Dear Friends and Family of Haverford Crew, Welcome to the Fall 2015 Newsletter! We’re excited to discuss the end of our spring season, as well as outline the remainder of our Fall season. The team had an excellent spring season, highlighted by three successful regattas: the Kerr Cup, the MARC Championship, and the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. We capped off our graduating seniors’ final seasons with several podium finishes among our varsity boats, and our novices’ showed the results of their year of hard work with their impressive final races.

Kerr Cup Results
After a successful scrimmage on our home river against Bryn Mawr and Susquehanna, our first major regatta of our spring racing season was the 49th annual Kerr Cup, hosted by Drexel University on the Schuylkill River in downtown Philadelphia. The Kerr Cup is a 2km sprint race, which means a group of boats start at the same time and race to the finish. By comparison, the Head of the Schuylkill in the fall was a head race, where boats start staggered and their times are compared. Sprint races lead to intense finishes, for spectators and rowers alike. Our men’s novice 4 and women’s novice 8 both fought hard in their races. Unfortunately, as they were both in the open event, their heats were stacked with Division I teams, and neither team was able to advance. The men’s varsity 4 cruised to a second place finish in their 6 boat qualifying heat, beating a number of local rival schools, This qualified them for the grand final race, where they stayed competitive to the DI schools in the event. The varsity women entered the Varsity DIII Women’s 8 event, where they comfortably won their qualifying heat, qualifying them for the grand final. In the grand final race, they sped to a 3rd place finish in the event.

MARC Championship Results
We next traveled to Lewisberry, PA, for the MARC (Mid Atlantic Rowing Conference) Regatta, which is our conference championship. This race against our closest rivals is the perfect capstone on a year of hard work. We were especially appreciative of the numerous parents who came from all across the country to support the team, making the day even more special. The women’s novice 8 began the day strong, with a dominating first place finish in their qualifying heat. In their grand final, they placed 4th, missing the medal podium by mere seconds. The men’s novice 4, in their first ever race as a boat, placed 4th in their heat. Their strong time was enough for them to advance to the grand final. A blistering final sprint brought them to 4th place in the final stretch of their own grand final, and they too missed the medal podium by only seconds. This ended an excellent year from our unusually large freshmen class, and we are excited to see the group make the transition to our varsity boats this fall. Our top women’s boat stormed out of the gates in their final race of the year, cruising to a comfortable first place finish in the Women’s Club 8+ event. This meant that our graduating women capped off their collegiate rowing career with gold medals in the club event. In the Men’s Varsity 4+ event, the men’s 4 took a comfortable first place in their heat, qualifying them with a high seed. In the grand final, they trailed at 4th place with 500m to go. However, a strong final sprint brought them into 3rd place, and a medal finish.

Dad Vails Results
The varsity men’s 4 competed in one final race of the season, the Aberdeen Dad Vail regatta. Dad Vail is the largest collegiate regatta in the world, and we wanted to give our graduating seniors a memorable final race. The Men’s Varsity Heavyweight 4+ event had a staggering 59 entries, from a variety of Division I, II, and II schools from Canada to Florida. The men were unable to advance from their qualifying heat, however their time was strong enough to beat 32 of the 58 other entries in the event. Racing against some of the continent’s elite rowing crews was an awesome experience, and we hope to return to Dad Vail in the future.
Alumni Feature: Kylen Solvik One of our graduating seniors, Kylen Solvik, put his training to serious use just days after graduation, as he embarked on a hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,663 mile wilderness trail that stretches from Mexico to Canada, through the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountain ranges. We are happy to report that on September 23rd, Kylen successfully crossed the Canadian border, completing his epic journey after just 128 days. We are all very proud of what Kylen has accomplished, and can’t wait to see what he plans next.

Fall Season Preview
We are in the middle of an excellent, productive Fall season! We welcome back
returning Head Coach Valeria Gospodinov, and returning Women’s Coach Brian Mulholland. Our recruiting efforts resulted in an excellent class of new novices, and we look forward to teaching them the joys of rowing, as well as continuing to develop the skills of our returning veterans.The capstone of our fall season will be the Head of the Schuylkill regatta, held on October 24th on the Schuylkill River right in downtown Philadelphia. We are excited to field entirely new novice eights for both the men and women, as well as varsity boats with another season of rowing development. This is an excellent regatta for spectators, and in the past we have enjoyed a ton support from friends and family, so if anyone is interested in spectating, feel free to shoot us an email with any and all questions at [email protected].
