I n January 2016 Tihomir Oreškoviç was sworn in as prime minister of Croatia as the nonpartisan techno- cratic head of a centre-right coalition government. Oreškoviç, a pharmaceutical executive who held dual Croatian and Canadian citizenship, was chosen for his financial acumen, as Croatia struggled to maintain its frag- ile economic recovery. After just five months in office, however, Oreškoviç’s government was toppled by a vote of no confidence after a bribery scandal enveloped one of his deputy prime ministers. The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) emerged as the winner in snap elections held on September 11, and the following month HDZ leader Andrej Plenkoviç was confirmed as prime minister at the head of a centre-right coalition government.
