Project Setting

• Olmsted-Davis Drain

• Davis Creek

• DEQ Grant/3 Sites

Fostering Innovation and Partnerships Since 1992

Davis Creek Watershed

• 9,251 acres

• Discharge to the Kalamazoo River (TMDL)

• Upstream of City of Kalamazoo

• Highest NPS pollutant loads in Kalamazoo County

Fostering Innovation and Partnerships Since 1992

Project Goals

• Reduce NPS loading to the Kalamazoo River

– Est. 30 tons/yr sediment reduction

– Est. 45 lbs/yr phosphorus reduction

– Est. 50 lbs/yr nitrogen reduction

• Repair/stabilize streambank erosion areas

• Install native vegetation riparian buffers

• Protect existing infrastructure

• Educate community & adjacent owners

Fostering Innovation and Partnerships Since 1992

Why Restoration?

• Water quality impairments

• Loss of habitat

• Ecosystem degradation

• Land loss

• Safety concerns

• Infrastructure protection

• Flooding

• Aesthetics

Fostering Innovation and Partnerships Since 1992

Project Challenges

• Historic flooding • “Chapter 20” intracounty drain

– Assess local jurisdictions rather than residents – Series of low-income neighborhoods – Matching funds from assessments

• Railroad tracks collapsing into the creek • Decades of erosion • Failed culverts and misaligned culverts • Obstructions/trash/debris • Vulnerable infrastructure (roads/utilities/etc.)
