CRESSE
Conference
CRESSE Conferences provide an annual forum for the presentation of the latest ideas in Competition and/or Sectoral
Regulation.
The primary objective is to give the opportunity for the presentation of high quality academic research both through the
presentation and discussion of recent individual papers and through Keynote Lectures by leading internationally
recognized academics that provide more wide-ranging perspectives on specific topics.
A second objective is to provide an opportunity for academics (economists, legal experts) to meet and exchange ideas
with policy makers and practitioners – particularly representatives from Competition Agencies, consultancies and developing
countries. An important vehicle for doing this is the organization of Special Policy Sessions/Round Tables bringing
together academics, policy makers and consultants to discuss specific highly topical issues of Competition Policy.

answer difficult questions about the practical matters they come across in their work in an economically and legally informed
manner.
The School provides a comprehensive account of the most up-to-date developments in economic theory, empirical analysis,
legislation and policy in the areas of competition and regulation. Participants of the Summer School join a vibrant community

Testimonies 24
I really enjoyed CRESSE. It was such a
privilege to be there and I learned a ton. I
like how CRESSE Summer School provides a
crash course on essentially all of the main
strands of competition policy. The
Conference was an awesome perk! There
were so many high-calibre speakers and
highly topical sessions. It was great to
attend and to network with some of the
speakers over lunch/dinners. I found the
whole experience to be immensely
rewarding. I will be a big champion of
CRESSE!!
I think that some of the Competition Bureau
lawyers would also benefit from this as they
often have to work closely with economists
and interpret economic theories and
evidence.
I liked how the Advanced Short Courses
provided an option to go more “in depth” or
“technical” on a particular topic like
quantitative techniques. Given the
heterogeneity of our group it made sense to
make these “optional” – our group from the
Competition Bureau certainly took
advantage of them!

CRESSE
Lawyers‟ Course
The Lawyers‟ Course is targeted to lawyers practicing in competition law as counsels, enforcers or judges or in another field of
law in which knowledge of economics is helpful.
As such, the course does not require students to have any prior knowledge of economics or quantitative techniques.
Lectures rely on verbal descriptions and graphs which convey key concepts. Special emphasis is given in drawing on case
examples in order to review and apply the economic principles and methods.
Objective of the course
To introduce the economic theories that underlie competition law
To introduce the methods and tools that are used to assess whether business practices are socially harmful or benign
To enable participating lawyers to communicate effectively with economists
To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of economic concepts and theories, how they are applied to
competition policy and a solid grounding in the tools and methods used in the examination of specific cases.

especially interesting and relevant to the concerns of our
new Commission.”

the idea and organisation of the Lawyers

on "The Role of Economics in Competition
Law and Practice" extremely interesting and
helpful for competition law practitioners. The
quality of the lecturers exceeded all
expectations. A combination of teaching
skills and the enthusiasm of academics with
practical experience in applying economics
in a competition law environment helped in
understanding issues that are sometimes very
difficult for lawyers. Needless to say, the
event greatly promoted Corfu as a summer
destination for travellers.
Thank you and best regards”
