Dear Participant,

It’s their worst day. And, yet, tens of thousands of people end up in the hospital Emergency Department (ED) or jail each year because they don’t have access to the level of mental health crisis services they need. The Crisis Now partners believe now is the time to change crisis care worldwide.

We are very pleased to welcome you and that you will participate in the 2nd International Summit on Urgent and Emergency Mental Health Care in Washington, DC as part of the IIMHL Leadership Exchange week.

Monday and Tuesday, September 9 - 10, policy makers, researchers, crisis innovators, individuals with a lived experience, family members, and community leaders will convene at EDC, Inc. They will share their valuable experience, inspire and together craft an international declaration calling for a new standard of care.

Less costly, more effective and considerably more humane. It’s a triple win.

Room 1 The Why? Universal values, rights and principles Moderated by Steve Miccio There are many healthcare systems, and many differ widely from the US version. What principles would fit and be transformative worldwide, including in low- and middle-income countries? Room 2 The Who? Leadership, culture and commitment to parity Moderated by Kathryn Turner Warehousing patients in crisis is a global status quo. Crisis Now implies a radical move away from passive acceptance and hopelessness, with a call to action for systematic solutions.

Room 3 The What? Specific practices and interventions Moderated by Becky Stoll Core elements of a crisis continuum include a call center hub, mobile crisis to the door and accessible inpatient alternatives.

Room 4 The How? Implementation and continuous improvement Moderated by Donna Robinson Emergency medical care is characterized by standard practices and data driven improvements. Why not psychiatric crisis?

Room 5 The Whom? Community and public health Moderated by Stephanie Hepburn Taking the lead implies that behavioral health owns its mantle, and partners with multiple stakeholders, law enforcement, hospital, etc.
