Joe Young and Gayle Taylor applied to and
were accepted through Earthwatch to visit Uganda,
staying in Kampala, the capital. Their living quar-
ters were at Research Center, which had been trans-
formed from an abandoned sawmill. Six excited
visitors, with Joe being the only male in the group,
on a well-organized expedition helped researchers
track and detail chimpanzees, feed sick baby goats,
and travel through dense forests, take a river cruise
in a metal boat – mindful of streaks of lightning il-
luminating the cloudy sky.
They rose usually at 5:30 in the morning and
spent most of the day trekking through dense, yet
beautiful forests populated with iron wood trees to
obtain details of the chimpanzees. Gayle stated that
her neck got sore looking up. One day, they spent
11 hours looking for chimps for 11 hours and not
finding any. They were lucky one day to find the
Sonso family of chimps. (Researchers knew all the
chimps by name.) Even though they couldn’t get
near the animals, they marveled at seeing these fascinat-
ing with characteristics reminiscent of small children.
An interesting aspect of their travels was their
armed escorts needed for trips even to the post office –
not for people but for the hippos that presented a danger.
Baboons are strong, ubiquitous, and are pests.
They were known to boldly enter homes, through an
opened window, and snatch clothes. Chimps, on the oth-
er hand, were described as magical and cute. The chimps
didn’t bother them. Someone left a window opened and
a baboon entered and stole things.
People living in nearby villages were typically
poor. They had farms so they had food. But money
scarce. So, to earn money, they cut down iron wood
trees converting the wood into charcoal, which is for-
bidden by Ugandan authorities. Iron wood is extremely
dense and very heavy.
They went out on snare patrol one day. The snares
were used to catch antelopes but chimps became caught
in them. It was not all work and no play. They visited
Murchison falls on the Victoria Nile river, and during
their final hours Research Center, had a party where they
drank warm “Nile” beer.
