Big Pine Loop: 4 MILES The Big Pine Loop is an intermediate/ beginner classic trail that parallels Big Pine Creek, a class one trout stream. The southern portion of the loop is a scenic 2.4 mile single track classic trail. The Big Pine Loop winds through a mix of balsam fir and red pine stands. Scattered amongst these stands are several large and very old ‘legacy trees’, survivors of the big cutover and subsequent fires that occurred during the turn of the 20th century. The northern part of this trail is an easy 1.6 mile two- way classic trail that passes by portions of the Treehaven prescribed fire research area, and ruffed grouse habitat demonstration unit. This loop provides access to the cordwood cabin where trail users can enjoy a fire. Red Oak Loop: 1.35 MILES The Red Oak Loop is a beginner single track classic loop that links the Big Pine Loop and Sugarbush Trail. This trail offers views of a diverse array of forest types including red pine plantations, mixed stands of aspen, red maple, red oak, and a black spruce bog. Many of the towering red pines on this loop were planted by the Kummer-Vallier Family starting in 1955 and are part of the first pine plantations at Treehaven. Sugarbush Trail: 1.1 MILES The Sugarbush Trail is a two-way beginner classic trail that connects the West Gate Trailhead with the rest of Treehaven’s ski trails. This trail passes through a stand of sugar maples that Treehaven taps to produce maple syrup. The Sugarbush Trail also goes by a fenced deer exclosure established in 1995 to study the long- term impacts of deer browse on forest vegetation. Skiing the Sugarbush Trail out and back results in a 2.2 mile ski. Cross Country Skiing Dragonfly Loop: 0.75 MILES This single-track classic trail winds through a mature aspen stand and a red pine plantation. The trail is well suited to beginners and offers a scenic view of Dragonfly Pond. Big Pine Cutoff: 0.5 MILES The Big Pine Cutoff Loop is an expert level single track classic trail with a steep climb that traverses through a scenic northern hardwood and hemlock stand before descending back to the pines of the Big Pine Loop. Skiers looking for a challenge should give this trail a try. Skiing the Big Pine Loop via the Big Pine Cutoff Trail results in a 3.7 mile loop. Treehaven’s cross country ski trails are groomed for classic skiing only. Our trails may be one-way or two-way. Please follow posted ski directions to prevent potential collisions. • Please do not walk or snowshoe on groomed ski trails, this damages the trail surface. • No Pets: Pets disrupt wildlife, damage ski trails, and create safety issues for other visitors.
