Series 500™ luminaires

VL500™Wash models:Back by popular demand, the VARI❋LITE VL500™ Wash luminaire is based upon the

Emmy® Award-winning VL5™ Wash luminaire, but with significant design improvements.

This multi-faceted luminaire is available in four models: the VL500, VL500D, VL500A, and VL500

80V. Plus, as an option, all models of the VL500 are available with pastel versions of the standard

colors. The pastel colors offer a softer, “Broadway-type” color palette often used in live theater.

In all models, the innovative DICHRO❋TUNE™ radial color mixing system employs three sets of

16 radially mounted dichroic filters - magenta, blue, and amber – designed to produce smooth,

full spectrum color cross-fades. All models are designed with natural convection cooled lamps

and internally cooled electronics which utilize on-demand low velocity,

low noise micro-fans.

As shipping for the VL500 commenced,

the first units were delivered to Clearwing

Productions in West Allis, WI, to be used on

the 79th Annual Concordia College Christmas Concert in Moorhead, MN.

“The market demand for the VL500 had been tremendous,” stated Vari-Lite

Product Manager George Masek. “We are very excited to see the luminaires

in action during this event as Concordia College has consistently produced

top-notch Holiday concerts.”

“Clearwing Productions, Inc., is honored to be the first to receive the latest

product from Vari-Lite,” stated Aaron Hubbard, Clearwing Lighting Operations

Manager. “Through our direct experiences with the launch of the VL3000™ au-

tomated luminaire, we have come to expect nothing less then the excellence in

engineering and customer service from Vari-Lite and had no doubt that the

VL500 would meet our expectations. Which it has!”

The VARI❋LITE® portion of the lighting rig for the Concordia Christmas Concert

consisted of 32 VL500 Wash luminaires and 8 VL3000 Spot luminaires. The Hol-

iday Spectacular was also taped in HDTV by PBS for television broadcast and

DVD distribution.

Hubbard went on to state, “It’s better than a VL5™ Wash luminaire with faster

head and color speed. There are noticeable intensity increases, especially

through the more saturated color range. The onboard IGBT dimming and

electronics brings this fixture up to the industry standards on power and data

distribution, making it for quick and easy integration into existing rigs.

As a long time fan of the VL5™ Wash luminiare, the VL500 is exactly what

I expected. It’s simply another great fixture from Vari-Lite.”

VL500 Wash Luminaire: The most economical and lightweight version of the

luminaire, the VL500 offers the warm 3200-degree color temperature of the tungsten lamp

source, along with weight and space efficiency.

VL500D Wash Luminaire: This luminaire is most advantageous for those whose

productions have a limited number of dimmer circuits available. It retains a warm, 3200 de-

gree color temperature, and with only a slight increase in weight, provides onboard IGBT dim-

ming without requiring any additional cabling.

VL500A Wash Luminaire: This luminaire is ideal when intensity and punch are im-

portant, or when the higher color temperature of an arc source lamp is desired.

VL500 80V Wash Luminaire: The VL500 80V provides the greatest intensity

of any of the tungsten luminaires in the Series 500 line. The fixture is capable of universal op-

eration, accepting input voltages of 100 to 240 VAC to drive the same 80 volt lamp at any loca-

tion worldwide. The combination of stunning brightness and the patented DICHRO❋TUNE color

system with the convenience of onboard dimming of a tungsten source make the

VL1000™ERSmodels:Functionality meets affordability in the innovative VL1000 ERS, the lighting industry’s first fully

automated ellipsoidal reflector spotlight. This flexible light combines the advantages of the

ellipsoidal reflector spotlight with the versatility of an automated luminaire – at an affordable price.

The VL1000 luminaire is available in several different versions. The shutter model includes

an automated, four-blade shutter mechanism for complete framing control. The iris model in-

cludes a beam size iris for aperture adjustment. And the VL1000 tungsten luminaire offers an

optional internal electronic dimmer. Whether the application calls for a tungsten or arc source,

the VL1000 ERS is ready to perform.

VL1000™ Arc luminaire:

When the production calls for cool color tones and bright, intense light, designers turn to the

VL1000A luminaire. Lighting designers use the VL1000 fixture with shutters to frame objects such

as video screens, monitors or non-symmetrical set pieces. With the automated framing shutters,

light can be projected right to the edge of a sign, screen or scenic element without bleeding over.

The VL1000A luminaire’s flexibility and affordable price make it ideal for budget-conscious

Throughout the lighting design process for

Gypsy, Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher re-

mained steadfast on creating a lighting sys-

tem that would remain true to the time period in which the show is set.

The solution was a system comprised of 75 VARI❋LITE VL1000 arc luminaires,

which allowed Eisenhauer and Fisher amazing flexibility in how the show was

lighted. Front of house, the VL1000 ERS fixtures were used as spotlights with

framing shutters, and overhead, the designers inserted a single piece of

diffusion into the gel holder, converting the arc fixtures into soft wash units.

One of the nicest features of the fixtures is they go beyond any other

achievement in terms of the accuracy, especially with the framing shutters.

For one particular shot that is at least 40 feet and framed down to about a

12-inch square, the fixtures have been right on target every single night.

Another obstacle the VL1000 ERS units helped overcome was that of excessive

fan noise. The set at The Shubert Theatre was essentially a hard surface box

that acted like a speaker for any extraneous noises, and there weren’t enough

soft materials to absorb sound from any automated fixtures or their cooling

fans. Because of the VL1000 ERS’ silent operation, sound emanating from the

luminaires was not an issue.

There are some fixtures you just cannot bring into the theater because the amount

of fan noise just kills the play when people have to speak. With the VL1000 units,

sound wasn’t an issue.

producers who otherwise might not be able to afford automated lighting. Designers can use

the VL1000A fixture as both a wash and a spot luminaire – the functions and features of two

lights for the price of one. A house of worship, for example, can spotlight the speaker, then

soften and change color to highlight the sanctuary and bathe the choir and congregation in vi-

brant color– all with the same VL1000 fixture.

VL1000™ Tungsten luminaire:

Combining the warm color temperature of tungsten lighting with outstanding color control, the

VL1000T luminaire is the right choice for theater, television, film and more. On Broadway, lighting

designers select the VL1000T for its warm, natural skin tones and perfect color rendering. The

quiet operation and convection cooling give the light top billing in installations where noisy fans

can detract from even the most stellar performance. Multi-media producers love the ability to cre-

ate texture, patterns and images using the rotating gobo wheel. And lighting designers

are impressed with the fixture’s repeatability; once the pan, tilt, focus and shutter positions are

programmed, the VL1000 luminaire hits its mark, time after time.


The Philadelphia Convention and Visitor Bureau’s

annual luncheon at the Pennsylvania Convention

Center is the city’s largest hospitality event of

the year. The lighting rig, which included 12 VL1000TS luminaires and two

VL3000 Spot luminaires, provided lighting designer Jason Showers with a

great degree of flexibility and allowed him to overcome various

venue/space obstacles with minimal effort.

Ten of the VL1000 units were used for scenic lighting. The other

two were used as FOH audience specials – key lighting for

video. Using custom gobos in five of the VL1000TS fixtures,

Showers projected theme words of the event onto five gray

scenic flats onstage.

The PCVB wanted to rotate the key words and bring them up at different times, coin-

ciding with certain moments during the presentations. The indexing was critical for all

of the words to line up vertically, which they did without fail. The incredible zoom

range of the fixtures made sizing the words evenly a simple task.

With the other five VL1000 units, Showers washed the scenic flats with

various saturated colors to provide a cohesive look with what was

happening on the cyc upstage.

The fixtures’ shutters enabled Showers to accurately frame

the scenic pieces and not spill upstage. The excellent zoom

enabled Showers to cover the entire 12-foot flat with a very

short, steep throw distance. He couldn't have accomplished

such a clean look with any other fixture.

VL2500™Spot luminaire:With the VL2500 Spot luminaire, Vari-Lite has taken a very popular existing lighting tool – the

VL2000 Spot – and improved upon it. With the new VL2500 Spot luminaire, customers get all of

the popular features they love from the original Series 2000 fixtures, and the added bonus of

CYM color mixing, a coated glass dimmer wheel and a separate dual-blade strobe system, that

provides a smooth, super-fast strobe. Combined with an 11-slot fixed color wheel, the color op-

tions are practically limitless. The VL2500 Spot’s pan and tilt motors are powerful and provide

more torque. Additionally, the beam size iris of the VL2500 Spot operates more quietly.

Some bands lead, others follow. One look at a

live performance by Mana, and it’s easy to see

that the Latino rock band is ahead of the curve.

With a spectacular light show to convey the true, meaningful messages of their

music Mana delivers an all-out assault on the audience’s emotions.

Mana added 16 1200-Watt VL3000 Spot luminaires to the auto-

mated lighting rig, which already consisted of 28 VL2000

Wash luminaires and 16 VL2000 Spot units.

Mana uses only the best equipment, and Vari-Lite is

the best name in automated lighting.

Production manager Javier Barba says the desire to own and use Vari-Lite

luminaires goes even deeper than the ability of the fixtures themselves. The

VARI❋LITE fixtures are a status symbol of prestige. After one demo of the Series

3000 fixtures, Barba was blown away by the intensity and smooth movement of

the fixtures. The VL3000 luminaires allow designers to do things that they just

can’t do with any other light. When the VL3000 Spot luminaires were

added to the lighting rig, the show changed completely.

Some lights hit the market and stay. The Series 3000 fixtures are

here to stay. The lights have everything an LD needs. In a very

output and superior color and beam control. State-of-the-art optics produce a pure, bright light

with no hot spots and minimal drop off from center to edge. For musical performances, the

ultra-fast strobe produces bursts of solid, intense light to match the beat. The light’s output is

consistent over large and small areas. In venues that require lighting a large area from a short

distance, the VL3000 Wash luminaire is the clear choice. When the performance calls for a

combination of spot and wash fixtures, the VL3000 Spot and Wash luminaries work in perfect

Eddie Izzard is a rock and roll showman trapped

in a stand-up comedian’s body. Josh Monroe,

lighting designer for Izzard’s 2003 “Sexie” tour,

refers to the stage and screen star as a “glam rock” comedian. The first two

minutes of Izzard’s show explain why.

Izzard likes a rock and roll entrance. It’s a very ‘David Bowie-like’

spectacular every time he enters or exits the stage. It’s basi-

cally flash and trash that shows off all of the bells and

whistles of the lighting fixtures. There’s no high art to it,

it just whips the audience into a frenzy and lets them

know that Eddie is about to hit the stage.

The show opens with a 90-second sequence that combines the lighting, music

and projection, leading up to Izzard’s grand entrance. To accomplish the look of

controlled chaos, Monroe specified the most powerful VARI❋LITE fixtures avail-

able. The lighting package for the “Sexie” tour included 30 of the Series 3000 lu-

minaires – 18 VL3000 Spot luminaires and 12 VL3000 Wash units.

It’s definitely not your standard touring package for a stand-up

comedian. It’s a lot of lights for a one-man show, and the

VARI❋LITE fixtures are the bulk of what’s lighting the

performance. The lighting is done in a rock and roll

manner – not like a rock and roll concert, but like he’s a

rock and roll personality.

VL3500™Spot luminaire:The VL3500 luminaire is the industry’s most advanced automated luminaire. The extraordinary

shutter system of the VL3500 fixture consists of four shutters on two planes, which can be oper-

ated independently or in unison. The entire mechanism can be rotated in either direction to

allow for even greater creative control. Opposing chamfers and nominal distance between shut-

ter edges allows for a clear, crisp focus on all four blades at once. Combined with the

fixture’s fast, fluid movement and precise repeatability, the ability to create is virtually unlimited.

The VL3500 luminaire matches perfectly with Vari-Lite’s original VL3000 Spot fixtures to provide a

complete 1200W spot package. For applications where silence is critical, the VL3500 luminaire is

also available in the popular “Q” version. No other luminaire can provide the 6-to-1 zoom range in

a silent-running 1200W fixture. Designers now have a pair of fixtures that can satisfy all of their

spot luminaire needs.

“Q”uiet luminaires:For productions where the absence of noise is critical to the performance, the VL3500Q Spot

and VL3000Q Spot and Wash luminaires provide the same powerful capabilities of the original Se-

ries 3000 fixtures while reducing the audible noise output considerably. For theater, television stu-

dios, houses of worship and other sound-sensitive applications, lighting designers now have a

light that limits noise without limiting creative freedom.

Q Series luminaires

VL3500™ Wash luminaire:The VL3500™ Wash luminaire is the newest member of the VARI❋LITE® Series 3000™ family of lumi-

naires. With an output that exceeds 50,000 lumens, as well as varied new options for color and beam

control, this fixture will soon be the standard by which all wash lights are measured.

The VL3500™ Wash luminaire features internal zoomable beam optics with either Fresnel or Buxom options,

an interchangeable front lens system, and an aperture wheel. The fixture provides CYM color mixing,

variable CTO color temperature correction, dual five-position color wheels, a separate dimmer, and an in-

dependent dual blade strobe mechanism.

In conjunction with its zoomable optics system, Vari-Lite introduces the VARI❋BRITE™ mode. From any

zoom position, this mode can be engaged to offer a tight column of remarkably intense light making the

VL3500™ the most versatile wash luminaire on the market.
