Crissman’s March Is Reading Month! READING IS OUR SUPERPOWER!!

Dear Crissman Families, I’m “SUPER” excited for this year’s MARCH IS READING MONTH!! Our theme, “READING IS OUR SUPERPOWER” takes on such a strong meaning!! Reading is everywhere! It is the foundation of learning for every child! Creating a strong reader EMPOWERS children with the tools needed to be successful in life. Attached to this note is a list of events, a March calendar and various activities for the Month that can be turned in to earn raffle tickets. The main goal is to reward a child’s reading with a book. Therefore, this year, when a student turns in any of the activities, they will be rewarded with a raffle ticket. At our ROCKSTAR READING Assembly at the end of the month, 6 students will be selected at every grade level to earn a $5 gift card to Barnes and Noble so they may go purchase a book of their choice. We feel that this reward will help continue their love of a good book. In addition, Utica Community Schools has partnered up with The United Shore Professional Baseball League, to promote reading in kids. We at Crissman have joined as a part of Lancelot’s Learners League, a fun way to encourage reading development in students. Every student that “hits a home run” receives a free ticket to attend a 2018 baseball game at Jimmy John’s Field, where they will be honored on the field with all of the students who completed the reading program. Turning in a SUPERHERO BINGO CARD will represent a home run and will earn your child a free ticket to a baseball game. Details will follow. Please encourage your child to participate in the Reading Month activities. One of the most effective approaches to helping young children develop literacy skills is having a home environment that supports literacy. Research clearly shows that instructional environments have a powerful impact on children's growth in reading. Thank you for joining in our celebration of reading!! CALLING ALL SUPER HERO READERS!

I would like to invite any parents, older siblings, grandparents, relatives, or other special people to surprise your

child by being a “SUPERHERO Mystery Reader” for “March is Reading Month” in your child’s classroom. Students LOVE having their family, friends, and relatives visit their classrooms to share in our learning

by reading a favorite story aloud to their class.

SUPERHERO Readers will visit us on March 23rd. Here’s how it works: • I have created a SUPERHERO VIP READER sign-up on the Sly Reply link that will be sent home at a

later date.

• Due to class instruction time, we will NOT be able to accommodate everyone. Teachers have selected times that best fit the learning environment in their classroom. THESE TIMES CAN’T BE ALTERED.

• Once I confirm you as a reader, I will send a “CLUE SHEET” home that you may fill out with clues about yourself. You can then send that note in to your child’s teacher. Remember, you are a MYSTERY SUPERHERO to the class, so try not to tell your child when you will be coming.

• Readers are asked to bring a book to read or read a teacher-chosen book from our classroom library.
