DISCUSSION – Mead What is the bigger issue?

1. Race & socio-economic issues the big issue.2. Interpreting test results too complicated;

• Few constant measures to individual achievement• Tests are too new

3. Respected test: National Assessment of Educational Progress(NAEP), “The Nation’s Report Card (US Dept of Education)” • Only way to measure national trends in boy/girl performances.• Does not support that “boys’ academic achievement is falling.”

• Grades 4-8 – improved; Grades 9-12 – not so clear• Race factor: Whites 10x more successful than

Blacks & Hispanics (low, but not getting worse)
