PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

This program is designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic, and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum. The three day course prepares participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services including Group and Individual Crisis Intervention techniques. The need for appropriate follow up services and referrals when necessary is also described. Considerable evidence gathered to date strongly supports the multi-component crisis intervention strategy, which is discussed in this course. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to: • Define stress, critical incident stress, and post-traumatic stress disorder. • List at least four fundamental principles of crisis intervention. • List the 10 basic interventions of CISM. • Define and describe in detail the CISM group processes of demobilization, crisis management briefing,

defusings, and CISD debriefings. • Define and describe in detail the CISM individual process of SAFER-R. • List common critical incident stress signs and symptoms. • Demonstrate individual and group crisis intervention techniques.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

The audience for this class includes emergency services, military, business/industrial, hospital, and mental health professionals who desire to increase their abilities to utilize crisis intervention techniques. TUITION: $350

Upon successful completion of this program, class participants receive certificates in “Individual Crisis Intervention and Peer Support” and “Group Crisis Intervention” from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT EDUCATORS: ACT 48 Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic is recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to offer continuing education credits under Act 48 guidelines. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic adheres to the Act 48 Continuing Education Guidelines. CERTIFIED ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELORS/CERTIFIED CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS PROFESSIONAL: CADC/CCDP The Office of Education and Regional Programming, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC is certified by the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB) to provide Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) and Certified Co-Occurring Disorders Professional (CCDP) continuing education credits. This program is being offered for 27.0 continuing education credits. MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS: CEU Nurses and other health care professionals are awarded 2.7 Continuing Education Units (CEU). One CEU is equal to 10 contact hours. Nurses: For attendance at this program you will receive a Certificate of Attendance confirming 27 hours of continuing education. These hours may be considered eligible in completing the 30 hours of continuing education required for bi-annual nursing re-licensure in Pennsylvania. Peer Specialists: This program fulfills requirements for Certified Peer Specialist continuing education. COUNSELORS: NCC Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC is recognized by the National Board for Certified Counselors to offer continuing education for National Certified Counselors. Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC adhere to the NCC Continuing Education Guidelines. This program is being offered for 27.0 continuing education credits. PSYCHOLOGISTS Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. LICENSED/CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKERS, LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS, LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS: SW/LPC/LMFT 27.0 clock hours of continuing education are provided through co-sponsorship of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, a PA-approved provider of social work continuing education in accordance with all the applicable educational and professional standards of the Council on Social Work Education.
