  • M ay 17 th is the last day of

    school for many students; however the summer is filled with additional opportunities for chil- dren. Crete Public Schools will provide educational programs for approximately 300 students during the month of June. Most of the participants will be of elementary age; although, middle and high school students will also partici- pate. Summer school for grades K-8 will be held at the current mid- dle school due to construction. School staff members also re- main very busy. As mentioned, many teachers will be teaching over the summer and others will be completing curriculum work as well as taking graduate level courses. Administrators remain active assisting with classes, par- ticipating in the curriculum work as well as the busy task of supervis-

    ing a large amount of building projects. The business of education truly is a 12 month job. My hope is that students enjoy a well de- served break from the regular classroom. However, learning opportunities abound everywhere one may look. These can in- clude continued work in places like the library, attending a varie- ty of camps or other school-type environments. I also believe plenty of learning can take place just working, i.e. helping with the family business, detasseling, and household chores.     zens. Learners will demonstrate academic and communicative skills necessary to navi-

    gate new challenges while providing support for their families and communities.

    Please make sure your children have money in their lunch accounts.

     Beginning May 6, 2016 students will not be allowed to eat if they don’t have money in their account.

     Money that is left in your account at the end of the year will be carried over to next year. Lunch refunds will be made only to graduating seniors with no sib- lings in school and families that are moving out of the district.

    Elementary On May 16 the elementary students

    will have their awards ceremonies.

    Awards will be presented for aca-

    demics, attendance, citizenship,

    spelling, reading and other areas.

    Kindergarten awards will be pre-

    sented at 9:00 a.m., grades 1-2 will be at 10:00 a.m. and

    grades 3-4 will receive awards at 1:30 p.m.

    At 2:45 p.m. on this same day, all students will move up to

    their next year’s classrooms to meet their teachers and hear

    about their curriculum. This is a very exciting and nervous

    time for the children but it also helps soothe the nervousness

    of the first days of school.

    Enclosed within this newsletter is a copy of the 2016-17 school

    calendar. The Board of Education approved the calendar dur-

    ing their February meeting.

    The term “flex days” are listed upon the calendar and are best

    described as days which will be used as vacation unless it is

    necessary to make up instructional time due to previous in-

    clement weather closings. The district allows two inclement

    weather days before vacation days (flex days) are used to make

    up missed time. This includes dismissing school for appear-

    ances at state tournament competitions.

    Please save this calendar for future references. A similar cal-

    endar has been created on google docs and can be accessed on

    the Crete Schools website. A more comprehensive school

    calendar listing multiple extracurricular activities will be dis-

    tributed in hard copy at the beginning of the 2016-17 school

  • HS Awards Ceremonies The high school will have two separate award ceremo-

    nies on Wednesday, May 4, in the HS auditori-

    um. Students in grades 9-11 will be honored at their

    awards ceremony starting at 1:30 p.m. Students in

    grade 12 only will be honored at their awards ceremony starting

    at 7:00 p.m. Invitation letters will be mailed to parents who have

    a son or daughter receiving recognition that day.

    Summer School

    Summer school for students who are invited will be from May 23—June 17. All summer school classes will be held at the current Middle School.

     Students in grades K-4 will attend classes from 8:15 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

     Students in grades 5-8 will be in session from 8:30a.m.-Noon.

     All newcomer ELL students in grades 5-8 will attend school from 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

    Students who live within Crete city limits will be provided transporta- tion for a fee of $10. For questions regarding summer school, please call Lisa Fye 402-826-5844 or Maricela Flores at 402-826-7894.

    Free Summer Meals for

    Children Age 3-18

    Summer is coming soon and you may be thinking about what

    your child will do for meals while school is out. The good

    news is that the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners

    with Crete Public Schools to serve FREE meals. It’s food

    that’s in, while school is out. There are no income require-

    ments, and any child age 3-18 may come to eat. No adult

    meals served. Here is information about your local Summer

    Lost & Found

    Please check the elemen- tary lost & found boxes for any items that your child is missing. All items left on May 17 will be donated to a local charity.


    If your child has medication in the nurse’s office it needs to be picked up by 12:00 noon on May 17. Any medi- cation left that day will be disposed of.

    Southeast Community College will offer Driver Education for Crete High School students July 18-22 and August 1-5, both sessions are ONLINE ON- LY. Online lecture will meet for a total of 20 hours. The drive lab meets for a total of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. Drive lab choices are for two

    hours at a time Monday through Saturday, starting

    at 7:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 4:15 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

    Driver Education brochures are available in the Crete High School office. Registration and a fee of $265 must

    be turned in to Jack J. Huck Continuing Education Center. Class textbooks “How to Drive”, must be purchased directly from SCC Bookstores for approxi- mately $28. Students must have a school or learner’s permit from DMV by the first day of class. Students who attend all classroom instruction and meet the minimum requirements for written and drive tests will receive documenta- tion to satisfy insurance requirements and/or the provisional operator’s per- mit.
