Great Goodbye wins ‘Best Event’ in Journal’s Culture Awards

Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon has won The Journal’s Culture Award for Best Event in Durham.Mallard 75 – The Great

Goodbye at Locomotion, was the finale to a series of UK events which were part of the National Railway Museum’s Mallard 75 project, held in February

2014, marking 75 years since the iconic steam lo-comotive Mallard broke the steam speed record on 3rd July 1938. The culturally prestig-ious nine day event was attended by nearly 120,000 (119,049) visitors, and based on data from the museum’s annual visitor survey, 30-35% of those attending would have travelled from outside the North East region.The Culture Awards were held at Sunderland Minster on Tuesday 30th June when hundreds of people gathered to watch the best of the North East cultural quarter recognised and rewarded for their work during 2014.Sixteen trophies, made by Gateshead artist, Corinne Lewis-Ward, were handed out in a range of catego-ries.The museum beat off stiff competition in its category, including Steam-song, another event com-missioned to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Mallard breaking the steam speed record.

Town Councillor passes awayShildon Town Council has paid their respects to Town Councillor Muriel Gordon, who sadly passed away on 21st June following a short illness.Muriel, nee Hillary, was born in Foundry Street - one of 11 children. She met her husband David at a dance in Heighington in 1966, marrying three years later in 1969.Muriel’s jobs over the years included a Machin-ist position at Block & Anderson and manager of MIND in Newton Aycliffe, where she stayed for 18 years until she became ill. She was also a qualified Reiki Master and a regular church goer. As an active member of Shildon Town Council she represented the Sunnydale Ward, as well as holding the position of Deputy Town Mayor.Her Husband David, who is also a Town Councillor, described his wife as having

lived a full life, making lots of lifelong friends along the way.Town Mayor, Cllr Matthew Burdess said, “Muriel was not only an exceptional individual, she was also a first class elected repre-sentative for the town. The thoughts and prayers of all her friends and colleagues at the Town Council are with her family at this ex-tremely sad time.”

Saturday 27th June saw the Community of Shildon out in force as Saint John’s Summer Fayre recorded their highest number of visitors ever. Opened by Shildon Mayor Matthew Burdess, the Fayre had a Victo-rian theme, a tradition of costume and fun stretching back over 60 years. With cake and tea in plenti-ful display the Mayor spoke of his delight in seeing a

community event where all ages were represented, both in the visitors and amongst the volunteers. Revd. David commented that the Saint John’s Summer Fayre, supported by Shildon Town Council, was ‘truly a town event, a community coming alive’.Lanchester Brass band played in the sunshine of the Church’s quiet garden and the many who sat and listened spoke of the

days when Shildon’s own BR silver band could be seen at events throughout the town. But this was an event that looked forward as well as back with un-precedented numbers of young people helping and enjoying the day. PCC member Adele Todd and coordinator of the Fayre said, “So many people have helped make this day special, we will be saying thank you all week!”

Year 6 children at Prince Bishops Community Primary School held a fashion show on Wednesday 24th June, to raise money for housing and homelessness charity Shelter. The children up-cycled old and used clothes to make new outfits, which they

then paraded in front of the other children and their parents. Teachers also joined in the fun, donning outfits the children had designed and made for them. The event was a great success and raised £97 for the charity.

Miss Dawson, who coordi-nated the show said, “The children had great fun designing and making the outfits. They have been learning about charitable acts in RE and decided that they wanted to help the homeless. They raised an amazing amount of money.”

A story dash has taken place around Newton Aycliffe and Shildon.Linking in with National Bookstart Week, One Point staff from Durham County

Council’s children’s centres in the two towns dashed between local schools and nurseries reading stories.This year’s theme was ‘Rumble in the Jungle’

and, as well as the story, a range of activities includ-ing craft activities, animal hunts and jungle related rhymes kept little ones amused.

Summer fun funds

On the afternoon of Saturday 27th June, a Shildon man was the driver of a stolen Vauxhall Vectra which failed to stop for a police traffic officer. He made off from the police vehicle before making his way at high speed along Middridge Lane and then Church Street. The driver continued to evade police through the streets of Shildon before heading towards Coronation, Close

House and Auckland Park. By this time the police helicopter had been scram-bled and gave assistance from the air. He eventually decamped from the vehicle with his male passenger on the Bishop Auckland bypass and they were both arrested. The driver was later charged with aggra-vated vehicle taking and dangerous driving along with a number of other driving offences.

Thornhill Year 6 celebrate leavers prom in style

Year five children from all three primary schools in the town enjoyed a ‘Keep Healthy, Keep Fit, Keep Safe’ event at Shildon Meth-odist Church on Thursday 11th June.The youngsters enjoyed a Zumba fitness session thanks to local housing provider livin, and a smoothie bike brought by Local Motion, while PCSO David Evans talked about

general safety and let the children try on an array of police equipment. The pupils also received goodie bags from Shildon Commu-nity Safety Group.Gemma Williams from the Safety Group, who organ-ised the event, said, “It was a very successful and well attended day and we would like to say a big thank you to livin and Local Motion, as well as the Method-

ist Church for providing healthy snacks for the children.“We would also like to thank Asda for providing water for the children, Sainsbury’s for donating bananas, Tesco for giving us a £10 voucher which bought the fruit for the smoothie bike and Andrew Ferguson from Bramble Fruit Shop in Shildon for donating a crate of delicious apples.”

Thornhill pupils looked fantastic in their finery at their leavers party.Year 6 pupils from Thorn-hill Primary School were dressed in their finest to celebrate the end of their primary school career at their leaving prom on Friday 26th June.Teachers went along to the event at Elm Road WMC too, including Mr Cluskey who was in attendance

to say goodbye to all his pupils. One leaver and her sister put on quite a show by arriving at the party in a very different way. Isobel and Charlotte Coulls turned heads as they reached the club on the back of an 1893 steam traction engine!

A spokesperson for the event commented, “All of the children made a real effort and were dressed for the occasion.“Special thanks go to Clare and Michelle who worked hard to organise the evening, and to the DJ for making a very special night.”

Radio Tees came to Shildon last week, broadcasting from the town for the whole morning on Thursday 25th June. Organised through Shildon Alive (A Saint John’s Church Project) the broadcast was led by DJ Mike Parr and was based in the Shildon Alive hub in Church Street.Visiting local business ‘Sweet Greetings’ and talking with Christopher Bowman, chair of the local chamber of trade,

the broadcast presented a positive upbeat picture of the community. “The kids here are amazing”, said Youth Worker Naomi Tomlinson when asked what her fa-vourite thing about Shildon was, and on Thursday it was Saint John’s CofE (Aided) Primary School’s turn to be out in the town Guerrilla gardening. When interviewed by Mike Parr, the children spoke well of their town and hopes for

the future. Offering Mike a cup of tea, Revd. David stressed, “The work of the church is about seeing this community flourish, seeing the many good things come to the fore, because as one person cares so does the next and the one after that too.” The hub was buzzing all morning as people popped by to say hello and there was a palpable sense of pride as people spoke about their community.

Harry donates 100th pint of blood

Harry March has donated 100 pints of blood over the past 50 years.

A Shildon man has been recognised by the National Blood Transfusion Service after donating 100 pints of blood.Harry March, of Lime Grove, gave his landmark donation on 19th June, having helped save lives since his first donation at the age of 18 in 1966. Harry received a certificate for his fantastic

At about 1.30pm on Thursday 25th June, an elderly lady was subject to a theft in the Secondz shop on Church Street. It is believed that two women were responsi-ble for the theft, which involved them slashing open the lady’s shopping trolley and stealing her

Shildon hosted the NYSD Youth Development League on Sunday which saw athletes having to deal with adverse blustery con-ditions. In the u13 girl’s 100m Isabel Forster came 3rd in her race, finishing in 15.2 seconds followed by Amyleigh Hutchinson in 15.7 seconds. Kayleigh Readman finished her race in 5th place in 16.0 seconds. In the 200m Leah Ruther-ford finished 3rd in her race in 32.6 seconds, a time which Kayleigh Readman emulated in her race. She was followed by Isabel Forster in 33.4 seconds and Amyleigh Hutchinson in 34.1 seconds. In the Long Jump, Kayleigh jumped a PB 3.77m finish-ing 2nd in her string whilst Leah jumped 3.70 to finish 1st in her string.Isabel also produced a PB

jumping 3.55m. In the shot Isabel produced another PB throwing 4.48m. The 4 girls later put on a spirited display competing in the 4x100m relay finishing 4th in 60.4 seconds.In the U13 boys 1500m Adam Hanby finished 3rd in 6.09.01 whilst in the shot Adam threw 5.6m to finish 4th.In U15 girls 100m Rachel Bennett equalled the League record winning in 12.8 seconds, whilst Maddie Wells won her set in 12.9 seconds. Rachel later completed the double by winning the 200m in 27.5 seconds.In the U15 boys 100m Kyle Walton continued to make progress in his return from injury finishing 4th in 13.4 seconds, whilst in the 200m he finished 4th in 28.2 seconds. Charlie Dixon competed in the 300m fin-ishing 3rd in 44.9 seconds

and returned to the track to compete in the 800m where he finished 2nd in 2.29.0 seconds.In the U17 girls 100m Courtnie Mills celebrated victory in 13.5 seconds and repeated this feat in the 300m, finishing in 43.0 seconds. Lewis Marley was involved in two of the closest and most thrilling races of the afternoon in both the U17 boys 100m and 200m. In the 100m Lewis came from behind to finish quickly, crossing the line in an identical time to 2 other athletes but was awarded 1st place in 11.8 seconds. The 200m produced an identical finish to that of the 100m involving the same 3 athletes with Lewis again making ground up towards the finish with all three being given a time of 24.1 seconds, Lewis being awarded 2nd place.

An emphatic win over nearest title rivals Norton was marred by a nasty injury to Shildon’s wicket keeper batsman Adam Jenkins last weekend. Opening the batting, young Adam, who captains the club’s junior Under 18s side, went for a pull shot, only to top edge the ball through the visor of his helmet causing a large gash to the area around his right eye. Adam was taken immedi-ately to hospital by club sponsor and supporter John Pollock but, despite being released after treatment, the promising youngster needs to return to hospital as there is blood behind the eye. “We’re all very concerned for Adam and wish him a full and speedy recovery. Accidents like this happen now and then but we’re confident that Adam will soon be playing again,” said a club spokesman. Back on the field, the Rail-waymen seemed even more determined to beat the second placed club and the side raced to 330 for the loss of five wickets in only 45 overs. The Upton brothers just missed out on centuries with Bret 94 and skipper Greg 93 leading the way and a quick fire 62 from Michael Lumley helping the team to the mammoth total. Norton’s reply was solid and the team were obviously not

Preston on Tees have pulled out of the F15 Competition and so last Wednesday’s game did not take place, which leaves “the boys in pink” Shildon Locos, spon-sored by Middleton Road Garage, to make their debut in the competition next Wednesday at Stokesley. The 2nd team returned to league duty with Sunday’s home game against Whitby and seven wickets by Peter Stanwix ensured victory, keeping the side in a top four place in Sunday Division 2. Saturday sees the first team at home to Wolviston and on Sunday, the second team visit Marske. On Monday the Under 15s are at home to Brandon and on Tuesday the Under 18s visit Tudhoe.
