This can feel like a glum time of year – after

Christmas, before the spring – which might

explain why the film industry does its best to

cheer us all up with the awards season in

February. Say what you will about the Baftas and Oscars, there is still something compelling

about the display of success and failure, hope

and disappointment, parading along the red

carpet. Looking on the nominee lists, I have

noticed ‘Les Miserables’ included in many of

them. If any readers see the film, I would love

you to email me a film review and lets have our

own reviews!

February also brings Valentines Day, a day to

celebrate with your loved ones sending gifts,

sweets and flowers. What ever you choose to

do make it special for your loved one!

Anyone who is interested in advertising in your

local Arrow, the smallest advert starts at £20 a

month. Please get in touch.

The deadline for March issue is

Thursday 14th February.

Enjoy the read!

Axholme Academy News Letter Key Stage 3 Girls

I was asked to complete a report about the KS3 Girls performance in their Humberside Table Tennis

match on Friday 7th December. Between attending the event and writing this report the same girls have

been involved in becoming North Lincolnshire Badminton and Basketball Champions too! Three Year 8

Girls have been imperative in all 3 victories, these are Sinead Bramhill, Georgia Green and Courtney Wills.

Alongside Lauren Hall and Bethany Connor they have managed to become County and Regional Champi-

ons in different sports within the space of a week.

On Friday 7th December 2012, Sinead, Georgia, Courtney and Bethany travelled to St Mary’s College in

Hull to try and claim the Humberside title. They represented the county of North Lincolnshire and faced

St Mary’s College. They won their match in an impressive 7 games to 1 victory to become Under 13 Girl’s

Humberside County Champions in the Humber School Games and brought their trophy back to The

Axholme Academy. They will go on to the Zonal Finals in Billingham on Saturday 19th January to repre-

sent Humberside in the next round.

On Wednesday 12th December our KS3 Girls travelled to Melior Community College to take part in the

North Lincolnshire Schools Basketball Tournament. They won all of their matches and were declared

champions. This means that they will go on to represent North Lincolnshire in the Humber School Games

round later in 2013.

On Thursday 13th December, Sinead, Georgia, Courtney and Lauren travelled to Brumby to take part in

the KS3 Girls Badminton finals. They had previously wont heir group matches in a phenomenal victory

over 3 schools, winning every single game they played. In the finals they faced SJN A and B as well as South

Axholme. They were victorious in all of their matches along meaning they were declared North Lincoln-

shire Champions. They will represent the County on Thursday 7th February at Hull Badminton Centre at

the Humber School Games.

As an Academy we are extremely proud of what the girls have achieved in such a short space of time and

wish them the best of luck in their future matches. If you would like to keep up to date with our sports

results and find out of the girls progress them please follow us on twitter @AxholmeAcademy.

What are you giving up?

I wonder how those New Year resolutions are going? I decided not to make any as I knew they

would be forgotten very quickly. Now the decorations and the crib have been put away and it’s

soon time to move on to the next major Christian Festival – Easter.

Before Easter, there are 40 days of ‘Lent’ that begin with Ash Wednesday on 13th February. It’s easy

to remember when Lent begins as it is always the day after Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday). Tradi-

tionally, many people ‘give up’ something for Lent – and that something is usually food or drink.

With a definite end in sight and the prospect of chocolate on Easter Day, giving up something for

Lent is much easier than keeping a New Year resolution.

I love Cadbury’s ‘Wispa’. On 1st January, I could not resolve to never buy another one for a whole

year. However I think to be ‘Wispaless’ for six weeks is possible and will please my Doctor! I will

put the money saved in a jam jar during Lent and give it away to my favourite charity at Easter. It

won’t be a lot of money – maybe £3 at most. If we all do something similar, lots of charities will

benefit.

Lent is a time to prepare ourselves for the wonderful celebration of Easter – the resurrection of

Jesus Christ from the dead. Giving up something we love for Jesus’ sake, even if it is only a Wispa

bar, is a good start!

You would think that there would be very little on the culinary scene

that could cause much of a stir on the Isle of Axholme, so you may be

surprised to find that Epworth has been buzzing since Christmas with

the news that Ben Edwards is coming to town!

Ben, known by many of you as the award winning chef lately at the Red Lion at Crowle and the

Reindeeer Inn at Sandtoft; has formed a partnership with Trish Kingham at Kingham’s Bistro.

Trish is delighted and said “Ben is the only chef that I would have considered for the Bistro as he

and I have the same values and ethics where freshly cooked and locally sourced food is concerned,

but even more importantly Ben is a truly superb chef and I love his food”

2012 had been a difficult year for Trish and she was unsure what direction to take in her business.

“I knew I needed to have a strong front of house presence if I was to continue cooking. I had not

occurred to me that I might do it myself until a friend suggested it. Once I thought about it I

realised I would very much enjoy being front of house as long as I could find a really good chef and

of course Ben was always my first choice. It was either luck or fate that Ben was available at the

time. I knew Ben wanted his own restaurant in Epworth and so a partnership was the idea answer

for both of us.”

This will mean a whole change of menu for the Bistro with Ben adding Caribbean favourites such as

his famous jerk chicken. Ben would like to extend his repertoire of Caribbean food and is planning

to have some Sunday nights as Caribbean nights as well as some Caribbean dishes on the menu.

The Dinner Club theme nights that have been so popular at the Bistro will also be resumed on Wednesday evenings.

So, a very exciting gastronomic future for Epworth & the Isle of Axholme!
