A Putnam County deputy with two years service with the agency has been terminated following an adminis- trative investigation into his shooting at a fleeing vehicle. On September 29, at approximately 11 p.m., deputies responded to a residence on Royal Way in Interlachen, in response to a report of a possible burglary in progress. While re- sponding to the res- idence, deputies re- ceived information from the reporting par- ty that the suspect was driving away from the residence and heading toward State Road 20. Deputy Brandon Culbreth observed a Blue Dodge truck leav- ing the area and at- tempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. Deputy Cul- breth reported that the vehicle attempted to flee the area, losing control, striking a field fence, and ultimately directing the vehicle back toward deputy Culbreth. Deputy Culbreth fired several rounds from his agency issued handgun disabling the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot and has yet to be apprehended or iden- tified. Detectives with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit respond- ed to the scene and conducted the criminal investigation. The Florida Depart- ment of Law Enforce- ment Crime Scene Unit assisted in the inves- tigation by processing the suspect’s vehicle. It was determined the truck was struck by eight bullets. Two bul- lets struck the pas- senger side tires, three bullets struck the tail- gate of the truck, and three bullets struck the rear window of the truck. The administrative investigation into the incident determined that Deputy Culbreth violated the agency’s vehicle pursuit and use of force policies. It was determined that Dep- uty Culbreth lacked good judgment by con- tinuing the pursuit of a vehicle without being provided sufficient de- tails of a crime or de- scription of the vehicle. Deputy Culbreath ob- tained the vehicle’s tag number and driver’s appearance and could have used the infor- mation at a later time to identify the driver. His continued pursuit caused the fleeing ve- hicle to drive recklessly into residents’ yards. The investigation also revealed that even though it was appar- ent the driver of the vehicle was attempting to evade capture, the scene where the shoot- ing took place did not indicate the driver’s in- tent was to endanger Deputy Culbreth. The rounds fired by Depu- ty Culbreth occurred while the vehicle was passing or had already passed him. The in- vestigation revealed the use of deadly force in this incident was in violation of agency policy. About a week ago, I got a call asking me if I would like to do a cover story on the Iron Man. My first thought was, “Hollywood here I come!” So I said, “Yes. So where do I have to go?” Mike, from the Putnam County Cou- rier Journal, said, “He lives right here in Putnam County!” At first I was a lit- tle confused because I know that Robert Downey, Jr. doesn’t live in Putnam Coun- ty. Now, this next part is no joke. We don’t have an actor living in Putnam County that plays Iron Man on the big screen, but we do have the real deal. As a matter of fact, just as the Iron Man in the comics and on the big screen flies over cities protecting people from the evils of this world, like terrorist and peo- ple that would do us harm, so does our own Iron Man. Like most kids, I grew up reading com- ic books and watch- ing cartoons and t.v. shows that featured American superheroes, like Spiderman, Bat- man, Superman and Iron Man. Iron Man came on the scene in March of 1963. His real name is Tony Stark and his main function was to fight corporate crime and terrorism. Iron Man’s creator was Stan Lee. Lee was also the story-plotter, and working along side him were Larry Lieber, the scripter, Don Heck, the story artist, and Jack Kirby, the cover-artist and character-design- er. Enough about the original comic charac- ter, let’s get to the real Iron Man. Please allow me to in- troduce to you the real “Iron Man,” Command- er Flint Brady. Before we go any further, I know what you’re thinking, “How can he fly over cities and fight crime?” Brady is a helicopter pilot in the U.S Navy. Your next thought is probably, “How is he the Iron Man?” Well, have you ever heard of the Iron Man Competitions or triathlons? If you hav- en’t, please allow me to give you a few details before I get to Brady’s story. The Iron Man Com- petitions are held all over the world, and only the most fit would ever dare to enter this competition. The Iron Man Competitions are basically three parts, swimming, biking and then a foot race to the finish line. The first part is a 2.4-mile swim. Next is a 112- mile bicycle race. Yes, you read that right, a 112-mile race. Finally is a 26.2-mile foot race. By the end of this race we will have traveled 140.6 miles. I don’t know about you but somewhere around the swimming to bicycling event, someone would need to call 911 for me. As I arrived at Brady’s house, he was just getting out of his vehicle. Still dressed in his navy flight suit, with his parachute hanging off his shoul- der and to his left side, I walked up to him and shook his hand. Now at 5’10” I had to look up at him because Brady is over six feet tall, and by the end of my interview he would seem 10 feet tall. As I sat down to do the interview with Brady, I asked him why he did these races. Brady just chuckled a little then said, “Be- cause I got bored with just running.” To me it was like when George Mallory was asked in 1924 by a reporter, “Why climb Mt. Ever- est?” and he replied, “Because it’s there!” If you have ever en- tered a marathon or a long distance run then you might be familiar with the term “hitting the wall.” “Hitting the wall” is a term used by runners when they hit a certain part of the race where their body suddenly becomes fa- tigued and they lose energy. I asked Com- mander Brady if he had ever “hit the wall,” and he said only once. It was this past Jan- uary when he ran a race in Tampa and the weather was almost 90 degrees and he was ex- pecting it to be cooler. He did finish the race and explained to me that it hasn’t happened since because he has the proper hydration and nutrition. Brady explained how he trains for competitions such as the Iron Man. Crescent City Police Department Needs Your Help

The Death of Sargent OrangeDaris Howard

Dear Editor:

These two simple words convey my very sincere and heart felt gratitude to the people of South Putnam community for their help growing Putnam Family Fitness Center of Pomona Park. We recently had another successful fund raiser, a chicken BBQ. What a lot of people may not know is how much volunteer time and effort went into the preparation of that event. Jim Weller, our Master Tae Kwon-Do in-structor, wasn’t asked to cook our chicken that day. No, indeed, he offered. Not only that, but he brought two friends with him. I can’t thank him enough for get-ting up that morning at 5 a.m. and cooking our chickens, some donated by Cow-ards in Palatka. Jim asked for and then towed the large charcoal grill from Howard Topaz’s shop on 17. Howard, incidentally, loaned it free of charge. Thank you.

I cannot be more appreciative of Shirley Griffin from Pomona Park. I have always known that if you need something done, ask a busy person. And this is so true of Shirley. She has been a rock of support for me. She is a humble, capable, and good woman who works without expectation of recognition or glory. When she agreed to take over the preparation of our meal fund raisers, she did it without hesitation. She, too, brought along her friends. Thank you.

Those special individuals who graciously prepared our side dishes and those who served are unsung heroes. Many of them have helped by donating food, money, and time at every one of our fund raisers. Some of you helped with set up and/or take down. Some of you volunteered to make signage or wave signs on the street during the event. Spending Saturdays volunteering for PFFC does not go unno-ticed. Thank you.

I thank our host town Pomona Park for allowing us to set down new roots and for being a friendly environment where we can grow to our fullest potential. Thank you.

It was nearly November, and, as our high school English class was end-ing for the day, our teacher announced the next writing assignment. “For Veteran’s Day, each of you is to write an interview paper. That means you are to interview someone and write about what you learned. The person you interview must be a veteran, and you are to ask them about what it was like to be in the armed services.”

Most of the students groaned. Lenny was particularly vocal. “You mean we have to write something that some old person tells us?”

“I think you might find it more interesting than you think,” the teacher said.

As we headed out the door, Lenny turned to me. “Howard, who are you going to interview?”

“I plan to interview my father,” I replied. “How about you?”“Probably my grandfather,” he said. “But the big problem is once he gets

started talking about the war, he never quits.”Later, when I asked my dad about what it was like in the army, he

laughed. “How does a man explain the army? They try to kill you to make you strong, and they do stupid things just to teach you discipline.”

“Like what?” I asked. He thought a moment, and then answered, “Let me tell you a story.”Basic training had been hard. They had marched and marched and

drilled and marched some more. When it was finally over, they were told they would be allowed a weekend furlough as soon as they could pass inspection.

The first inspection didn’t go well. Their sergeant found something wrong with every soldier. They did another week of marching and drill. Finally, the next weekend came. This time they worked much harder, and still, the sergeant found a few men who had something that wasn’t quite right. Once more, they spent the week marching.

When the third weekend came, everyone was determined to have every-thing perfect. They shined shoes, spruced up uniforms, and worked to get everything to perfection. The sergeant moved from man to man, finding nothing out of line.

When he reached the last man, the sergeant made him open his duffle bag. When he did, out rolled an orange.

“Is food allowed in your duffle bag, Private?” the sergeant demanded.“No, Sir,” the soldier replied.“And let me tell you why,” the sergeant said, getting right up nose to nose

with the man. “The reason is because it would suffocate in there with your socks. I, therefore, declare Private Orange to have died in your duffle bag.” He then turned to the full group of men. “Doesn’t Private Orange deserve a proper burial?”

“Yes, Sir,” the men all answered unenthusiastically.“As soon as he has received his proper burial,” the sergeant said, “you

can all go on furlough.”The sergeant chose the place for the grave, a horrible, hard packed piece

of land. The men took turns chiseling through the soil. After a six-foot deep grave was dug, Private Orange was buried with military honors.

As soon as the service was over, the men quickly filled in the grave and then assembled, excited to go on furlough.

“Well done, men,” the sergeant said. “But did you make sure to bury him face up?”

“What is face up, Sir?” one soldier asked.“He does have a navel,” the sergeant replied. “And a person’s navel is on

the same side as his face.”The men dug up the orange, made sure it was oriented properly, and

buried it again. By the time they finally finished, they only had time for a very short furlough.

When my dad finished his story, he smiled. “Military intelligence is an oxymoron, but they do teach you discipline.”

Dear Editor:

Now that all the jack-o-lanterns are back in storage and the aisles of most stores are full of Christmas decorations, I’ve had time to reflect on the success of this year’s Trunk-or-Treat.

Trunk-or-Treat has become a tradition for many families in South Putnam, whether it’s giving out candy or a destination to go trick or treating. The entire event would not be possible without the generous donations from private citizens and businesses in the form of time, money, or candy.

If awards were given out, Larry Court, Winn-Dixie’s store manager, would receive the MVP award. From the first time I mentioned the event to him, he jumped on board and went above and beyond to support us. It’s great knowing that Crescent City has someone like Larry who is so supportive and giving to our community.

I would also like to thank Erin Delaney and the students in her 5th period art class for the beautiful display they painted and the pumpkins they carved. They were enjoyed by many. Job well done!

So many people gave and I would love to thank each and every one of them, but there are far too many to name them all. Know that your contribution doesn’t go unnoticed and it helped to make the event a success. Those that came out and par-ticipated, thank you for giving your time to the youth of our community. It is always a joy and I highly recommend to everyone.

Here are the businesses that supported Trunk-or-Treat this year:Napa Auto Parts, Tattooing by Sam Snyder, Ace Hardware, Publix, Wal-Mart,

Hill’s Hardware, Helen Laurie’s Antiques Uniques and Obsoletes, First Coast Credit Union, Mike’s Aluminum, Walker’s Small Engine Repair, Pomona Park Pizza, Bank of America, Reiter Insurance, Rick’s Cycle Repair, Center State Bank, Clayton Frank & Biggs Funeral Home, First Baptist Church of Crescent City, Bill Newbold Fern-eries, Harris Lawn Care, Geo’s Auto, Long’s Garage, Winn- Dixie, and the Arnold family.

Thank you all again and I can’t wait for next year’s Trunk-or-Treat.

Rehab Care ClosesA long time rehab cen-

ter in South Putnam is closing its doors after hav-ing served this area for 14 years. Program Direc-tor Lou Ann MacClellan said the Center has served a lot of people and they have made many friends over the years. My late husband, Nick, went there for rehab. He and Shei-la enjoyed discussing the bull riding programs on television. The center will close its doors on Friday, December 15. For more information call 386-698-4720.

Fitness Center NewsBev St. George called to

say Kitty Musser is back teaching dance aerobics at the Putnam Family Fit-ness Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

The Center has three doctors on the board. Well, add Jim Foerster’s name to that list. Foerster has a PhD in Industrial Psychology. Linda McDon-ald started a pole walking class (for people who love exercise and fresh outdoor air paired with walking.) Poles are available, the classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 until 10 a.m.

“Kids Crafts with Kris-ten” is in full swing. Wednesday, November 13, the children, age four to 12, had a lesson on “Christmas Clay Cre-ations.” Saturday, Novem-ber 16, the children cre-

ated a Thanksgiving Tree. If you are interested in signing your children up, do so now, as the class will only run for six week. Call the PFFC for more information or to sign up.

Linda Armstrong has informed the Center that she will no longer provide line dancing instruction. The Center appreciates all she has done for PFFC and she will be missed. They are currently seeking a replacement for her and will notify the members as soon as another will be available.

The Zumba class that was held Fridays, at 3:15 p.m., has been removed, as it is under consider-ation to make the class mobile. More information on that will be following.

The center is holding registration for a boy’s baseball team and a girl’s softball team. Registration at PFFC ends on Friday, December 20, at 5 p.m. The fee is $25 per play-er (a coach’s child will play for free.) Contact Ron Servin at 386-916-7530 for questions, to volunteer to help, or you can pick up the forms at PFFC. They are collaborating with the Parks and Recreation Department of Putnam County to run the pro-gram as they are with the children’s soccer league.

Don’t Forget“Floral Designs with An-

gie,” meets Wednesday, November 20, at noon at the Putnam Family Fit-ness Center to create a Thanksgiving fresh flower display. The cost is $40, which covers instruction, materials, fresh flowers and tools to use. Call 386-

649-8784 for more infor-mation. Check out the Putnam Family Fitness Center’s Facebook page to see what the last design looked like.

Prayer BreakfastOnce a year, the GFWC

Crescent City Woman’s Club has a prayer break-fast to honor the local ministers in the area. About 65 members and guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast, then were en-tertained by Howe Memo-rial Methodist Church, Pastor Ralph Young. Pas-tor Young portrayed the Apostle Simon Peter; it was a very moving and in-spirational performance.

Local ministers in at-tendance were Young from Howe Memorial United Methodist Church, Pas-tor Sam McCoy of First Presbyterian Church, Rev. Joyce Gulliford of Hope Lutheran Church, Rev. Gary Munson of First Baptist Church of Pomona Park, Pastor Howard Cox of Word of Faith Bible Church and Rev. John Andes of Pomona Park

Baptist Church.Beads by Norene

A class was held at the Crescent City Library Sat-urday, November 9, in the Culver Room, taught by Norene Slate on making paper beads. About 20 adults and children at-tended. Another class was held Saturday, November 16, to finish the jewelry. The glue needed to dry before the necklaces could be finished.

Trisha Murphy who writes “Lifestyles” for the Palatka Daily News was taking the class with her grandson, Taylor, and both were having fun. Murphy has been in news-paper work for 38 years. (That tops my 30 years.) I enjoy her column.

Earth DayFriday, November 8,

teachers and students from Middleton-Burney El-ementary school, gathered at Winn-Dixie in Crescent City to encourage custom-ers to use paper bags that they had been working on at school. The children decorated bags furnished, by Winn-Dixie, with their art and own ideas. Store Manager Larry Court and staff displayed the art on the front store window for everyone to see.

Later everyone was served with cookies from the bakery. Nancy Pegg, Billie Joe Carmichael and David Watson, teachers, and representatives from the school, met with some of the children for photos and refreshments.

New Store in Town

A new convenience store, “In and Out,” has opened at Paradise Shores and Highway 17. The hours are Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., Saturday, 7 a.m. until 10 p.m., and Sunday, 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. The store manager is Mike Kassab. Welcome, this building has been va-cant for about four years.

Christmas Bazaar and Silver Tea

First Presbyterian Church in Crescent City will be holding their Christ-mas Bazaar and Silver Tea Saturday, December 7, in the Warner Fellowship Hall, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. There will be cookies with Santa from 9 until 11 a.m. The women of the church always have a lovely collection of plants, baked goods, Christmas decorations, handmade crafts and there will be a drawing as well. So come and visit.

Class of ‘55 MeetSixteen members of the

Class of 1955 from Cres-cent City High School met at Barnacle Bills at noon, Friday, November 8, in St. Augustine, for lunch. Joyce Clegg drove up from Orlando to join the group. She spent the weekend with her cousin, Irene Hundley. They had din-ner Friday night at Belle’s Bistro.

Christmas FestivalDon’t forget the Christ-

mas Festival Friday, De-cember 6, at Eva Lyon Park. Saturday, December 7, there will be a parade and Santa along with chil-dren’s activities.

Tour of Homes

The Christmas Tour of Homes, put on by the Cres-cent City Woman’s Club, will be Sunday, December 8, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The tour will start at the Clubhouse, located at 604 North Summit Street. Tickets are $15. All club members have tickets or you can call Shayne Wil-liams at 386-698-2305.

Church HonorsVeteran’s

During Sunday Ser-vices at First Presbyteri-an Church on November 10, time was taken out to honor all of our service men and women.

Pet Food DriveCrescent City Kennel is

holding a Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Hu-mane Society of Northeast Florida. This is a no-kill shelter that is currently housing 120 cats and dogs and is in desperate need of pet food donations.

You can drop off any food donations at the ken-nel through Saturday, December 7. Any mone-tary donations are appre-ciated as well; you can make checks payable to HSNEFL. They are also in need of cat litter, treats and cleaning supplies. For any questions or more information, please call 386-698-2777 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

November 23, 1988 – World’s Oldest in Palatka - Carrie C. White celebrated her 114th birthday at Putnam Memorial Nursing Home Friday, with plenty of attention. According to the Guinness Book of Re-cords, White is the documented oldest living person. She spent much of her life in a mental hospital before coming to Palatka, accounting for record-keeping stretching back to the 19th century.

Mecklem and he expresses appreci-ation for the response of the motoring public for their patronage. Robert West is station attendant and also is appreciative for the patronage his many friends have favored the station.

November 21, 1963 – Scouts Hike to Beach - Sixteen boys, members of the Boy Scout Troop 42, with their leaders took a 38 mile hike last weekend with all of them completing the requirements for their hikers’ badge. They walked five miles on the first and third days and about 20 on the second. Starting from Crescent City at 2:30 p.m. Friday, they arrived at Flagler Beach and the ocean at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Decked out in poodle skirts and rolled-up blue jeans, students boogied down to the “Hand Jive,” the “Twist” and the “Bunny Hop,” among others. There were roughly 120 in atten-dance for the step back in time. The sock-hop was a fundraiser for the Learning Tree’s new building, slated to open in January. Following the dance performance, there was a dinner and a silent auction.

The crew, hosts and production team fished the St. Johns River for three days, dodging rain and finishing just before the cold front arrived. While Bass Edge is a television show, its website is a large portion of the company. Bass Edge started just six years ago, when host, Aaron Martin, then a financial planner, was talking with one of his clients about his passion of fishing.

Photo by Tasha NewboldSecond graders at Middleton-Burney Elementary School recently completed a unit on sharks. Below is a passage written by student Emme Delaney, who is in Mrs. Knowles’ class, on what she learned about sharks.

‘Sharks are fish but some features are different. Their skeletons are made of cartilage and their skin is rough. Sharks can swim fast because their body shape and their fins are cartilage.

Sharks have fins, gills, and teeth. If their teeth are sharp, they eat meat. If they are flat, they eat plants or shellfish. The features of a shark de-pend on where it lives and what it eats.’

Way Back When...The following arti-

cle appeared in the November 13, 1953 issue of the Crescent City Journal. The building sat near the southeast corner of the intersection of Central Avenue and Summit Street. The footprint of the build-ing is now a grassy lot in Market Square.

Store Has Fire

A blaze of undeter-mined origin about 2:30 Sunday morning damaged the Miller Grocery Store approx-imately $40,000, ac-cording to George Mill-er, Jr., President and general manager of the company. The build-ing and stock were both badly smoked and damaged.

Miss Jerry Cook, who lives in an apartment over the store, was the first to discover the fire. She and her

mother, Mrs. Flossie Cook awakened about the same time and dis-covered their apart-ment filled with smoke. The blaze started in an upstairs storeroom and was confined to the rear of the build-ing where it originated. [Were it not for] The prompt response and the wonderful work of the volunteer firemen and the direction of fire chief Don Coward, no doubt but the build-ing and contents would have been totally de-stroyed.

Chief Coward stated that the dense smoke from burning food hampered the efforts of the firemen in extin-guishing the blaze.

The building is locat-ed on the main busi-ness street in town.

The grocery has opened in temporary quarters until the building can be reno-vated.

kEystonE hEightsruth tuttle

As of 6:35 pm, Novem-ber 11, 2013, Ruth Tuttle peacefully left this world and joyously entered the gates of Heaven. Ruth was born in Barberville, on July 24, 1926, and had resided in Interlachen for the past 41 years, before moving to Park of the Palms in Key-stone Heights.

She and her husband, Johnny, were married 64 years when he passed away in 2010. He was her tap dancing, domino playing, partner who con-sidered himself to be a world-class artist. John-ny’s paintings were often a source of contention be-tween the two of them. He loved to give the paintings to people as “gifts” while

Ruth believed they were the gift people would want to hide in a closet. A cou-ple of months after John-ny passed away, Ruth found one of his paint-ings at a local yard sale. The painting had been left behind in a shed by the original recipients of his gift, convincing all of us that God truly does have a sense of humor. Ruth had a heart for serving and giving. You could al-ways get a hot meal at her home, a place to stay until you got back on your feet. If she had something you needed, it was yours. By the world’s standards she might not have had much to give, but she gave what was truly important, an example of a life based on her unwavering faith in Christ. Equally im-portant, she taught her children the eternal value that comes from accepting Christ as your personal savior.

Ruth was preceded in death by her sister, Edna Baker, and her brothers, Howard “Buck” and Clif-ford Buckles. Left behind to cherish her memories are her children, John (Barbara) Tuttle of Nat-chez, Mississippi, Mike (Stephanie) Tuttle of Dal-las, Texas, Molly (Jim) Mason of Green Cove Springs and Jack Tuttle of Interlachen, two sisters, Grace Gregory and Flor-ence Adams, one brother, Leon Buckles, along with 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Northeast Florida Community Hospice for their compassionate care during this difficult time and The Park of The Palms for the love they showed Ruth while she resided there.

A graveside service, cel-ebrating Ruth’s life was Saturday, November 16, at 2 p.m. in the Hollister Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be sent to North-east Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.

Messages of sympa-thy may be expressed on Ruth’s guest book at www.themastersfuneralhomes.com.

Masters Funeral Home of Palatka was in charge of arrangements.

As the Raiders football season came to a close Friday night, I couldn’t help but feel sad. I not only felt sad for the Raiders football players, but also that this was the last game I would be covering this year. As I pulled up to the field, I could hear both teams warming up in the rain. It was unusual for me to hear this noise so loud from where I parked. As I entered the stadium, I realize why it was so loud.

I looked to the left, and all I could see was Union County football players, at which point I started counting, “1, 2, 3…” and finished at 58 players! Holy cow, these boys were big. In fact, they were the size of college players and they had twice as many players as our 20 or more-man team.

From the kick off, Union County would hold the lead, until the second quarter when Derrick Rasher, #10, would score after a fum-ble recovery. During the third quarter Tim Rog-ers, #3, would score the only other Raiders TD

for the night. By the end of the fourth quarter, it would be Union County 41 to the Raiders 13.

Now, I have to say this, the Union County team was a completely different team than the team I witnessed last year that kept throw-ing cheap shots when ever given the chance. This year, Union Coun-ty seemed to be a more disciplined team.

The problem with Fri-day night’s game was that Union County had fresh players that kept coming in and out the game, whereas a lot of our boys never came out of the game at all. A lot of the boys play offense and defense.

There is one thing that is really bother-ing me, and that is one referee who should be banned from his posi-tion for life. In my 52 years on this earth, I have never seen a more incipient referee.

Not only did he re-fuse to call penalties as Coach Smith was point-ing them out to him, but he would make a call on one of our boys who was running the ball for “holding!” How do you get a call for holding while running the ball?

Now do I think this would have made a dif-ference in the outcome of the game? Not really, but it might have. Not to worry, I did send some 30 bad calls that I vid-eotaped to the FHAA. The bottom line is, we

were just out manned and outsized.

It has been my privi-lege to cover the Raiders football team this year and I want to thank Coach Smith and the Raiders for allowing me to be a part of their team.

Over this past sea-son, I have watched a group of boys turn into a squad of fine young men. Friday night, these young Raiders played their hearts out, and not once did they give up. Every down they played as if they really wanted to win, right up until the buzzer sound-ed.

In my book there is not one star player, but all the Raiders are stars. Each one brought their own talent to the game that would leave them with a 6-4 for the season, making them the district champs.

Not one game this sea-son was given to these young men. Each and every game they played with their hearts and the love of the sport. Most of the time they played when they were still not fully recuper-ated from the previous week’s game.

They don’t have the expensive equipment that most of the schools have, nor population in our city to have a 60-man squad, but what we do have is a group of young warriors with the hearts of a lion, the spirit of past warriors and the love of a sport

called football. What this team real-

ly needs is for us to back them next season. I don’t mean just a few hundred, but every-one on our side of the county. We need to be at every game, and we also need to raise funds to get these young men better equipment so that they can improve their skills.

If everyone in this county could just do-nate one dollar, then they could get the equip-ment that they not only need, but also deserve.

I want to thank Mike and the staff at the Putnam County Courier Journal for allowing me to cover the Raiders this past season and also you, the readers.

I have met a lot of you and it makes me proud to call you my friends. I have said this a few times in the past, and I believe with all my heart that we have the best community in the whole United States.

Also, I want to say, “Hi” to Mrs. Gloria Rog-ers and her ladies who weathered the rain Friday night and who claim to be my biggest fans. Thank you ladies for your kind words.

Well, with a sad heart I have to say goodbye to this year’s Raiders foot-ball games. I hope to be back next year to cov-er the games. So until then, there is only one thing to say and that is, “GO RAIDERS!” and we are proud of you.

November 20, 2013 COURIER JOURNAL Section B

I thought I’d start things off by throwing out my feelings about what is going on with the football program at the University of Florida, and specifi-cally with Wil Muschamp, the “head honcho” who run the program. Florida’s latest loss, 19-14 to the Gamecocks of South Carolina and Steve Spurri-er, is a perfect example of how the fortunes have changed in Gainesville. The program has been slipping since the Tim Tebow era ended, which, in my opinion, was the primary cause of Urban Meyer leaving the program. Now, since Muschamp came on board, with an untested starting quar-terback and other holes in key offensive positions, he wins 11 games his second year as head coach. Some say he was lucky because he caught the SEC East in an off year, and maybe that did play a part in the team’s success.

The Gators lost to Georgia last year, 17-9, and could have won that game save for a freak loss of ball at the Georgia goal line in the waning seconds. If that ball had been caught, the Gators would have gone to Atlanta and faced Alabama. Maybe it was a blessing that didn’t happen. Nevertheless, Florida would have been undefeated and played the nation’s number one team. If they had won there, the Gators would have had their chance at a third national championship title in six years. It’s probably not a reasonable scenario, but it still could have happened.

As it turned out, the Gators went to the Sugar Bowl and got shellacked by, of all teams, Louisville, with a score of 34 to something. No on thought that game was a pivotal one, but it served as a forecast to the team Florida would have this year.

In the meantime, the Gators have jammed up re-cruiting classes, so no one is questioning what the future holds, no one except for some fair-weath-er Gator fans who are screaming for Muschamp’s scalp. This situation has already gotten to “back room” support from the AD and the President of the school. I just don’t think it is justified when you look at what has happened to the team this year, and I am not going to into that because the list of injuries goes on and on.

Maybe having to go to third-string quarterback, Skyler Mornhinweg, who has little to no playing time since coming to Florida, emphasizes the whole miserable way things have gone for the Gators. To his credit, Muschamp has not whined or given ex-cuses, preferring to place the blame on himself. Florida, unless they upset Florida State, will fail to become bowl eligible for the first time in 23 years. But lets not blame Muschamp and his staff for that rather get behind the Gators to continue to play hard in every game. All this talk comes from someone whose Alma Mater, Duke University, has had one winning season since 1994, and that was last year when they won six games.

Duke not only finds themselves bowl eligible, but having the possibility of ending up 10-2 and facing FSU in Atlanta. Duke, beating Miami last Saturday, shows how important it is to have a defense that has managed to “hang in there” this year. Now, against the likes of FSU, I’m not sure who will come out on top.

Which brings into the conversation the over-whelming performance by the Noles against all comers this year. This is their year, and the pos-sibility of a Bama/Noles championship face-off in Pasadena, with an FSU victory, is very likely. Years ago, saying anything positive about Talla-hassee was out of the question, but with two sons and their families being pro-Nole, I’ve had to keep a modicum of peace in the family.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the ACC is heads up with a bunch of SEC teams this year, and that, in itself, is something I would not have predicted as recent as three years ago. I guess that’s healthy for both conferences.

time, telling old Saint Nick about the new bicycle he wants for Christmas. I could tell he is ready for his next Iron Man Triathlon race in October of next year in Hawaii, a race he has already quali-fied for.

Brady’s typical train-ing schedule consists of, on average, 15 to 22 hours per week. Train-ing includes one to two strength training ses-sions, three to four cy-cling sessions, totaling 150 to 300 miles, four to five runs, totaling 40 to 70 miles, and three swim sessions, totaling 7,500 to 12,000 yards.

Now for me this would be a full time job just training, but not for Brady who still is a full time helicopter pilot in the Navy, a husband and father. You might think that a man, who is a full-time helicopter pilot, a husband and father, and can handle all this would be from another planet, but to my surprise, I found out that Brady grew up right here in Putnam County.

He graduated from Crescent City High School in 1991, and it was there he met the love of his life Yolanda. Yolanda taught elemen-tary special education for many years before becoming a guidance counselor at CCJSHS.

After High School, Brady enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. and asked Yolan-da to marry him. They now have three chil-

dren; a seven-year-old daughter named Mor-gan, and four-year-old twins, Evan and Eve-lyn.

Commander Brady has been doing tri-athlons for over three years now, and at 40-years-old, he is in better shape than any 40-year-old man I have ever met in my life.

Over the past three years he has competed in eight half-iron dis-tance (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run) and two iron dis-tance triathlons, as well as numerous short distance triathlons.

When asked about his training and what pushes him the most, Brady replied, “I have one of the best coach-es in the world, Mr. Shawn Burk of Velocity Multisport Coaching, Inc. he pushes me to my limits and makes me see my full po-tential as an athlete.” Brady stated that his inspiration during the triathlons is his wife and kids. “They give me the courage and will power to finish each race,” said Brady.

Brady trains right here in Putnam Coun-ty because he said the roads and terrain are some of the best in Florida, but it doesn’t come without danger. While training on High-way 309 on his $5,000 training bike, Brady was side swiped by a car. The mirror hit him as the car went past, sending him flipping through the air.

Now you would think that this person would have stopped, but the

answer would be “NO!” Florida has a law that gives bicyclist the same rights as cars, and by law you must yield three feet away from anyone on a bike.

Currently, Brady is a Commander (0-5) in the U.S Navy and has over 20 years of active service and six deploy-ments, and he’s not done yet. In fact, Brady stated that in a few years, after he retires, he would like to get in-volved with the young people in this area who want to become Iron men and to train them for the sport.

As I was driving home from the interview, it made me feel proud to know that we have a man living in our community like Brady. He is, without a doubt, the real Iron Man. So if you happen to be standing outside and you see a Navy helicop-ter fly over, raise your hand to your forehead and give it a salute, because you just might be saluting our Putnam County Iron Man who is over head protecting us from the evil villains of this world.

Commander Brady, it was an honor to do your interview and, in my book, the superhe-roes that I grew up ad-miring don’t even hold a candle to you, sir. You, Commander, are a true American hero. God Bless you and keep you safe as you fight for our country, and I will be looking forward to covering you in the Iron man half Triathlon, this March, in Ocala.
