The PTO is making an effort to shorten the bi-monthly bulletin and encourage parents to access our website for additional information so my column will be limited to “Thank You’s” only.

There are many parents that volunteer and are involved at Crow Island that don’t get the accolades for running an event or a committee – please know that every effort put forth by every parent volunteer is greatly appreciated by the PTO and the Crow Island staff!

Some volunteers I’d like to acknowledge:

• Nora Larkin, Heather Bartell and the Staff Appreciation Committee for Staff Appreciation events held in December.

• Jo Gilley, Courtney McDonough, all room parents and additional parent volunteers that assisted with the Community Outreach event on the last day before Winter Break. 400 sack suppers were made and delivered that same day to homeless people in Chicago – it was a powerful message for our kids to receive before the Winter Break.

• The Pioneer Room Open Houses were just held at school. Thank you to Lisa Bandolik, Christine Morse, 3rd grade teacher, Eve Richards and Resource Center Associate, Karen Gullen for getting the room ready and coordinating the logisitcs across all the elementary schools.

• Lastly, thank you to the PTO executive committee for all the behind-the-scenes work/support you give the PTO, staff and children at Crow Island. Thank you to: Vice President Room Parents/President Elect, Barb Brown; VP Programs, Jenn Greenow, VP Communications, Casey Russell, Assistant Communications, Alison Kerekes, Treasurer, Amy Polachek, Assistant Treasurer, Karen Hawkins and Secretary, Linda Anderson.

The Crow Island 2013 Science and Math Expo is Fast Approaching!

*VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!

Our Crow Island students are gearing up for this fun event!! Dates and times are as follows:2nd and 4th Graders - Thursday, February 7th - 1:00 - 2:15 pm

1st and 3rd Graders - Friday, February 8th - 9:30 - 10:45 am

The first graders will be displaying their 100th Day Math Projects at the Expo. All 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders should complete their registration forms and return them to their teachers (deadline is Friday, February 1st).

*Remember, everyone must turn in a form electing whether your child will choose to participate or not! All work on the project is to be completed at home (by the student) and brought in to school the morning of the event. Volunteers will be available to help students unload and carry projects into school at drop off.

We are looking for MANY VOLUNTEERS to help make sure the event runs smoothly! There are several shifts available to help with setup, student check-in or cleanup. Please contact co-chairs Becky Kendall at [email protected] (or by cell: 773-320-8779), or Amara Martini at [email protected] (or by cell: 773-350-2245) to volunteer or if you have any questions.

Box Tops For Education Update

Crow Island will be receiving a check for $658.50 for the BoxTops collected from October 2011 - October 2012.

With that money, the following items were purchased for our teachers and for our math lab:

Student calculatorsBase 10 blocksJudy clocksNumber lines10 framesA book of math activities for 10 framesPlace value flip chartsPlace value demo flip chartEstimation stationShape templatesVariety of games such as:Make 7SetShut the Box24

The teachers are thrilled as these supplies complement their lessons perfectly plus the games are great to have in the classroom for all learning, but also for differentiated learning.

Thanks to all of you who take the time cutting those Box Tops off of all of your cereal boxes, Kleenex, and Ziploc bags, as well as Gogurt and so on. If you want to know more about the other products with Box Tops, please go to their website: www.boxtops4education.com. It is guaranteed to inspire you!

The Box Tops can be put in the giant display in the front hall of the school so keep collecting! Our goal for this year is $1,000.00 and we will need all the help we can get!

4th Grade Book Club

The 4th Grade Book Club program is taking a "Book Group" format this year.

We will be reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This is a fantastic story of appreciating differences and embracing people for who they are. Books will be provided. We will have six meetings starting 1/22 during lunchtime.

We are in need of some parent volunteers. Please contact Brooke Wanzenberg at [email protected] or Laura Cohen at [email protected]. Thank you!
