SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
The Annual Report is intended to provide a snapshot of the 2011-12 school year. All of the en-
closed information has been reported at various times through the past year; however, never be-
fore combined within one document.
A timely release of this report allows the District to incorporate State testing results, which is em-
bargoed information, several months after the end of the school year. Crete Public Schools takes
great pride in the outstanding services provided to our students and community. Please feel en-
couraged to visit any of the District programs as well as contact me personally, if I can ever be of
assistance.
Thank you,
Kyle McGowan
SCHOOL BOARD
Establishing school policy to promote the mission and goals of the dis-
trict is the primary purpose of the school board. Regular board meetings
are held on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. and follow all
established open meeting laws as required by Nebraska legislative stat-
ute. The public is always welcome to attend and speak during the public
comment period.

The School Board continues to emphasize the
importance of small class sizes in the primary
grades. The 2011-12 school year included: 9
sections of half-day preschool, 7 sections of
kindergarten, 6 sections of 1st grade and five
sections of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. Preschool
had an average 16 children per teacher. A
teacher assistant is also included within every
classroom.
The chart indicates enrollment increases PreK-
12 since the middle school opened in 2005.
As enrollment increases it becomes imperative
to conduct long-term planning in order to ad-
dress the demands for both facilities and staff.
The district completed a facility study to assist
with long-term planning. They will make a
recommendation to address the growing enroll-
ment.

Statewide Writing Test
In February 2012 fourth, eighth, and eleventh
grade students participated in the Nebraska
Statewide Writing Test [NeSA-W]. Crete
students have improved scores considerably
since the test was implemented in 2003-
04. All grades met the federal performance
requirements for the 2011-12 school year.
Statewide Reading, Math, and Science Tests The charts demonstrate student performance on our
state ( NeSA) tests in Reading, Math, and Science. In
math and reading we have included the state average
along with Crete Public School’s average scores at each
grade level taking the test. We have added a column
showing the growth achieved at each grade level from
the previous year’s scores. A growth column was not
included for science because 2011-12 was the first year
for this test.
Norm-Referenced Testing
Students take part in norm-referenced testing in
grades 3-8, where they take the Stanford test. High
school students take part in the PLAN test their
sophomore year. The elementary and middle school
tests include math, language arts, social studies and
science while the PLAN at the tenth grade includes
math, language arts, and science.
The percent of students scoring at the fiftieth percen-
tile or above in each area for Crete Public Schools is
shown on the chart.
In 2012-13 Crete Public Schools began using a new
test in place of the Stanford; the Measures of Aca-
demic Progress (MAP) test. We will include data
from this new assessment next year.
Activities
The Other Half of Education
The Nebraska Schools Activities Association (NSAA) classifies Crete as a
“Class B” high school. Currently 32 schools make up Class B. The district
offers a wide variety of activities and clubs well beyond the supervision of the
NSAA. In addition to athletics and fine arts, many clubs such as World Lan-
guage, Future Scientists, Robotics, etc. are enjoyed by high school students.
The elementary and middle schools also promote positive activities which
encourage academic and physical development.
