It’s been a decade of joy, laughter, fun and excitement. A decade of new friendships and old friendships. A decade of love, wonderful memories and all those priceless feelings which enrich both your body and soul. What started off as a small intimate event with not more than 150 participants, has grown to be one of the biggest and most famous salsa festivals in the world, with high-class salsa artists and DJs, a couple of thousands of participants, numerous venues and endless parties – a real place-to-be for salseros from all around the globe.

And what can we say after these 10 years? The thing that we’re most proud of is the fact that you wonderful people have created this story with us! With your positive energy, your smiles, support and love, which permeate the entire 12 days of this unique dance experience. Together we have managed to create a place where you can come and fill your heart with positive energy which will keep you going throughout the whole year. You wonderful people give us reason to do what we’re doing!

A special thanks goes to all amazing people who help us each year “behind the scenes”. Without you, our dear volunteers, all of this would be impossible!

A WORD FROM THE ORGANIZERS


Salsa festivals or congresses are events where dancers, choreographers, musicians and dance enthusiasts in general, meet and share their passion through dancing. Salsa festivals are aimed towards increasing the popularity of salsa and related dances which salsa developed from. Usually, festivals consist of daily workshops held by international instructors while night program brings you the best of show performances, parties and live concerts. Our organizing

team takes it very seriously to adapt the festival not only to experienced dancers, but to absolute beginners as well.

Croatian Summer Salsa Festival is definitely one of UNIQUE festivals in EUROPE and worldwide. It is maybe the only salsa event in Europe that, next to congress halls, involves the whole town of ROVINJ as its dance stage. Since we included 2 EXTRA PRE-FESTIVAL DAYS, a boat trip and an after party after the festival Croatian Summer Salsa Festival has become a 7 day event of outstanding music, dance and fun and Rovinj a TOP SALSA DESTINATION for your summer holidays.

WHAT IS A SALSA FESTIVAL?

This festival is definitely BEGINNER FRIENDLY – we will teach you how to dance salsa! Our goal is to share passion, creativity, positive energy and to have fun while still learning a lot. Special beginner workshops will give you the basics of salsa dancing which you will be able to practice on the parties. If you have never danced before, this is the right festival for you!

FUND RAISING FOR FLOOD VICTIMSHelp those in needSince we always try to incorporate a charity event into our festival and put a smile on the faces of people in need, this year it seemed more than appropriate to organize a fund raising for the victims of flooded areas in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia who have lost everything they had due to the worst natural cathatrophe that stroke this area in the last century. Buy a festival T-Shirt and donate for the people in need!

DIVING EXPERIENCEScuba diving After last year’s dancing in the air, this year we’re taking you under the sea! Don’t miss a unique opportunity to try out your best salsa move while scuba diving ;)

DANCE POINTS IN THE TOWNDon’t be shy and JOIN US Hang out with other dancers or passers-by, exchange different experiences and dance on the street if you want to. We think of it as a great way to spread positive vibrations and to present salsa to the people who are not familiar with it. THURSDAY BRUGAL NIGHT WELCOME PARTY LA MAXIMA 79 LIVE – ONE OF THE MOST WANTED SALSA ORQUESTAS!This year’s EXCLUSIVE HIGHLIGHT is a LIVE concert of one of the most wanted salsa orquestas in the world – LA MAXIMA 79! The concert will start at about 10:30 p.m. in ADRIS OLD TOBACCO FACTORY.

FRIDAY GRANDE FIESTA OPEN-AIR PARTY Our unique GRANDE FIESTA on the main town square will start with show performances at 8.30 p.m. Later on you will enjoy THE SPECIALTY OF THE NIGHT – MAYITO RIVERA AND THE SONS OF CUBA Live concert! THERE WILL BE NO DANCE FLOOR on the square, so keep in mind to bring some appropriate shoes for the stone floor!!! Grande Fiesta lasts until 00:30 a.m., but you can continue dancing at Adris Old Tobacco Factory until 6 a.m., so don’t miss the best of the music played by our famous DJs! PUNCTUALITY Expect shows and concerts to start on time! (Time: check the program!)

WRISTBANDS Wristbands must be worn ALL the time during the weekend and will be checked at each entrance - workshops and parties. Lost, removed or broken wristbands will NOT be replaced. You will have to

POOL PARTY IN VILLAS RUBIN RESORT PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFF YOUR WRISTBANDS AFTER THE POOL PARTY - YOU WILL NEED THEM FOR THE BUS TRIP BACK! The bus station will be situated in front of ADRIS HALL (Please follow the map).

WORKSHOPS We kindly ask all participants to respect the objective of the workshops which is learning and respecting the instructors’ authority. Please take some clean clothes, dancing shoes and some water. Each festival venue is provided with a toilette (please keep it clean!) IMPORTANT NOTICEPlease respect your dance level!!

SHUTTLE BUS On Friday (27th) and Saturday (28th) there will be a free shuttle bus driving from the hotel Lone to Adris Old Tobacco Factory during workshops. There isn’t a fixed schedule, the bus will be circling around throughout the whole time.

VIDEO RECORDING & PHOTOGRAPHY It is not allowed to record during the classes. However, you will be able to do it after each

workshop with the permission of the instructors. HELPDESK AND FESTIVAL OFFICE Helpdesk is in front of the festival office in hotel Park. Working hours and possible changes will be announced at the INFO BOARD! The organizer reserves the right to change schedules! The festival team is always at your disposal.

MERCHANDISE Our shopping area will be in the Adris Old Tobacco Factory and in Hotel Park. There you will be able to find some dance accessories and themed paintings to buy. IMPORTANT INFO: The official currency in Croatia is kuna, so make sure you exchange your money before buying anything.

PARTY TICKETS - IMPORTANT! Everybody has to have a PARTY TICKET in order to enter each party regardless of the wristband! Party tickets will be given to you during your registration in the festival office. Lost tickets won’t be reimbursed and without them you won’t be able to enter the party.

GET AROUND TOWN QUICKER… …on wheels! Rovinj is a small town and you can get anywhere within 15-20 minutes, but if you want to save more time and get around town in flashes you should consider renting a bike from our official partner Lucky Way.

CUBA/CROATIARAMON NOA CARABALLO & JOSIPA KOLEGA Ramon and Josipa are unique Croatian/ Cuban couple, dancing, living, teaching and performing in Zagreb, Croatia. Just come and see their classes! On this year’s CSSF they will be teaching salsa cubana and rueda de casino.

UKMOE FLEXMoe is one of the most exciting, inspiring and entertaining choreographers on the International Latin dance scene today! His boundless enthusiasm for dance is impossible to ignore and he has gained his reputation through sheer hard work, dedication, determination and talent.

SWITZERLAND NEERAJ MASKARA & GOSIA KULPANeeraj Maskara is currently one of the most popular salsa instructors and performers in Europe. His dance background has been mainly jazz ballet and salsa with influences from several other dance forms. His shows are characterized by excellent musical interpretation, creative moves, great energy and expression. PORTUGAL NEWCOMERS AFROLATIN CONNECTIONThis year, for the first time on our salsa festival, we are presenting you one of the top kizomba couples in the world - Ricardo and Paula from Porto in Portugal! Energy, flow, sexiness are just some of the traits that are associated with this couple who are literally “crème de la crème” of kizomba world.

UK NEWCOMERS OSBANIS TEJEDA & ANNETA KEPKAOsbanis and Anneta’s fresh and unique dance style perfectly characterizes the fusion of Cuban dance. With Osbanis’ rich knowledge and background as a well-respected Cuban musician, their focus is on the importance of musical interpretation, in addition to incorporating Rumba & Afro Cuban movement to Casino.


AUSTRIADADO & CONNYBeautiful, elegant, sophisticated and wild, energetic and laid back at the same time! During their classes they always try to emphasize the feminine and the masculine interpretation of music stressing that salsa (and dancing in general) is not just a pile of complex movements and spins, but performance in which dancers express their feeling for harmony of music and movement in their own particular way.

CUBAYOANNIS TAMAJO & ISMARAY CHACON TEJEDA If you are longing for the original and traditional Cuban flavour, Croatian Summer Salsa Festival 2014 is bringing you 100% Cuban energy! They will be teaching both pre-festival special days (6 classes in 2 days!) and festival workshops (4 classes). By learning from these high quality teachers, you will surely satisfy all your Cuban appetites!

CROATIA IVANA RAMADŽAA dancer since her early childhood, this young and talented girl will rock your world! Ivana has been a reggaeton, Zumba and dancehall instructor for nearly a decade. With her positive approach, contagious smile and wicked moves she’ll definitely make you do things you’ve never done before. Oh yeah, and there’s some dancing involved as well ;)

FRANCE NEWCOMERSFELICIEN & ISABELLEIt is kizomba that united Isabelle with Felicien, each bringing to the table their musicality, technique and creativity. They mesh the authentic with the innovative, combining fundamentals of Angolan kizomba and fusing it with their own influences. They are now one of the top kizomba couples, travelling all around the world!

USA/ISRAEL EDDIE TORRES & VANESSA LACEDONIAEddie Torres, also known as “The Mambo King” has been dancing and teaching salsa for over four decades. He has trained thousands of dancers, including some of the most important dancers and instructors of the Big Apple. Together with his talented partner Vanessa, he will be teaching a range of workshops on this year’s 10th anniversary of the festival!

CUBA NEWCOMERSYUNAISY FARRAY & DANGER RODRIGUEZModern, artistic, elegant & so sexy but above all firmly connected to their roots… Cuba! CSSF brings you the couple of the moment, real refreshment, and an explosive energy of great Cuban dance passion! Yunaisy and Danger began their careers separately but always united in its origins by the same nexus: Cuba.

CROATIA NEWCOMERSDEAN & INGRIDYoung, charming and talented couple from Croatia, always ready to fill your heart with the joy they have for salsa and dance in general. Their primary interest is Cuban salsa, but they also enjoy dancing Porto Rican and New York style on2. In addition to that they formed and still run a show group which had a distinct appearance on the 8th Croatian Summer Salsa Festival.

SERBIA NEWCOMERSDEJAN & SANJAThey have a wide variety of specialties since they have started to dance salsa and tango after competitive ballroom career. Some of them include LA and NY salsa, bachata, bachatango, salsatango, kizomba, partnerwork, show style, musicality etc. They are very charismatic and their communication techniques within the group they teach is excellent. Their classes are always amusing and enjoyable; dedicated teachers who help each and every individual perform at their best.

You can enjoy spacious pebble beaches with a great view over the Old City of Rovinj and work on that tan to make everybody back home green with envy once you return. Or you can join the party, sip your cocktail and move to the best Latin beats. Only the best DJs and party crowd are waiting for you.

Starting from Monday June 23rd from 2 to 7 p.m. you and your friends can enjoy the sun with a cocktail in your hands and selected music by our DJs every day throughout the whole week! You can check the boat and bus schedule in our festival office.

ParadisoFor all of you not attending the daily workshops, we have another special treat – beach parties at Paradiso beach! If you’re not up for boat or bus drives during the day, take a short walk by the sea and you’ll come to our second party station! Again – the best party crowd and DJs, cocktails and a whole lot of fun by the sea. You know the story ;)

Starting from Wednesday June 25th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (with our DJ from 3 to 7 p.m.) enjoy, relax or party with your friends at Paradiso beach.


And on Sunday 29th June…. get ready for the POOL PARTY!! An ecstatic crowd moving to salsa, bachata, kizomba rhythms and r’n’b and house beats, all instructors in one place, ruedas in pools, wild animations… you can find everything on the crazy Pool Party in Rovinj! Find out why the ticket for this party is the most wanted one at the festival!

We have organized buses to Villa Rubin Resort on Sunday 29th so make sure to put on your wristbands before entering the bus and don’t take them off until you come back, since they are also tickets for the bus. The bus will be leaving throughout the whole day starting from 12.30 in front of Adris Old Tobacco Factory.

BREAKING NEWS – Since this party has become the most expected and most wanted one, we had to find an even nicer location than last year – Welcome to Villa Rubin Resort! :) Expect a shorter bus drive, a newly renovated super fancy pool area with an amazing view and lots of space for all you party animals!!

Hrvoje Puškarić was born in Zagreb. He finished the School of Applied Art, painting department. In the same year, he enrolled the Art Academy in Zagreb. He also went on numerous study travels in Andalucia and Cuba - Academia de Bellas Artes San Allejandro - Habana. In the year 2000, he registered for the post-graduate studies in Sevilla, Spain.

THE TOWN OF ROVINJ On the magnificent coast of Istria (Croatia), right below the Lim Fjord, there is the most romantic place in the Mediterranean! The town of Rovinj is the right destination for all of you seeking a sentimental atmosphere of the times that have forever gone by. In the Mediterranean, you can find it here, in the town that has begun its romantic life on an island, its restricted area resulting in crowded houses, narrow streets and small squares, still untouched by modern urbanism.

One`s life is filled with a number of moments, pieces of time given to us. It is what we do with our time that matters, or better to say what we do for ourselves and more important what we do for the others. We can take our time for granted, or we can make a change, leave the legacy behind us. I am honoured to be given the opportunity to choose the life in which music and dance changes people`s lives, connects different cultures, makes people accept and appreciate their differences and finally forget about them to become one, people.

Last 10 years I have been living a beautiful dream, following the path of my heart and sharing it with my colleagues, friends and family. It was not always an easy path for me (us) to follow, but as the saying says, if the path is easy, you don t̀ dream big enough. One of the things I’ve found out is that dreams come straight from the heart. It̀ s your heart and soul,

your inner self speaking to you. It knows what is best for you and it̀ s upon us to choose to ignore it or to follow and fulfil our destiny. Your heart knows the best, it cannot be lied to. So, I`ll take this opportunity to send a message, my kind of legacy, follow your heart and dreams because nobody can take them away from you. They are only yours to dream. Last, but not least. I was really lucky to meet the right people in my life that I could share this dream with. They let me in their lives and their dreams and eventually we have become the second family, which goes through good and bad times. So, the only better thing than living your dreams is living and sharing them with friends and family!

Afro-Cuban is one of many dance forms originating in Latin countries. Although they share some characteristics, the various forms of Latin dance also reflect the unique style and culture of their countries of origin. For example, we have flamenco dancing in Spain, the tango in Argentina, and the merengue and bachata in the Dominican Republic. The contexts of dance within these cultures vary: people dance for social or for religious reasons, as part of rituals or community celebrations, and as performance art. In Cuba, music and dance are inseparable. From religious music to rumba, danzón, son, chachach, timba...the rhythms and the dances were created simultaneously as inseparable parts of the same whole.

AFRO-CUBAN FOLKLORIC DANCES ›› Afro-Cuban folkloric and religious dance is a genre with a lot of different dances from several African countries brought to Cuba during the colonization of the Third World. We can separate them in two main categories. There are religious dances of Yoruba people from Nigeria (Orishas) and dances of different bantú tribes from Congo (Palo, Yuka, Abakua).

RUMBA ›› There are various styles of Afro-Cuban rumba music and dance, but they all have strong influences from African drumming and dance and Spanish/Gitano poetry, singing and dance. The clave beat (2-3 or 3-2) plays a very important role in all rumba styles. Afro- Cuban rumba is entirely different than ballroom rumba or the African style of pop music called rumba. Rumba developed in

rural Cuba is still danced in Havana, Mantanzas and other Cuban cities but these days ... influences from jazz and hip hop.

YAMBU ›› This is the oldest known style of rumba, sometimes called the old people’s rumba because of its slower beat. It can be danced alone (especially by women) or by men and women together. Although male dancers may flirt with female dancers during the dance, they do not use the vacunao - the symbolic, sexual “vaccination” - used in rumba guaguanco.

GUAGUANCO ›› Rumba Guaguanco is faster than yambu, with more complex rhythms, and involves flirtatious movements between a man and a woman. The woman may both entice and “protect herself” from the man, who tries to catch the woman off-guard with a vacunao - tagging her with the flip of a hankerchief or by throwing his arm, leg or pelvis in the direction of the woman, in a symbolic attempt touching or sexually contacting her. When a man attempts to give a woman a vacunao, she uses her skirt to protect her pelvis and then whip the sexual energy away from her body.

COLUMBIA ›› In this fast and energetic style of rumba, with a 6/8 feel, solo male dancers provoke the drummers to play complex rhythms that they imitate through their creative and sometimes acrobatic movements. Men may also compete with other men to display their agility, strength, confidence and even sense of humor. Columbia

incorporates many movements derived from Congo dances as well as Spanish flamenco, and recently more and more dancers incorporates breakdancing and hip hop moves. Women are also beginning to dance Columbia, too.

COMPARSA ›› Cuban comparsa is the dance of the street carnival and is more commonly known as „conga line“. It is loud, flashy and fun, with dancers in colorful and and musicians playing horns (trumpets, trombones, tubas, etc.), percussion instruments (maracas, bongos, congas, guiros, batas, claves, checkeres, surdos, tamborines) and whistles.

TRADITIONAL POPULAR DANCE (BAILES POPULARES) ›› In addition to traditional Afro-Cuban folkloric styles, Cuba is also known for its popular traditional dances such as Son, Cha Cha Cha, Danzon and Mambo. DANZON ›› Created by Miguel Failde Pérez in 1879, Danzón is the national dance of Cuba and evolved from Danza. The music structure – A B A B A - consists of an introduction, A, just used for dancers to make acquaintance, flirt or stroll the dance floor. Then a dance section starts (B), to go back to the introduction and repeat the sequence again. The dance style is elegant yet extremely sensual and flavorful; it is danced off the beat and includes square figures.

SON ›› Son is derived from Cuba’s African (drumming, complex rhythms) and Spanish roots

POJMOVNIK / GLOSSARY


(instrumentation, poetic style), and is the precursor of what is now called salsa. Originally rural music that developed as an accompaniment to dancing, it became a popular in Cuba’s urban areas in the 20th century. Eventually, it was adapted to modern instrumentation and larger bands. Traditional Son instrumentation could include the tres (a type of guitar with three sets of closely spaced strings), standard guitars and various hand drums and other percussion instruments. Many sons also include parts for trumpets and other brass instruments, due to the influence of American jazz. Son, the dance, starts with the formal, closed embrace of the man and woman. The couple maintains a very upright frame, with quick flirtatious and sensual side-to-side movements of the shoulders, torso and hips accenting the underlying six count rhythm of the feet. Son is danced contratiempo, meaning, off the beat, so the couple moves on the half beat before one.

CHA CHA CHA ›› Cha Cha Cha arose in the early ‘50s as an offshoot of Danzon and Mambo, and was created by Enrique Jorrin – the original rhythm is an onomatopoeia of the sound of the percussion and the one created by the dancer’s feet dragging on the ground. Cha-cha-cha is danced off beat (the dance starts with three quick changes of weight -- thus the name cha-cha-cha -- preceded by two slow and a pause). It was later adopted and commercialized by ballroom dancers who for teaching purposes (for those unable to identify the beat) cha was dropped and it became only Cha-cha. In Cha Cha Cha, like

mambo and rumba, the dancers’ hips are relaxed, allowing free movement in the pelvic section.

MAMBO ›› Mambo is a modification of Afro-Cuban rhythms and particularly the Danzon. It was created by Israel “Cachao” Lopez, and infused with American jazz band format. Mambo was danced in the same upbeat and sassy manner as American swing.

CASINO ›› Casino is a holly Cuban dance developed during the mid and late 1960s in Havana. It is a form of what is sometimes called “Cuban Salsa“ (outside of Cuba) as distinct from New York or Los Angeles styles. SALSA ›› The history of the “Salsa” dance is peppered with hearsay and contradiction. Although few would disagree that the music and dance forms originate largely Cuban Son, most agree that Salsa, as we know it today, is a North American interpretation of the older forms of music and dance. New York’s Latino community had a vibrant musical and dancing scene throughout the ‘50s but found limited success with the ‘Anglo’ mainstream. In the 1970s, the adoption of the term “Salsa” reduced the linguistic and cultural barriers to mainstream and worldwide adoption of Latin music and dance.

TIMBA ›› Musically, timba is the result of an innovative fusion of elements drawn from multiple directions. It is a fusion of jazz and rumba, with hip-hop and reggae thrown in. It has its roots in son, the guitar-and-brass-driven Afro-

jazz band sound of the fifties.

CLAVE ›› Uniting Afro-Cuban music and dance the clave is a rhythmic pattern, meaning “key.” The word clave not only refers to this characteristic rhythm but it also refers to a Cuban percussion instrument consisting of two round polished sticks that are struck together. Clave pattern may be played on other percussion instruments as well. Even when clave is not explicitly present in the music, Afro-Cuban musicians feel its pattern and dancers move to its rhythm as it is a heart.

BACHATA ›› Bachata is a style of dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. It is danced widely all over the world but not identically. The basics to the dance are three-step with a Cuban hip motion, followed by a tap including a hip movement on the 4th beat. The knees should be slightly bent so the performer can sway the hips easier. Generally, most of the dancer’s movement is in the lower body up to the hips, and the upper body moves much less.

KIZOMBA ›› Kizomba is one of the most popular genres of dance and music originating in Angola. It is a mix of traditional Angolan semba with kilapanda and merengue sung generally in Portuguese, wrongly confused with zouk, because the pace is very similar. In Europe the word “kizomba” is used for any type of music derived from zouk, even if not of Angolan origin. The kizomba dancing style is also known to be very sensual and flows with a music of a romantic flow.
