Troopers sent to absent senators' hon1es

Bv Steve Schultze of the Journal Sentinel

Feb, 24, 2011 7:21 a.m. i State troopers were dispatched earlv this morninq to the homes of al l 14 Democratic state senators, whofled the Capi tol a week ago to stall deba te on a bill to res tr ic t publi c worker bargaining rights,

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) said he took the move because he'd had reports some of the senators weregoing home niqhts and driving in the morning to Chicago, The Democrats have said they left Wisconsin to avoid being compelled to

return to the Capitol and face a vote on Gov. Scott Walker's budget repair bill.

"Troopers aren't going to arrest anybody," Fitzgerald said, He hopes the Democrats if confronted by a trooper and a Senate page

will comply with Senate tradition and rules and return to the Capitol .

I t would only take one of the 14 Democrats to give majority Republicans a quorum so the budqe t bill can be voted onl .

Fitzgerald said he would not would immediately bring up the budget bill fo r debate as soon as one of the absent Democrats can bebrought back to the Capitol -,>BgSl£LE!dlLi2tQQ.PQ.st(97)

Hi David-

We oversee Capitol Police here, not state patrol, so that question should actually be directed to SenatorFitzgerald's office. (608) 266-5660

Hi Carla, thanks for getting back to me.

The question I had is that I see the associated press is report ing "state patrol officers are beingdispatched to the homes of multiple Democratic Wisconsin state senators in the hopes that will forcethem to come back in session."

Is that correct?

SUbject: Call of the house

Carla:

We're hearing rumors that Capitol Police have refused to go after Democratic senators. Can you saywhat role, if

any, Capitol Police have in a call of the house? The general belief here isthe State Patrol is responsible for

tracking lawmakers down, but we don't know for sure.

If Capitol PD does have a role in a call ofthe house, can you say if they have refused to go after lawmakers or

have otherwise refused to carry out their duties?
