Career Clusters are groupings of occupations used as an organizing tool for course selection. The career clusters are designed to help students find courses that are aligned to student interests and possible career choices. Instruction in a career cluster prepares learners for a full range of career opportunities within the career cluster, focusing on critical knowledge and skills that are transferable as new opportunities arise and the industry changes. Nationally, 16 career clusters are recognized with 79 career pathways that are sub-groupings of occupations. This collection of career clusters and pathways present a way to categorize thousands of occupations currently available. Programs of study represent a sequence of instruction that prepares students for post-secondary goals and interests. Every student will create a program of study/4-year plan with his/her counselor.

The Career Clusters framework is an approach used by schools to orient career exploration and career guidance, select curriculum offering, show relevance of academic courses, and engage community civic and business leaders in partnerships. Career Clusters are valuable in supporting effective transitions between secondary and postsecondary education by impacting the design of programs of study offered by a school. (www.careerctech.org)

Each Career Cluster™ represents a distinct grouping of occupations and industries based on the knowledge and skills they require. The 16 Career Clusters™ and related Career Pathways provide an important organizing tool for schools to develop more effective programs of study (POS) and curriculum.

WEBSITE DESIGN I/IILength: YearCredit: 1 credit hourYear: 10-12 Prerequisite: Successful completion of one technology courseCourse Description: Semester 1: Students will study the makeup of a well-designed website. Students using Adobe Dreamweaver will learn how to incorporate text and images into a website. Students will also learn how to establish links, tables, and other components that help to create a well-designed website. By the end of the course, the students will design their own personal website and prepare it for publication onto the Internet.

Semester 2: In this semester, students will learn advanced techniques in website design such as adding forms, sounds, and Java scripts to websites. Students will learn how to use Hyper Text Mark-up Language to design a website. Students will also learn how to prepare a website for publication to the Internet and how to maintain and update a site once it is published. Students’ culminating activity will be to prepare a website based upon research completed in one of their courses. This course may qualify for dual credit with Prairie State College.

The topics studied include organization of business, business environment, management of employees, marketing, financial management, information for business strategy, and special topics. Driver Education is open to sophomores, juniors, or seniors who meet the requirements specified in the course description of Driver Education. A student who successfully completes the course is eligible to obtain a Graduated Illinois Drivers License upon reaching age l6. All students must complete Driver Education prior to graduation.

1. The State of Illinois requires that each student pass at least eight courses during the previous two semesters before enrolling in Driver Education. Any student who does not meet this requirement is not eligible to take this course.

2. Any Crete Monee High School student enrolling in a private driving school must also meet the academic requirement before doing so. An eligibility form must be completed and signed by the Crete Monee Guidance or Driver Education Staff.

3. To be eligible for first semester, a student must have been born on or before March 31, 2000. All other sophomores will be registered for second semester. A summer session is also available.

4. Students in Driver Education must have applied for a Social Security card, obtain permission in writing from a parent or guardian, and be able to pass the written and vision tests provided by the State of Illinois Examining Station before they will be able to obtain a permit to drive

Course Description: Students gain knowledge, skills, habits, and attitudes necessary for the safe operation of a motor vehicle. It is the parent’s or guardian’s responsibility to give final approval for the student to take the State Driving Test at the Examining Station. Each student must receive 30 hours of classroom instruction. A student who is absent six times will be dropped from the course.

Physical Education Expectations:Class participation is essential for student success in

physical education. Students are to be dressed in a school issued physical education uniform and will be held accountable for being in class on time and ready to participate. They apply their knowledge to real life situations. Completion of this course satisfies the state requirement for a quarter of consumer economics.

Semester 2: Students gain knowledge about the purpose and function of American government at the national, state and local levels. As they gain an understanding of governmental processes set forward in the United States and Illinois Constitutions, students address such issues as the influence of lobbyists, integrity in politics and de facto segregation. Students learn about responsible citizenship through interaction with local politicians, news articles, editorials and political cartoons. The United States and Illinois Constitution tests will be given during this course. Passing these tests is required by the State of Illinois in order to graduate. Passing this semester also fulfills the state of Illinois’ civics requirement.

Students will also have a better understanding of their leadership style and how to continue their growth and personal development. Students are placed into Special Education classes after being determined eligible for services through psychological evaluation, professional staffing, and the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP). A continuum of services is offered ranging from consultative to instructional levels. In addition, classified students are given an opportunity to gain personalized instruction to assist them in passing their regular high school courses or to receive remediation in their areas of assessed deficiencies via the Resource class. This is a graded, credit-bearing class that is scheduled every period of the school day.

To maximize the time allotted in the school day, instruction will be multidimensional. The curriculum will mirror that of the departmentalized special education program at Crete-Monee High School. The primary focus will be on the academic areas of English, Science, Math and History. Additional course work in the areas of Driver’s Education and other selected topics will be provided based on student needs as determined by transcript review. Those students who have fallen behind in credits required for high school graduation will be given an opportunity to complete this course work via internet and correspondence classes. Academic credit will also be assigned to those students holding employment as part of the high school Work Studies Program.

In addition, the Multi-Needs Program is available for high school aged students who are diagnosed within the trainable to Intellectually Disabled range and/or whose limitations are primarily due to pervasive developmental disorders and autism. Students may also exhibit physical, vision, and/or hearing disabilities. Multi-Needs Program provides an environment where students can demonstrate their potential in the areas of communication, socialization, daily living skills, mobility, and pre-vocational activities.

Course Description:This course will cover the major units found in the regular education Health outline but will not explore them in as much detail. Units covered in this course are mental health, safety, first aid, communicable diseases, old age, death, sexuality, ecology, drugs, and alcohol. In addition, students will be provided with information related to differential diagnosis of learning difficulties and become familiarized with the IEP process.

DRIVER EDUCATIONLength: SemesterCredit: 0.5 credit hoursPrerequisites: Driver Education is open to sophomores, juniors, or seniors who meet the requirements specified in the course description of Drivers Education. A student who successfully completes the course is eligible to obtain a Graduated Illinois Drivers License upon reaching age 16. All students must complete Driver Education prior to graduation, but no credit hours will be awarded for passing the course.

1. The State of Illinois requires that each student pass at least eight courses during the previous two semesters before enrolling in Driver Education. Any student who does not meet this requirement is not eligible to take this course.

2. Any Crete-Monee High School student enrolling in a private driving school must also meet the academic requirements before doing so. An eligibility form must be completed and signed by the Crete-Monee Guidance or Driver Education Staff.

3. To be eligible for first semester, a student must have been born on or before March 31, 2000. All other sophomores will be registered for second semester.

Course Description:Classroom (required for graduation):Students will be taught the basic rules and laws of driving. Other areas being covered are pre-driving habits, basic car controls and maneuvers, visual skills for driving, decision-making skills, and general information in driving in urban, rural, and expressway areas. Adverse conditions, emergency procedures, physical and emotional effects of driving, driving

under the influence, basic maintenance of a car, and types of car insurance will also be covered. Students must complete 30 hours of classroom to be credited. A student who is absent six times will be dropped from the course.

Behind-the-Wheel (this portion is optional):Understanding of the car controls, driving maneuvers, parking, city, rural, and expressway driving and a driving test will be given in a six-hour program. A Learner’s Permit is required to be enrolled in this portion of the program. To receive a Learner’s Permit a student will need the following:

1. Behind-the-Wheel fee paid or waived to the school

2. Social security card and official birth certificate

3. Parent permission (on application form)4. Pass State of Illinois written and vision tests

at any Illinois State examining station

INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATIONLength: SemesterCredit: 0.5 credit hoursPrerequisite: Classification and Administrative ApprovalCourse Description:This course will teach students how to use Public Transportation effectively. The course will inform students what type of Public Transportation methods there are in the area where they live and how to contact them for information, schedules and rates. The course will cover the following areas of Public Transportation: Bus, Train, Taxi and voluntary local support groups. The course will also inform students how to read schedules, figure out rates, and safety precautions to take on Public Transportation. The student may experience (with a possible field trip) a pre-planned supervised trip to a certain destination using Public Transportation and the information covered in class.

TRANSITIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

The transitional education program is designed to assist students to achieve their maximum potential by preparing them for attainable career goals. It is a vocational training program that prepares students to transition to employment or community participation during high school through a variety of supervised work experiences in the school and in the community. This program enhances students’ ability to work independently by developing the desirable work habits, social and personal skills needed to maintain successful employment. Students who work outside school have staff supervision in community-integrated work environments such as Governor’s State University, Crete Library, and various work sites.

TRANSITIONAL WORK SKILLS

The Transitional Work Skills, STEP (Secondary Transition Education Program), is offered to junior and senior students in conjunction with the Department of Human Services. It affords students the opportunity to work within a school setting to achieve work related skills. The program is designed to promote a successful transition from high school to post-secondary education or employment.

identified with a disability. These classrooms are staffed by special education teachers. Mainstreaming in education typically includes these services to students with special needs. These students require special instruction in an individualized or small group setting for a portion of the day. Individual needs are supported in resource rooms as defined by the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Special education teachers in a resource room focus on particular goals as mandated by and IEP and remediate general education curriculum. Our programs emphasize the development of executive skills, including homework completion and behavior.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

KACC in Bourbonnais, Illinois, offers a variety of career and technical education courses for junior and senior students who have exhibited both good attendance and appropriate behavior their freshman and sophomore years and who are on track to graduate. CMHS students are eligible to enroll in a 2-year program beginning their junior year. CMHS students attend Session 3 from 12:55 to 2:40 p.m. CMHS provides bus transportation to and from KACC. Upon their return to CMHS, the 4 p.m. bus will be available Monday through Thursday to take students home. On Fridays, the bus from KACC will take students directly home with a stop at the high school. KACC education is paid for by District 201-U, and supplies or additional costs for a specific course are to be paid for by the student.

KACC’s vocational education courses teach students to be productive and adapt to a rapidly changing workplace by teaching many transitional and employability skills. These skills are taught in all courses and include:

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGYTechnology in the automotive field has changed tremendously since the 1970’s when solid state ignition and finally computerization came into full operation. The “shade tree mechanic” has become a part of history. The mechanic of today needs to understand principles of diagnosing problems before attempting repair. The Career Center utilizes an interrogator that not only diagnoses, but takes the technician mechanic step by step through the process giving verbal instructions.

This course begins at the basics of auto mechanic repair and the maintenance of automotive equipment. The main principle of an automotive mechanic is preventive maintenance. Preventative maintenance is best achieved through proper care and through diagnosis of failure, necessary adjustment and of course, repair or replacement of required parts. Most mechanics are responsible and have the ability to work on the total vehicle, yet others choose to specialize in such areas as transmission maintenance, brakes, front-end alignment, exhaust systems, drivability, etc.

KACC’s Automotive Technology program is designed to prepare the student to enter the field of auto service and repair. Much emphasis is placed on helping students learn to work as much as possible as a mechanic meeting and addressing a variety of new and different problems with each vehicle encountered. All of the various components and systems of the automobile will be covered including the engine and drive train, fuel systems, brake systems, electrical systems, etc.

Dual Credit Opportunities: Following successful completion of two years in KACC’s Automotive Technology program, students have the potential to earn 4 semester dual credit hours at Kankakee Community College for course AUTO 1064: Internal Combustion Engines and 4 semester hours for KCC course AUTO 2243: Alignment, Steering and Suspension. Beecher High School and Crete-Monee High School students will have an opportunity to earn 3 credit hours at Prairie State in AUTO 101: Basic Automobile Service & Systems. Peotone High School students may earn 3 dual credit hours for AS106: Automotive Fundamentals at Joliet Junior College.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT/PRESCHOOLThe Child Development/Preschool Program offers an opportunity for training, experience and time with children as students learn a variety of skills in the childcare field. In addition to developing professional skills in this rewarding field, students have an opportunity to develop competency in basic principles of child growth and development, engage in hands-on experiences with 3, 4 and 5 year-olds in KACC’s onsite preschool lab and actively participate in

planning and implementing activities within our lab.

Students gain skills and knowledge in areas such as guiding the behavior of children, child growth and development, preschool operation, safety procedures, first aid knowledge and are exposed to a variety of career profiles in home, public and private teaching settings. The student plans and implements activities designed as formal lesson plans, to be utilized in the preschool. Students experience acting as both a teaching team-member and a leader. Second-year students may have an opportunity to gain experience through an internship/job shadowing at a local daycare/preschool facility.

Dual Credit Opportunities: Following successful completion of the first year of Child Development, students have the potential to earn the Gateways to Opportunity Early Childcare Education Level 1 credential issued by the State of Illinois. Depending upon county of residence, students who successfully complete the second year may also have the potential to earn 3 dual credit college hours from Kankakee Community College (CDEV2263: Heads Up Reading); or Prairie State (ECED 105: Creative Activities for Children).

COLLISION REPAIRDuring the first year of this program, learning experiences are designed to allow students to gain knowledge and skills in repairing automotive bodies and fenders. Planned learning activities in this course are balanced to allow students to become knowledgeable in the fundamental aspects of auto body repair methods and techniques, and to develop practical skills in the basic operations required to prepare the automobile for final paint application. Instruction emphasizes safety principles and practices, hazardous materials, auto body nomenclature, function of individual component the use of parts, manuals, the identification of replacement parts, use of auto body fillers, plastic/glass fillers and special body repair tools, refinishing problems and paint preparation procedures. Practical activities relate to experience in writing and calculating damage estimates, removing and installing body panels, trim and glass, straightening by using hammers and dollies, and smoothing by filling, grinding and using fillers. Students also learn to prime the area to be painted and prepare the surface for final paint application. These experiences and skills are related to metal, fiberglass or urethane components.

The second year provides experiences designed to further enhance the students’ skills in performing more advanced tasks related to automotive body and fender repair. Learning activities in this course emphasize the successful application of the final paint coat and the preparation that precedes it. Emphasis is also placed upon the identification and correction of imperfections and finish buffing of the final coat. Student learning activities include instruction in safety principals and practices, hazardous materials, types and qualities of paints, colors, and refinishing problems; glass standards and installation, special alignment techniques, customer relations, damage estimating and insurance adjustments. Student practical activities relate to experiences in estimating collision damage costs, preparing customer bills, removing and replacing glass surfaces, selecting paints, repainting minor and major damages, post-paint cleanup, and post-paint polishing. This course also allows students to experience more design-related auto painting utilizing an air-brush application.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY I THEORY, REPAIR AND BUILDINGIn this program, a solid foundation of theory on how a computer and other peripherals work is covered. Students receive instruction and hands-on experience in repairing or replacing faulty mechanical or electronic parts and giving technical advice on ways to keep equipment in good operating condition. A+ LabSim Test Out online software is also used for simulating PC building and repair (This same software is utilized by most colleges). After completing this program, the student will have an opportunity to go on to become A+ Certified and PC PRO Certified. Students also receive instruction in the area of installing basic networks.

Dual Credit Opportunity: Successful completion of this program allows students the potential to earn 4 credit hours at Joliet Junior College for CIS275 – PC Troubleshooting & Toolbox. COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY II(NETWORKING AND THE WORLD WIDE WEB)This course builds on the skills introduced in Computer Technology I. Students learn how to connect and install multiple computers and peripherals together to create a computer network. Students build, configure, and maintain network servers along with installing and configuring various network operating systems such as Windows Server. Students learn to use troubleshooting services, system monitoring utilities, and data backup and recovery systems. Other topics include learning how to connect various network components such as servers, computers, and printers together using data cabling, hubs, and switches. Students learn to run, terminate, and troubleshoot data cabling. In addition, students learn how to install and upgrade software across the network, as well as map drives and share resources such as printers, software, and files. The course includes setting up and configuring various network services such as TCP /IP, DHCP, DNS, VPN, terminal services, e-mail and web services. Students learn how to secure and protect network servers and data as well as setting up and configuring a firewall, intrusion detection system, and encryption software for identifying and preventing potential network attacks. CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGYStudents in construction technology build and maintain structures ranging from rough scaffolds, concrete forms and residential electric to homes that require exact finish work. They work with wood, metal, plastic and concrete. Using both hand and power tools, people in the construction trade erect wood frameworks for buildings, install window frames, apply exterior siding and install moldings, cabinets, doors, heating and cooling systems, plumbing and hardware finish. Construction Technology education gives the student the opportunity to participate in the different phases of residential construction. This helps the student decide which trade or craft they would like to serve an apprenticeship.

During the training program, students construct houses on-site and will be involved in all phases of construction. The program is designed as pre-apprentice training and will include the following areas of construction: carpentry, masonry, plumbing, heating, roofing, landscaping, painting, decorating and electrical wiring. The student receives both classroom and on the job training.

C.N.A. TRAINING PROGRAMStudents enrolled in the Health Occupations C.N.A. Training Program at KACC can become a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) The Health Occupations I program at KACC is taught by Registered Nurses (RN’s) who are certified to teach the CNA program through the Illinois Department of Public Health. Nursing Assistant - Care Long-Term Care

KACC SCHOOL OF COSMETOLOGYThe KACC School of Cosmetology provides the training necessary to become a licensed cosmetologist. While earning hours toward licensure, students have the opportunity to acquire the skills needed in order to perform services on customers in our full-service salon, which is open to the public.

First-year students receive instruction in both theory and practical application in professional development, salon ecology, chemistry, trichology, design decisions, hairstyling, haircutting, chemical texture, hair color and sanitation. Don’t worry – you will still be working with clients in our salon too!

Unlike other high school programs, students continue through the summer until mid-July continuing to work within the salon while studying anatomy and physiology, electricity, nail technology and esthetics as they relate to cosmetology, while earning more of those hours toward licensure.

During the second year, students will build upon the knowledge and skills attained in year one and continue both classroom and hands-on experience with customers in our salon, in the areas of shampooing, make-up, facials, hair treatment, hairdressing and hair shaping, hair chemistry, manicuring, pedicuring, sculpture nails, and permanent waving/chemical straightening.

The Cosmetology Program is under the instruction of professional cosmetologists, licensed to teach the Cosmetology program under the rules and regulations established by the Department of Professional Regulation. The program provides for 1500 hours of training which, is the minimum requirement needed in order to take the State Board Exam for licensing. This includes two full school years, Saturday hours, the summer session between junior and senior year, as well as the summer session following high school graduation school.

Required tools/supplies:Students are responsible for purchasing an equipment kit for the first year, second year, and for both summer

sessions. The items provided in the kit are required to progress in the class. Kit fees first and second year, are due on or before the first day of class. Kit fees and tuition for the summer sessions are due no later than the first day of summer school class. These kits meet industry standards and are sold at our cost. Payment plans are not offered, however, we accept credit card payments. Students will not be enrolled nor will they be able to earn hours toward their Cosmetology license until appropriate fees are paid.

DRAFTING + 3D DESIGNManual drafting and computer aided drafting (CAD) is used in many professions to develop ideas and then transfer them to drawings. The drawings then enable others to produce or construct the final product or assembly..

The Drafting + 3D Design program at the Career Center is a two-year program offered to juniors and seniors. Even though this course is designed around a two-year curriculum, sometimes students can only fit one year into their class schedule, and are welcome to attend. Students will learn the fundamentals of the design process used by architects and engineers and how drafting aids that process. Students will have an opportunity to work independently, engage in team projects as well as collaborative projects with other programs within the Career Center.

During the first year, the program focuses initially on sketching, manual drafting and AutoCAD.

Students will learn how to manually sketch and draft two and three-dimensional geometric shapes. They will then move on to more complex drawings of houses, machine parts and other types of engineering and architectural designs. Students will learn computer aided drafting utilizing Sketch Up and AutoCAD software programs.

Second-year students may choose to focus on either engineering or architecture. They will have the opportunity to job shadow and intern with professionals in their field of interest. Students will become more proficient in AutoCAD and will learn to use 3D software programs utilized by engineers (Solid Works) and architects (Revit).

Dual credit opportunities:Students who successfully complete the first year may have an opportunity to earn dual college credit at a community college within their home school district as follows: 4 hours of dual credit with Kankakee Community College for DRFT2114: CAD 1; Beecher High School and Crete-Monee students may have the opportunity to earn 3 dual credit hours from Prairie State College for CADMD 243: Intro to Auto CAD.

FIRE /RESCUEThe Fire/Rescue program is set to follow the State of Illinois fire Marshall’s Office Division of Standards for entry-level positions in the fire and rescue field. Students learn how to use self-contained breathing apparatus in addition to the safe and proper use of ropes and knots, ladders and hoses. Using a special smoke trailer, students are exposed to simulated fire conditions within a safe environment. They learn how to perform a search and rescue operation, auto extrication and how

to safely remove victims of automotive crashes.Second-year students will begin leadership skills training as Company Officers. They will build upon the skills developed in the first year and learn about detection and suppression systems. Second-year students meeting grade and attendance standards will also have the opportunity to participate in KACC’s Emergency Medical/First Responder Program. This program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and has been developed in coordination with our local Hospitals, Presence St. Mary’s and Riverside Medical Center. Some students earn the opportunity to go on an internship gaining that real-world experience in the day-to-day operations of a firehouse.All students will receive training for Hazardous Materials for the First Responder and CPR/AED for the Health Care Provider through the American Heart Association.

This course follows all the standards of the Illinois State Fire Marshall, Illinois Department of Transportation and the American Heart Association.

Students who are thinking about this program need to be aware - this program is very physically demanding.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY & SKILL DEVELOPMENTThis course is designed to provide students with a sequence of organized learning experiences and skills to prepare a person to recognize the signs and symptoms of illness and injury to review the approved and appropriate life-support procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and will become First Aid certified through the American Heart Association. The course will also include skill development to prepare students for a variety of health-related occupations.

Students will learn how to identify medical terms by analyzing their components. Emphasis will be placed on defining medical prefixes, root words, suffixes and, abbreviations. The primary focus is on the development of both oral and written skills in the language used to communicate within healthcare professions.

Students may qualify to participate in an internship program at local extended health care facilities if they have successfully earned their Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification.

Dual credit opportunities: Following successful completion of this Medical Terminology and Skill Development Course, students may have the opportunity to earn 2 Semester Credit Hours for course HLTH1312: Medical Terminology at Kankakee Community College for students in the KCC district and, for Beecher and Crete Monee High Schools, 3 credit hours for HLTH105 Medical Terminology at Prairie State College. WELDING TECHNOLOGYWelding is one of the most important crafts necessary for the manufacturing and construction of various products such as buildings, ships, aircraft, storage vessels, power plants, automobiles, etc. Everything from Nuclear Reactors to the toaster found in your kitchen is made possible by the process of welding.

Careers in the field of welding contain a wide range of possibilities. There are certified welders, fitters, inspection and design professionals, welding engineers and those who are involved in study and development of new metals and joining processes.

Salary opportunities in the welding field are excellent. You can go as far as your skill sets and knowledge will take you.

During the first year, the welding program will consist of exercises using the oxy-acetylene, shielded metal arc, gas metal arc and flux cored arc welding processes in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions. You will also gain experience in the separation of

metal using the oxy-fuel and plasma processes. The study of welding symbols, blueprint reading, joint design and metallurgy are also included.

The second year focuses on advanced application of first year study in the vertical and overhead positions using the various processes as well as an introduction to pipe welding in the 2F, 2G and 5G positions. All welds will be subject to a guided bend test.

American Welding Society: The Kankakee Area Career Center’s Welding program is a member of the American Welding Society S.E.N.S.E. (Scholars Excelling through National Standards Education) program. The S.E.N.S.E. program establishes standards for the training of entry-level welders.

Upon successful completion of the S.E.N.S.E. curriculum:

• First year students will receive a SENSE Level 1 Certificate

• Second year students will receive a Sense Level II Certificate

There is a $15.00 fee from the American Welding Society to receive the SENSE Certificate of Completion.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMThe Internship Program provides an opportunity for the business community to form an educational partnership with our school and our students. Instructors, students, and business mentors work together to provide students with continuous learning and real-life experience through a cooperative plan of classroom and on-the-job educational experiences in the student’s chosen career field. Students apply for the program during the second semester of their junior year. The Program Coordinator reviews the applications,

interviews the students, gathers the necessary information, and works with business partners to place the student in a career-related job. Students work at the internship site at least two days per week and a maximum of three days per week. They attend their related class a minimum of two days per week. Successful completion of the Internship Program provides students with some of the following advantages:

• Encourages development of real-world employability skills, responsibility and maturity for students

• Increases student motivation• Results in improved job entry placement

and advancement opportunities for graduating students

• Provides more opportunity for interaction with adult role models

• Decreases drop-out rate • Provides opportunity for career exploration

EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM AT PRAIRIE STATE COLLEGEThis program allows students to take a minimum of three classes at Prairie State College (PSC) in the morning and then be transported back to Crete-Monee High School (CMHS) to complete their high school graduation requirements. First semester, all students must enroll in College Success Seminar, English 101, math and an elective. All students participating in a winter or spring sport or activity must enroll in a 1 credit hour PE course to meet IHSA eligibility requirements. Second semester, all students will enroll in English, math, and a communications course. Students have the opportunity to acquire college credit while meeting the requirements necessary for graduation.

Probationary Enrollment: After the completion of Compass testing for the Early College Program students who qualify for English 101, but do not qualify for a math credit course may be accepted into the Early College Program as a probationary student. This acceptance is contingent upon the student qualifying for Math 95. The student must also have minimally achieved a C in two semesters of Geometry. Probationary students must pass 1st session of Math 95 developmental with a C and register for a credit bearing math course for the spring semester in order to remain in the Early College Program.

Enrollment in the program is not guaranteed. PSC limits the number of participants to 60 students. Acceptance into the program will be determined by the qualifications of the applicant, and the classes that are available. In the event that more than 60 CMHS students qualify, priority enrollment will be given on the basis of GPA, PSC placement test score, and past attendance record. Students admitted to the program must earn a “C” or better in both math and English to remain in the program second semester.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONFrom nausea to neuroscience, from fevers to forensics, the ever-advancing world of medicine spans from the common to the exceptional. The biomedical field has never been for the faint of heart or mind. However, countless professionals are relied on daily to ensure our physical, mental, and emotional health. The students of today will take the place of those profes-sionals tomorrow, and they will need to be ready to respond to health challenges of the future – many that do not even exist today.

Knowledge in biomedical sciences paves the way for a wide range of careers. A small sample of recent gradu-ates who completed at least one PLTW Biomedical Sci-ence™ course reveals the array of opportunities: some students pursued post-secondary studies in microbi-ology, pharmacy, chemistry, nursing, nutrition and dietetics, or neurobiology; others enrolled in medical or dental school; and others began careers in forensic science or started research projects focused on immu-nology and cancer. These careers are personally and professionally rewarding. They are also challenging and require a deep understanding of how to apply sci-ence, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to solve complex problems.

How do we prepare students to investigate medical cases, understand treatment and intervention options, and seek solutions to the world’s biggest health chal-lenges?

The rigorous and relevant four-course PLTW Biomedi-cal Science sequence allows students to investigate the roles of biomedical professionals as they study the concepts of human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health. Students engage in activities such as investigating the death of a fictional person to learn content in the context of real-world cases. They examine the structures and interactions of human body systems and explore the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, all while working collaboratively to understand and design solutions to the most pressing health challenges of today and the future.

Each lab-based course in the Biomedical Science sequence builds on the skills and knowledge students gain in the preceding courses. Schools offer the three PLTW Biomedical Science foundation courses over a period of three academic years from the start of imple-mentation and may also offer the capstone course.

Foundation Courses

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE (PBS)In the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.

HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS (HBS)Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on MANIKEN® skeletal models; use data acquisition software to monitor body functions, such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration; and take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases.

MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS (MI)Students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through cases, students learn about a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.

Capstone Course

BIOMEDICAL INNOVATION (BI)In the final course of the PLTW Biomedical Science sequence, students build on the knowledge and skills gained from previous courses to design innovative solutions for the most pressing health challenges of the 21st century. Students address topics ranging from public health and biomedical engineering to clinical medicine and physiology. They have the opportunity to work on an independent research project with a mentor or advisor from a university, medical facility, or research institution.

Automotive Technology: Learn the basics of auto mechanic repair & maintenance. Students will learn to diagnose and repair a wide variety of automobiles. Students will also learn preventative maintenance. Opportunity to earn Dual Credit with Kankakee Community College or Prairie State at no additional cost. Child Development/Preschool: Training focused on professions dealing with child care and teaching. Students will obtain knowledge of basic principles of child growth/development with special emphasis on preschool age children. Students will be engaged in hands-on teaching with 3, 4, and 5 year olds. Students are required to have a 1-Step TB Test at their own expense by the first week of KACC Classes. Opportunity available to earn their Level 1 Early Childhood Education Credential from Gateways to Opportunity. Dual Credit Opportunity for second- year students at Kankakee Community College or Prairie State. C.N.A. Training: Students can become a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant), following successful completion of this program taught by Registered Nurses (RN’s). Program includes theory; accompanied by 2-days per week in a clinical setting. Those who qualify will take the CNA Certification exam in May. Collision Repair: Designed to allow students to gain knowledge and skills in repairing automotive bodies. Computer Technology: Instruction and hands-on experience repairing or replacing faulty mechanical and/or electronic parts, giving technical advice on ways to keep equipment in good operating condition, moving on in year two to setting up and configuring network services such as TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, VPN. Opportunity to be A+ Certified and Dual Credit with Prairie State at no extra cost. Construction Technology: Opportunity to participate in the different phases of residential construction. Students construct an actual home on-site and are involved in all phases of home construction. Successful students are well prepared to take their cosmetology license exam following this program and go right into the workforce. Drafting + 3D Design: Learn the fundamentals of design used by architects and engineers, and how drafting aids the process. Student will learn both manual drafting tools and computer aided drafting (CAD). Access to professional software (Google Sketch Up, AutoCAD, Solid Works and Revit). Second-year students will be given an opportunity to specialize in either on an architectural or the engineering drafting area with potential for job shadow and intern. Fire Rescue: Follows the State of Illinois Fire Marshall’s Office Division of Standards for entry level in the fire and rescue field. Students will learn the basics of the fire service how to use self-contained breathing apparatus, ropes and knots, ladders and hoses. Students will be exposed to simulated fire conditions under a safe environment and to do a search and rescue, auto extrication, and how to safely remove victims of automobile crashes.
