Man in the CityHave you seen the little orange man? The Man in the City Sculpture Project of 40+ sculptures displayed on rooftops throughout the cities of Detroit and Windsor came “Up North” this past summer! Crooked Tree Arts Center brought the Man in the City to the communities we serve where rooftop installations happened throughout the summer. John Sauvé created the Man in the City project in 2008 and has exhibited it on New York City’s High Line and most recently on New York City’s Governors Island. This engaging public arts exhibition is on display now through October 2015 in the following locations—

Students created their own Man in the City sculptures which were presented to the public in a colorful installation on the Bidwell Plaza. Pictured on the cover are students Angel Rakoniewski, Simon Baker, Joe Farley, Milo Baumhardt and Jasper Faylor with instructor Sarah Mann.

Creat ive Runway

Photos courtesy of John Deckinga /Tapestry Images and Neil Ahrens

Summer of 2014 had CTAC celebrating the creativity of Detroit. Artists, filmmakers, musicians, authors, entrepreneurs and designers brought their spirited energy north. Creative Runway featured Detroit creative industry designers and manufacturers with their apparel and accessories as we took over the parking lot for a high style fashion event!

Congratulations to the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce for another success-ful Festival on the Bay. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate for our contribution—rain and chalk art are not a great mix! We look forward to seeing all the artists (and their work!) next summer at Chalk & Chocolate 2015!

Nancy Dwan and Conrad Gold have had a lifetime interest in and appreciation for the arts. Nancy, a Petoskey native, was a student of Maggie Van Wagoner (retired Petoskey High School art teacher now teaching at CTAC), and Conrad, a local musician, has been playing guitar since his early 20s. CTAC’s very concentrated arts opportunities are a great match for their family. As homeschoolers, they actively seek out arts and educational opportunities for their children. As adults, they are grateful that their arts education has continued through their children…and what an education it is!

Their first introduction to the Arts Center was a highland fling dance, but the program that solidified their involvement in CTAC was the Beginning Strings program. They credit Kerry Johnson, then Strings Director, for her positive early influence on their eldest daughter, Aimon Dwan. Aimon has since received her BA in Music Education from Wooster College and is currently a full-time orchestra teacher in Worthington, Minnesota, and has recently auditioned for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. During the early years in the strings program, many of the homeschool families helped out with record keeping and other duties. “We really enjoyed helping get that program up and running—it was exciting,” said Nancy.

Many CTAC members will remember their second daughter, Esmae Gold, as a long-time student and performer with the School of Ballet. Esmae, who cur-rently is a BFA candidate in classical ballet at Merryhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania, was interested in dance at a very early age. She was enrolled in some preschool dance programs, but quality and the teacher mattered, so nothing was quite right until they found the dance program at CTAC.

Third daughter, Olive Gold’s passion lies in the visual arts. She has taken art classes at CTAC with a variety of instructors, has participated in the Annual Youth Arts Show and is a past award winner. This past spring, she was the recipient of a Crooked Tree Arts Scholarship for pursuing study in the arts. She is currently a student at St. Olaf College.

Their son, Asa, continues the family trend. He’s entered the Young Writer’s Expo, plays several musical instruments, including bass, electric stand-up, piano, guitar, and he writes and sings, too! We can’t wait to see what six-year old Ida is interested in!

When asked why the arts are important, Conrad says, “One of the many things is that it is not a virtual experience. Kids are connecting with people, experiences and gaining knowledge.” Adds Nancy, “When you look back, it’s not the minutia you remember. It’s the experiences, that particular concert or exhibit.”

What they hope for CTAC’s future, is to “keep the arts alive and all inclusive,” said Conrad. Nancy echoed that sentiment with continued accessibility and exposure to all the arts. “We’re always paying attention to the CTAC calendar; we don’t want to miss out!” says Nancy.

& Nancy Dwan Conrad GoldA Long

History of Supporting

the Arts

“I hardly knew what a cello was when I signed up for a Beginning Strings class at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in the fall of 2000. However, the decision to start playing a string instrument quickly morphed from a reluctant agreement to act upon my moth-er’s wishes, to one of the most important decisions I’ve ever made. It was the sense of community, the focus on working together toward a common goal, and the beauty of the music itself that hooked me. I am deeply indebted to my music teachers for opening up this world of music and community to me, and for inspiring me to become a teach-er myself. I am now happily employed as a full-time orchestra teacher in Worthington, Minnesota.” – Aimon Dwan

The Beginning Strings program since its inception in 2000 has grown to serve over 20 schools and 400 students in Charlevoix, Emmet and Cheboygan counties. Students receive tuition-free instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass.

Beginning Strings is made possible by the generous support of the family of Dorothy Gerber.

One of my favorite moments of the summer of 2014 was listening to the conversation around the table at a lunch at Stafford’s Perry Hotel. This is a special gathering of friends all connected by Crooked Tree Arts Center and they meet each year on July 23. This year more than a dozen men and women shared meaningful stories of the Arts Center from our past. Each one of these cherished members were former board members and many were past presidents. Two attendees are current board members yet originally were board members over 20 years ago. It’s not polite to discuss age, but just let me tell you more than one of the attendees was over the age of 90! The laughter was contagious as they reminisced about how they “did it all” when we had only one staff member in the early days. They cringed a bit as they discussed the subject of the purchase of the building in 1980 and how some people thought we could never sustain such a purchase. The delight in their voices as they discussed our growth was upbeat and full of pride. We all offered a toast to Edith Gilbert, one of our origi-nal founders. They meet on July 23, as that was Edith’s husband’s birthday. Edith said the sun always shines on July 23, and I saw that light in all of their faces. This group now gathers without Edith but she would be tickled to know they still meet in her memory. They were eager to hear of our current successes and challenges and they remarked with confidence that CTAC can weather any storm. As I thanked them for their years of service and devotion, a lump in my throat staggered my speech. It is truly an honor to be at the table with this group of leaders and art devo-tees. CTAC simply would not be here today without their efforts decades ago. I know that for a fact. Please remember that your support today as CTAC members will impact lives decades into our future. Here’s to the generous spirit of this group of founding members; we are proud to carry on your good work. I look forward to July 23, 2015.

I don’t know about all of you, but the last four months have been very exciting and busy for me. I retired at the end of April after 42 years as an orthodontist in Petoskey. To celebrate, Jane and I spent two weeks driving around Canada’s Atlantic Provinces, eating as much seafood as we could.

When we returned, it was time to become absorbed in the Arts Center’s very busy summer, starting with the opening weekend’s festivities of the Detroit @ CTAC celebration. Thursday, June 5, we dedicated the Bidwell Plaza, had a private preview opening of the galleries and watched a film called, “Standing in the Shadows of Motown.”Friday was CTAC’s An-nual Paint Out with a reception featuring Detroit classics—Coney dogs and Vernors. A screening of “Louder than Love: The Grande Ballroom Story” ended the evening. Saturday, was a Coffee @ Ten presentation with photographer Jenny Risher, who became a favorite of everyone who heard her talk and saw her Detroit personalities photo exhibit. That evening, there was a total “rock your socks off” concert by Detroit soul rocker, Jennifer Westwood, followed by the first-ever CTAC After Dark: Bourbon & Brew. Look for our next CTAC After Dark event com-ing in February 2015.

The Detroit @ CTAC opening was only the beginning of a super-busy summer of Arts Center activities. We had five films, two concerts and a full Coffee @ Ten lecture series associated with the Detroit @ CTAC ex-perience. We won’t soon forget the Motor City Horns with the Brothers Groove and Thornetta Davis—people were dancing in the aisles! An-other new hit was the Bidwell Plaza Singer-Songwriter Series featuring live music on the Bidwell Plaza Thursday afternoons in June and July.

There seemed to be something to do every week through July and Au-gust. There were lectures in Harbor Springs and Charlevoix with sev-eral receptions, June and August ballet performances by our wonderful School of Ballet dancers—excellent, as always—and, of course, I will brag about the Detroit Creative Industries Runway Show in August, for which I modeled. I have to admit, walking the runway was tons of fun! Speaking of fun, the second annual Summer Super Swirl was bigger and better than ever.

Who could forget to mention our signature event of the summer, D’Art for Art. The new venue, the Warehouse at Irish Boat Shop, was well received, as was the dinner. The Detroit Circus even came to town! It was a wonderful evening, and Jane and I had a ball.

There was something for everyone this summer, and I’m sure you all had as much fun as I did. I’m looking forward to a busy fall at the Arts Center!
