Project Goals
• Reduce NPS loading to the Kalamazoo River
– Est. 30 tons/yr sediment reduction
– Est. 45 lbs/yr phosphorus reduction
– Est. 50 lbs/yr nitrogen reduction
• Repair/stabilize streambank erosion areas
• Install native vegetation riparian buffers
• Protect existing infrastructure
• Educate community & adjacent owners

Project Challenges
• Historic flooding • “Chapter 20” intracounty drain
– Assess local jurisdictions rather than residents – Series of low-income neighborhoods – Matching funds from assessments
• Railroad tracks collapsing into the creek • Decades of erosion • Failed culverts and misaligned culverts • Obstructions/trash/debris • Vulnerable infrastructure (roads/utilities/etc.)

Project Benefits • Native seeding/vegetation = 0.5 acres
• Streambank erosion repairs = 270 ft
• Reduction of 45 lbs total phosphorus/yr
• Reduction of 30 tons sediment/yr
• Reduction of 50 lbs total nitrogen/yr
• Permanent educational signs at each site
• Stable bankfull conditions
• Infrastructure protection
• Water quality & aesthetic improvements
