What is a CRIS?
“a Current Research Information System, commonly known as "CRIS", is any information tool dedicated to provide access to and disseminate research information” (www.eurocris.org)
A CRIS consists of
• a data model describing objects of interest to R&D
• a tool or set of tools to manage the data
COAR Annual Meeting, Istanbul, May 7-8th 2013 Anna Clements, University of St Andrews & euroCRIS
What is research information?
Information about :
• Researchers
• Organisations (who Carry out, Fund, Publish, Commercialise, Benefit from: RESEARCH)
• Funding Programmes & Calls
• Projects (Proposed, Ongoing, Completed)
• Publications, Patents, Data, Products
• Impact (Indicators and Measures)
• Facilities, Equipment, Services
• Addresses, Geographic Bindings, Languages
• And their Relationships

Questions we want to support
• How many articles has author X published in 2011 as a first author?
• How many times have articles by author X been cited by the end of the
previous year?
• Did author X publish with institutionally external authors?
• In how many FP7 projects does/did organisation Z participate?
• How many publications have resulted from project Y?
• How many people have been employed in the course of FP7 projects from
the 1st call in the New Member States?
• How many PhD students have participated in national research projects in
country C? In which countries have they earned their masters degrees?
• How many women have been involved in FP7 projects?
• How often have articles in journal A been requested in 2010?
• How many articles have been published in field B?

CRIS-IR TG
The CRIS-IR Task Group aims at furthering the
science and technology of the linkage between CRIS
and repositories and specifically open access
institutional repositories of publications, although data
and software repositories are also of interest. This
involves working on the architecture for linkage, the
metadata and the mechanisms. There are
outstanding issues in these areas concerned with
syntax, semantics and software processes

Rome Declaration
Rome Declaration, 2011 CRIS & OAR
‘We, representing the communities concerned with CRIS and OAR hereby declare:
• That high quality research information is critically important to research
institutions, research funders, policymakers and society at large;
• That information on publicly-funded research should be available, shareable
and integrated seamlessly;
therefore we commit:
• To develop, support and promote an architecture (including data model and
services) suitable to pursue these principles;
• Jointly to adopt, develop and promote applicable open standards;
• To advocate these principles among all stakeholders.

CRIS-IR at St Andrews Key dates
October 2005 Launch of Research Expertise Database as central publications database and CRIS (Current Research Information System) for the University. Software written in house. Primary role in RAE data gathering.
December 2006 Digital Research Repository launched for electronic theses. Thesis deposit for doctoral theses is mandated by the institution.
May 2007 Research Expertise Database to Digital Research Repository integration demonstrated at the the euroCRIS members meeting in Stockholm/Helsinki
March 2008- New version of Research Expertise Database launched with batch import facilities for Web of Science and Bibtex format metadata
2009 Further development with inhouse system or third party? Decision to replace inhouse CRIS with vendor system. Procurement process with Aberdeen and decision to purchase PURE
September 2009- Implementation phase
Summer 2010 – Launch of PURE
Spring 2011 – Launch of Research Portal
COAR Annual Meeting, Istanbul, May 7-8th 2013 Anna Clements, University of St Andrews & euroCRIS
Pure integration with dSpace
• PURE offers all the metadata input we require to feed into the repository
• Add value by adding a generic subject classification scheme to publications
• Passes through a licence
• Workflow done in PURE and not DSpace, includes the quality control for metadata and the copyright checking for Open Access
• LNI – pretty crude interface
• Transfer to collections based on the institutional structure
• Ability to have a dark archive of publications in PURE and our Open Access archive in the repository.
• Time embargoed publications kept hidden in PURE until they can be released OA into the Repository
• Handles returned to PURE and are available in the PURE portal
COAR Annual Meeting, Istanbul, May 7-8th 2013 Anna Clements, University of St Andrews & euroCRIS
Pure integration with dSpace
• Should we continue to integrate?
• Technical issues with connector eg
update ability limited
• What does the IR offer that the CRIS
doesn’t?

• Barriers to interoperation
• No data architecture
• Not planning to interoperate
• Too many ‘standards’; too many IDs
• Vendor interest / lock in
• Priorities – Top 3 – next 12 months
• Require suppliers to plan & interoperate
• Standard data architecture -> data model &
vocabularies; is DC it or should we demand
more?
• Review use cases… what is important to
the users
