A Case for Smiles: January’s Mission of the Month Looks Ahead to April

Community Reformed’s Quilt Group is hav-

ing a Pillowcase Party, and you’re invited

to help.

On Saturday, April 2,the Sew and Reap Quilt

Group is hosting a sew-ing party to makecheery pillowcases forthe children in the oncol-ogy unit at Albany Medi-cal Center Hospital andother cancer centers inour local area.

January’s Mission of the Month fundswill be used to purchase fabric needed to

make up pillowcase kits from which the pil-lowcases will be made.

The Pillowcase project is partof   American Patchwork and Quilting magazine’s 1 MillionPillowcase Challenge insupport of an organization of sewing volunteers calledConKerr Cancer.

ConKerr Cancer was startedby mom Cindy Kerr when herson, Ryan, was diagnosedwith cancer back in 2002.To brighten his hospitalroom, Cindy began makingfun pillowcases for his bed inthe oncology unit of their

Philadelphia hospital. Soon she was makingpillowcases for all the kids in the unit.

Since then, her efforts haveblossomed into an interna-tional organization of schoolgroups, sewing circles, church groups, prison in-

mates, and even the sickchildren themselves, allsewing pillowcases to makea sick child smile.

We need your help to make this project success. Please consider supporting ouPillowcase Party with your donationduring January, and with your time onApril 2.

More informat io

about the PillowcasParty will be forthcoming in Cross and Com

ments and on Community Reformed’s we

For over thirty years, our church’s roadside sign has provided us moments of inspiration,

hope, reflection, and humor. About 5 years ago, we began the ―Thought for Today‖ min-istry to reach our church family and friends in yet another way – a daily e-mail connec-tion. These ―Thoughts for Today‖ offer words of encouragement as we journey throughour hectic days as well as reminders of upcoming church events.

If you are interested in receiving these daily thoughts, contact Sandy Cornwell [email protected].

Thought for Today

Thanks to You…

The Consistory often receives Thank-You cards on behalf of the entire congregation.Beginning with this issue of Cross and Comments,

those messages will be shared with you, for whom they are intended.

From Victoria Inzerillo’s mother:

Dear Members of the Community Reformed Church of Colonie,

My daughter is Victoria Inzerillo and recently I suffered a stroke. Victoria brought me abeautiful prayer shawl that your congregation made and prayed over for me. Your gifthas made me feel loved and peaceful.

Many thanks, Patricia Scott.

From the leadership of the Migrant Ministry of First Baptist Church ofSchenectady for a recent Mission of the Month:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We, participants in the Migrant Ministry of First Baptist Church of Schenectady, want toexpress our deep appreciation and thanks to you for your generous and unselfish contri-butions to the migrant workers.

They were thrilled and so very thankful to receive your gifts. We wish you could haveshared this occasion with them – to see their smiles and to feel their joy.

I think of Hebrews 13:2, ―Be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have

entertained angels unawares.‖

Beginning in this issue, Cross and Comments will provide you with periodic financial reports and overviews of the budget.

From the TreasurerKevin Bottini

The Financial report for the first quarter of our fiscal year ending August 31,2011 reflects abottom line negative variance of approx. $5,000. This is due to Daycare revenues lower thaexpected. However, the Finance Committee is working closely with the Daycare to close thigap quickly. In addition, the Day Care expects two additional children to join us this January.

Recently, the Consistory established a new Daycare Committee under the direction of the Finance Committee to better establish uniform Day Care policies and procedures, and to hel

provide more timely management support to the Day CarDirector. This committee wibe chaired by Pam Strykerand will include Jim Colberand Cheryl Brooks on thcommittee, as well as thDaycare Director and Asst. Drector.

The Church's Witness incomis slightly ahead of budget aof Nov. 30th. The total expenses for the quarter arslightly over budget, but this i

mostly due to the timing ocertain payments, namely thsealing of our parking lot, anthe advance payment of sompension benefits.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feefree to contact one of the Fnance Committee membersBecky Miner, Pam Stryker o

myself. You can email me [email protected].

Bible Verse for JanuaryIn each issue of Cross and Comments we offer you a Bible verseto contemplate, study and memorize. It is our hope that this willbe one more way you can connect with God’s word.

As you consider your New Year’s Resolutions, look to God’s word

to guide you:

Colossians 3:17

“Whatever you do, in word or deed,do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Caring For CreationJanuary 2011

Each year, 19 billion

catalogs are mailedto American con-sumers. All thosecatalogs requiremore than 53 mil-lion trees and 56billion gallons of wastewater to pro-duce -- and many of us don't even knowhow we got on so many mailing lists!

So grab that stack of catalogs piling uon your coffee table and clear out thclutter. Visit www.CatalogChoice.org toput a stop to unwanted catalogs. Within10 weeks, your mailbox will be empty ounwanted catalogs. A less clutteredmailbox means less pollution, less wasteand less of the pollution that causeglobal warming.
