Purpose of Today’s Session
o Build a shared understanding of Crow Island’s space needs and how the District plans to address them
o Provide an opportunity to productively engage in conversations with administrators, parents, and neighbors
o Inform the decision-making process with perspectives from constituents, as Administration will gather feedback and share with the School Board prior to temporary classroom vote at the March 15, 2016, meeting
Educational Programming Crow Island Students... o have access to all District
instructional programming, specials, and services
o are placed in classrooms (sections) using the District’s class size guidelines
o benefit from an extremely supportive community, quality teaching staff, and a child-centered environment/facility
Crow Island Space Constraints o 21 Classrooms (sections) due to
a higher enrollment at 1st grade
o Commitment to Specials Instructional Time and Response to Intervention o Necessitates additional specials sections o Requires additional small group
instructional spaces
o Every available space is used for students and staff o ex. converted computer lab to 3 small
instructional spaces; moved D36 Publications to Washburne (summer 2015)

Why Short-Term Solutions? o Immediate space relief &
flexibility for our students
o Enrollment projected to decrease o Bump attributed to current 1st grade o Overall enrollment = slight decrease
(2015-2018) from 384 to 368 students
o Time for further study on other solutions such as… o Self-correction of enrollment o Construction consideration at Crow Island o Boundary review for all elementary schools
o Potential Kindergarten Day Extension Impact (2017)
How does Possible Extended Day Kindergarten Impact this Process?
o Kindergarten Day Study o Evaluating offering an extended day
program for D36 children o School Board set to make decision in
May 2016 for a 2017-2018 implementation; outcome uncertain at this time
o If Offered, Extended Day
Kindergarten... o Requires additional space for extra
sections of Kindergarten and… o D36 would need to determine if
program would be offered at all 3 elementary schools, if approved
What are Temporary Classrooms?
A modular structure installed and maintained with requirements of Illinois School Code in accordance with Village of Winnetka codes
o Two classrooms are housed in one modular structure
o District 36 is considering installing two structures (with a total of four classrooms)
When Might Temporary Classrooms be Installed?
o If approved by the Village and School Board, one structure
housing two classrooms would be installed in summer 2016
o If the Board approves an Extended Day Kindergarten program this spring, a second two-classroom structure might be installed in summer 2017 for the 2017-2018 school year
o All Kindergarten classrooms would remain in the main school building
Temporary Classrooms Amenities
o Exterior painted to complement the school’s color tone
o Professionally landscaped o Include a covered canopy
walkway o Air-conditioned o Equipped with technology
features for students New Trier High School currently has 13 units on site. Crow Island had similar unit in 1980s.
Measures to Support Safety & Security
o Exterior lighting o Entry pads similar to school buildings o Security cameras o Phone system & two-way radios or intercoms o Equipped with sprinklers & fire alarm system
Where would Temporary Classrooms be Installed?
o Southwest corner of Crow
Island building o Furthest removed location from
residential property, adjacent to a wooded area
o Positioning of the unit(s) would not impact pedestrian & vehicle traffic
o D36 would reposition current playground If approved, the structure closest to the
school would be installed in summer 2016 & pending the Board’s Kindergarten decision, the second structure would follow in summer 2017
Installation Plan: *
o If approved, the first unit with two classrooms will be installed during the 2016 summer break.
o Installation and maintenance would be in compliance with the requirements of the Illinois School Code and in accordance with Village of Winnetka ordinances & codes.
o Communication includes proactive communiqué with neighbors on dates, times, and expectations.

o Questions on how the classrooms will be utilized o Request to evaluate other unit placement locations o Input regarding aesthetics (i.e. windows, color

-installation and maintenance -forming a neighborhood committee -working with a landscape architect
