    Working inRounds1. Make a short foundationchain (the pattern willdesignate how many,usually 46). Insert hookinto first ch, but instead of

    going under the braid, godirectly down into top of chso round lays flat.2. YO; pull through all loops.3. If you are working in sc,make one ch for height (twofor hdc, three for dc, four fortr). Work the number of st

    called for by inserting hookinto middle of ring (notinto ch st making up ring).Attach last st to first st withsl st.4. Drape a scrap ofdifferent-colored yarn at

    end of row before you startnext one to mark your place.Make one ch for height;work as many sc into topof each st as indicated inpattern. To keep circleflat, make more st in eachconsecutive row (yourpattern will specify howmany).

    Working in aNew Ball of YarnYou can use this method tochange yarn in the middle ofa row or at the end of one.

    1. After you complete a st,

    but before you start a newone, hold your new yarnright along with your oldone with tail of new yarnsticking off to right.2. Pretend that the old andnew yarns are one; YO withboth and insert hook intotop of next st.3. Drop old yarn and YO withnew one. Pull through bothloops on hook.4. Work stitches with newyarn for rest of row. Whenproject is done, go back

    and thread loose ends ontoa blunt-tip needle; feedloose ends through severalstitches to hold in place.

    Trellis Stitch(A network of lengths ofchains looped together tomake a meshlike pattern;must be used in a projectwhere number o

    At end of row, ch five. Skipover three st from previousrow. Work one sc into nextst. Repeat across the row.At end of row, turn workaround; ch five. Make one

    sc into first five-chain spnear center (your stitch goesall the way around chain,not through one of chains).Repeat across row and for allrows after.

    Picot(A little loop of chainsworked into one stitch tocreate a small bubble.)1. Sl st into a st and makethree or four ch (yourpattern should tell you how

    many).2. Sl st back into the same st.3. Keep sl st through eachst until its time for anotherpicot.
