reb Chaim and said, I want you to publish a book of all your pilpulim andtalks.

Then to Reb Yossel, From you I also want Chanukah gelt. I want you to increase in your shiurim.
