BEFORE THE GAME:

1. Arriveatthegroundwellbeforethescheduledstartofplayandintroduceyourself toyourfellowscorerandtotheumpires(ifthereareany).Ensuretheumpiresare awareofyourscoringposition.

2. Asascoreryoushouldalwaysmakesureyourscoringpositionhasaclearviewof theentireground,butespeciallythepitchandumpires.Ifyouareoutsidetrytofind somewhereprotectedfromtheweather(wind,sun,rain).

3. Ifyouarethe‘home’scorerletyourfellowscorerknowwherethescoringposition isandthelocationofthetoilets,canteen,etc.Thetwoscorersmustsittogether duringthematch.

4. CheckwithyourCoach/Captainandwritedownalistofyourteam’splayers (preferablyinbattingorder)andprovideacopytoyourfellowscorer.Theywilldo thesamefortheirteam.Writethislistinyourpad/notebookandnotinthe scorebook/scoresheetsatthisstage.Recordwhohaswonthetossandwhether theyhavechosentobatorbowl.

5. Makeyourselfcomfortableinyourscoringpositionandcompletetheheadingsin thescorebooke.g.BLACKCAPSvAUSTRALIA,Date,Umpires,Scorers,1st InningsofBLACKCAPS,etc.

AT THE START OF PLAY:

1. Identifythebatsmanthatistakingstrike.Dothesameforthebowlerandrecordtheir namesintheappropriateplaceinthescorebook.Itisgoodetiquettetosharethis informationwithyourfellowscorer.Alsoshareanydistinguishingfeaturesofthe batsmen/bowlersandnotethemonyourpad,especiallyifyou’renotfamiliarwiththe teams/players.

2. TheUmpireswillcallandsignalthestartofplay.Tosignalthestart ofplaytheUmpirewillraise one hand high above his head with an open palm.Youmustacknowledgetheirsignalasthisistheir checkthatyouarereadyforplaytocommence.

3. Ifyourteamisbattingitisalsogoodetiquetteforyouto‘callthe game’bytellingyourpartnerwhatishappening;e.g.“1runtoMcCullum”,“2byes”,“3 runstoGuptill”,etc.Thisteamworkwillhelptomakesureneitherofyoumiss anything.Ifyoufeelthatyouoryourfellowscorerhasmissedsomethingletthem knowimmediately.Itisalwayseasiertocorrectmistakesastheyhappenratherthan findingthemlater,whenmoremistakesmayhaveoccurredasaconsequenceofthefirst.

4. Everyballthatisbowledmustberecorded.Alwaysrecordwhathappensafter acknowledginganysignalstheumpiresmaymake.Onoccasionstheumpirewillmake twosignalsafteraball;e.g.,‘NoBallandFourRuns’or‘NoBallandBye’.Bothsignals mustbeacknowledgedbeforerecordingthem.

5. Thereareanumberofwaystoacknowledgetheumpiressignalsbutitisrecommended thattheyarekeptassimpleaspossible,eitherbyasimplewaveofthehandhigh abovetheheadorwavingawhiteclothhighabovethehead.Whateverwayyou choose,maketheumpiresawareofitatyourpre-matchmeetingwiththem.

DURING THE GAME:

1. Itisgoodpracticetohaveregularcheckswithyourfellowscorerasthegame progresses.Itisrecommendedthatyoucheckthebowlingfiguresattheendofeach over.Oneofyoushouldsaye.g.‘5runsoffthebowler,whohasthefiguresof0for5, teamtotal5’.Afterthenextover‘4runsoffthebowlerwhohasthefiguresof0for4, teamtotal9’etc.

2. Aftereveryfiveoverstheindividualbatsmen’sscoresshouldalsobechecked.

3. Theseconstantchecksarevitaltothesuccessfulbalancingofthebooksattheend oftheinningsandmatch. 4. Ifyouareunsureofthenatureofadismissalorthenameofacatcherdonotmake anunduefuss.Itcaneasilybesortedoutatthenextavailablebreakinplayi.e.drinks breakorendoftheinningsbycheckingwiththeumpiresand/orplayers.

5. InbasicscorebooksalwaysrecordrunsinTHREE PLACES.Thebatsman’sline,the bowlers’lineandtherunningtotal.ItisveryimportanttoALWAYSrecordtherunsin thesamesequenceaftereveryrun;e.g.,2tothebatsman,2onthebowleranalysis,2 offtheteamscore.Youwilldevelopyourownsequencebutconsistencyhelpswhen thepaceofthegameacceleratesasitreducesthelikelihoodoferror. 6. Thereareseveralwaysthatthebattingteamcanaddtotheirtotalscoreierunsmade bythebatsmen,no-balls,wides,byes,legbyes,penaltiesandofcourseitispossible tohavenorunsoffaball.Asimplescoringmethodforeachoftheseeventswillbe presentedinthenextsection.

7. Attheendofthecompletedfirstinningstallythebatsmen’sscoresandaddany extras.Tallyallthebowlers’totalsandaddanybyesorlegbyes(andpenalties). Thesetalliesmustbalance,thencheckthattheycorrespondtothetotalyouhavein the‘teamtotal’.Checkyourtotalswithyourfellowscorerandwhenyouaresatis- fiedyouhavereachedanagreedtotalforTeam1,informtheumpiresandbothteam captains.Oncethishasbeendoneyoucanthenhavesomerefreshmentsandatoilet break.

8. Continueasaboveforthesecondinnings.Attheconclusionofthisinningsrepeat step7.Althoughyouandyourfellowscorershouldbeawareofthetotalyoumust alwaysbalancethebatting,bowlingandteamtotal.Onceyouhavebothreachedan agreedtotalinformtheumpiresandbothcaptainsoftheresultofthegame.

9. Asyouscorethegameyouwillgetplentyofquestionsastotheindividualbatsman’s totals,bowlingfiguresandteamtotaletc.Onlyreplyifyoufeelcomfortabledoing so.Ifitbecomesannoying(oryoufeelunderunduepressure)justpolitelyaskthe persontoleave.Yourjobasascoreristorecordeveryball,anditsconsequences, thatisbowledduringthegame.Tothatendyouwillneedcompleteconcentration.
